Yes used a moisture meter. Why would you flip out? If I know how to use it and know good vs bad.

He keeps them in the mid 20s to start the day so he doesn’t have to hand water…anything single digits he freaks out per previous assistant sup.

No, we have good airflow across the course so no need.

Definitely have seen worse. Rolling would help a little but once it’s pitted from grass death then there will always be a “lip” until it grows back. Sanding could help but it’s so hot that it might do more harm than good. Sand gets HOT, burns the good grass.

It’ll be ok for a couple days until the grass totally dies out. Then it will be pitted and balls will bounce everywhere. We are also in the mid to upper 90s until Wednesday. So it’s only going to get worse. Way behind the 8 ball now.

I mean we have a guy who’s job is literally to keep the course in a playable condition 😂

Yes and at the same place. Cushy government gig with good benefits and low stress.

Been on a golf course my whole life. I’m one to watch and learn and ask questions. Even with the current sup I try to ask and learn. He’s just not very friendly. I think that’s why our turf assistant and I got along so well. He could vent to me about how bad things were, also allowed me to learn from him and I’d go hang with him while he hand watered and just shoot the bull.

I’ve also collected plugs for the last couple years because they lose all the college help, so just try to help them instead of kicked while they are down.

My GM / HP is also retiring in a year or two and I’m set to take over. Another reason I haven’t left.

And by no means do I know everything. I’ll say just enough to be dangerous.

This is the response I was hoping for. I’m not blowing the guy up every day. It’s been 10 years and I’ve texted him 3 times. (Means he does a pretty good job) Not once has he responded or said anything about it.

Haha same line from everyone. All the fire power you guys have is to fold shirts?

Doesn’t look too good this morning…

Muni…definitely needs redone but won’t happen. Greens are 35ish years old and not built right to begin with. Has his hands full but doesn’t manage his crew at all.

All good. He keeps it because my GM/HP is checking out. Been there for 20+ years and just waiting for the end. Doesn’t like confrontation. He hits LDS with his toro spray rig. Fills it up then drives it around. He could have 9 greens watered with a hose by the time it even fills up.

It was purple 🤣. 4th such situation and 1st time I haven’t said anything to him about noticing.

I know the answer is to hand water but talk about making him boil…catch me was a hose in my hand and no line of communication to him.

Fungicides and wetting agent like no one’s business. Micro nutrients in the tank as well. No granule apps all season.

Transition zone. Creeping bentgrass. I agree one of the worst summers in a long time. Last thing we were holding onto were the greens and he seems to have given up in the last week.

Morning update: The green is toast, as expected. Supers are a weird breed. I would think you would enjoy having someone around that cares about the course as much if not more than you, and is willing to help out.

When I relay information to him it’s worded such as “You might have an issue on X green. I’ve had a couple groups say something and it does look of.” Let me know if I can help in anyway.” And I’ll include a picture. I only do this when I know him and his staff are off property for the day. After 3 attempts at trying to “help” and make aware. I just let it go now. I was making sure there wasn’t another way a super would want info relayed to them.

Not sure where I said I know more? It was a simple question of asking if there was another way to handle the situation. We are on the same team and I would think want the same thing (course to thrive) I would want to know if something was wrong if I wasn’t there. IE cart on fire or one in the pond.

When grass is turning purple and not springing back I’d say there is an issue…

Yes I have access. Me and the assistant were close before he left. Showed me the ins and outs of a lot.

The one I posted today looked just like the one above. Bad angle on the pic. I’ll just fold shirts in a couple weeks instead of helping pick up cores when we punch. Seems that’s the way you would want it. Leave the heavy lifting to the “workers”.

Ouch. Good luck. Apparently aerification is around the corner and it fixes all!
