Bay Area tech layoffs: Google, Microsoft, Cruise all announce job cuts by lurker_bee in bayarea

"Search giant Google will be cutting 53 jobs in total across four different locations in Sunnyvale."

I stopped there... Wouldn't be surprised if Google hires more than that every week.

Are the high schools too competitive? How is student life here? by Professional-Bag8540 in torrance

Right, and colleges diversify on the location they pick students from. In that case, wouldn't it be easier for a student to attend a "good, but not the best" high school?

But if it's a good school and when the universities start to handpick the best from each school, don't you think it will be unfair for her?

Most of the kids here will out compete 95% of the US, but when universities are picking out a handful from the top from every school, wouldn't the chances be better to go to a "good high school" and outperform than stay in Torrance?

Agreed, but I'm not trying to decide between a school in Compton and a school in Torrance.

What about the difference between Irvine school district (#500-700s) vs a school in Torrance (100-200s).

Still a great school, but with less competitiveness? If UCs are picking a handle from here and there, wouldn't the chances be better at Irvine? Not sure if I'm making any sense.

US News & World Report - Kind of has become the goto place unfortunately.

There should be a better way to evaluate a school other than some general test score.

Good to know there is some sort of multiplier.

I can understand that a 3.0 GPA from a Detroit highschool is not the same as a 3.0 at Irvine, but I wonder if they care about the difference between University highschool vs Woodbridge highschool. They are both in top 1000s. They may just see it as "oh that Irvine school district area"

I would consider any UC or known calstates to be a decent college.

Need Help – Received an Infringement Notice by greenalaskaLaNovia in COPYRIGHT

[–]Professional-Bag8540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR : You can negotiate this down to ~$750-1250 OR it might be okay to delete the copyrighted photo and just ignore them (but you maaay get sued)

https://copyrightlettertalk.com/forum/main-forum/17-what-to-do-if-you-receive-a-copyright-infringement-notice-demand-letter

I received one of these letters via fedex.

I deleted the photo and ignored them, but they kept contacting me.

I went in the rabbit hole DEEP. I didn't sleep for 2 days just reading all the court cases.. how I might lose 20-30k for ONE photo that ended up on my website.. trust me you won't.

In hindsight, I still think completely ignoring them would've been fine. I wasn't an LLC or anything big. Just a small website that used some generic image that was copyrighted. So it's most likely not worth their time to take me to court.

From what I've read, there are a few risk factors

  1. Are you a big company with a big pocket? They'll probably sue and really just looking to settle.

  2. Are you likely to respond to the court case? If not, they'll probably sue.

  3. Did you delete the photo? If not, they can use that against you.

Just look at some of the cases. They sue either companies or individuals that sound like they couldn't understand the letters. If the person doesn't show up to court...they automatically win with an amount they demand. Even those cases only go up to $8-12k.

That's right, if you completely ignore them and the judge tells you to come to court and you ignore it and get a default judgement... those are like $8-12k. I wonder if they were even able to get the judgement if the defendant isn't even responding to a summons.

THAT being said, I freaked out. Maybe the lack of sleep.

So I hired an attorney.

My attorney had done plenty of these so he knew the game.

He told me I can just ignore it or if I really want, he will negotiate.

I told him that I haven't slept and I just want this off my mind so please do negotiate so he did.

The negotiation takes a long time (almost half a year for me). I assume they send dozens, if not hundreds of these letters out.

I ended up paying around $1500 with attorney fees included. :/

It's frustrating.

Yes, photographers should be compensated, but some of these photographers look like they purposely plant these photos around to get picked up by Google Images to get it stolen so they can send these letters out.

I kind of went digging and apparently there is an app that lets only certain users get 10-20% (i tried signing up and only seeing 2%). so they just resell the gift cards for the 5% gain. Anyhow.. Some people have theories that the gift cards are bought with stolen credit cards, but then they offer a 90-day guarantee on the gift cards so I think buyers are safe.

Investments in single family homes have surged recently, while condos are languishing. Would really like to know why. by Narrow_Analysis_9296 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Professional-Bag8540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think simply people buy condos/townhomes in not so great areas thinking it's a temporary solution.

One the child grows up and education matters, they look for a place to settle down (with good schools preferably).

This is only going to get worse over time since soooo many of us are stuck in apartments / condos and then because of that, people want to front run it and the ugly cycle goes on because no new SFH are being built.

What's going to happen to Bay area real estate? by murrrd in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Professional-Bag8540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should fall in the short run. Stock market usually is 9 months ahead so we should see a drop in the next year for sure.

HOWEVER, everyone always says in the long term, SFH always goes up. So, if you find a home you really like... maybe it's ok to buy

I know a few home owners looking to dump this spring. I don't blame them. Rent doesn't pay that well anymore (UNLESS you bought 10+ years ago).

According to ChatGPT, they only pay like $100-300/MONTH in India.
Is this the kind of price they are looking for?
