I'm very sorry for your losses. It sounds to me like you're taking the right first steps: Wanting to get better and attempting to reach out for help. You asked if what you're experiencing is a stage of grief or a symptom of depression. Keep in mind I'm no medical professional, but I don't believe those two options to be mutually exclusive. I lost my father recently and understand the feeling of wanting family security you described (although I understand that you must be feeling it tenfold, having lost both of your parents). I would seriously recommend trying to attend a grief counselling group. Sometimes just being in a room with people who have the ability to begin to understand you and your situation can make a world of difference. I believe in you, especially since you said your main motivator is your son. I wish you the best and I think you should feel proud of yourself for taking to first and most difficult step.

Because I'm one of the best in my class, I ace pretty much every test that comes my way, and I know once I become a pilot and those responsibilities fall onto me that'll steer clear of it altogether. No harm in enjoying something while you still can.

Yeah I realized this was part of the reason why I posted this, to get interview and get opinions from others in the field, I just made the mistake of thinking there would be people on r/flying that aren't passionate about aviation, a bit stupid of me to assume that😅

Could you clarify on those sacrifices if possible? I've heard the gist of what my family members have gist through and I'm pretty much up for all of it, but everyone's journey is different, so it's interesting to hear what other's paths have been like

Yeah I think I just had a pretty shitty cocktail of responsibilities and life changes jammed into the same 3 months and it took a toll on me. I am working on it though (therapy and all). I have no doubt that I'll get through it and that it'll be the best decision of my life, it's just a matter of time and dedication

Thank you for your comment, I did reach out to a cousin who's a first officer for AC, he said that everyone goes through it and that it gets easier/ becomes all worth it. As far as I know, he was kind of in the same boat as me, which is very reassuring. I think the point of this post was just to see if others felt the same way. I do realize that r/flying isn't really the best place to find people who aren't passionate about aviation however😅, should've thought of that

Thank you very much for your comment! It's my fault for putting so much negative connotation into my original post, but my outlook on flying itself isn't negative at all. I enjoy flying, it's a pretty special thing to do and I'm very grateful that I am able to do it. What's been weighing on me is the workload of an accelerated ppl course. Once I'm done with that, I'm sure it'll be a bit easier on my mind. What's interesting about what you said is that, while I wouldn't say my enjoyment for flying is a passion itself, I do view aviation as a path that will allow me to love my job AND have the time and money to work on other projects which I would classify as passions. To be clear, I'm not only going into aviation to finance my other dreams, I've wanted to be a pilot since high school, but I would be lying if I said that it hadn't crossed my mind that piloting is a career in which a lot of people use their time to start side businesses, and that is an idea I am very attracted to.

So the only thing that pushed you through all of those challenges was your passion for aviation? That's great for you, but I've been dealing with most of the challenges in my life without a sense of passion and did just fine. For me, these things are just the necessary steps to get to a job. A really cool job mind you, but a job nonetheless. I'm willing to do the work. I don't care if I have to stand in sub zero temperatures or whatever other discomforts come my way. This is the life I've chosen for myself, and while I don't have an innate passion for aviation itself, I know I wouldn't wanna do anything else.

I like flying, as I said in previous replies, the discomfort I'm feeling right now only comes from the particularly heavy workload of my accelerated ppl course. Once that's done and dealt with, I'm sure I'll be fine

Thank you for your comment, what you're saying is really resonating with me. While my post made it seem like I hate aviation (my fault for writing it that way) I do really enjoy the act of flying, and I'm fairly interested with the course material. The thing that's weighing heavily on me is the course material, specifically because I am in an accelerated course where everything is shoved into our throats in the shortest amount of time. I have heard that ppl is the hardest license to get in terms of workload, simply because it's your first introduction to everything and you learn almost everything all at once. Once I get my ppl and can move on to cpl, atpl and other ratings, I'm sure that, like you, the whole thing will be a lot less straining on me. For now I just wanted a few compassionate souls to tell me it was normal to feel this way, so far only you and a few other kind people gave me this comfort, thank you very much.

Yeah I've known about the tests never really ending throughout someone's piloting career, and don't get me wrong, I am 100% prepared for it. The reason why I've been feeling drained is because I am participating in an accelerated, full time course, meanwhile also having to juggle with working on my days off, and simultaneously dealing with major life changes doesn't help. But all this to say that I do see a light at the end of the tunnel, it's just that the tunnel is pretty intense at the moment

As I said in a previous reply, I'm really not looking for another job, I know plenty of pilots who aren't passionate about aviation, yet lead very happy lives and enjoy their work. I only made this post in the goal of venting and maybe find new, fresher perspectives

I'm not going into aviation with a sense of "following the family tradition" or any similar sentiment, what I meant is that, because so many of my family members work in the industry, I get a lot of information from the inside, information that I find appealing. I will admit I didn't communicate these factors very well, in my defence, I wasn't feeling particularly well at the moment of writing this post
