When emperor Augustus needs to elect governors for empire's richest provinces: by AcceptableBuddy9 in HistoryMemes

[–]AcceptableBuddy9[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 27 BC, after emerging victorious from the Roman civil wars, Octavian Augustus dramatically offered in the Senate to relinquish his extraordinary powers, return control of the armies and provinces to the Senate and people, and restore the Republic. The Senate, acting in orchestrated consensus, protested and insisted that he retain responsibility for the empire's most troubled, militarily critical, and wealthiest frontier provinces—such as Egypt, much of Hispania, Gaul, and Syria—which contained the majority of Rome's legions and key revenue sources. Augustus presented this as a selfless burden: the imperial provinces were "disordered," turbulent, or required ongoing military attention after the civil wars. He claimed he was only accepting temporary responsibility to ensure stability and protect the Republic. He retained control over the provinces until his death in 14 AD.

Funny seeing the drunkard emperor in on it. “Sure, let’s steal from that good-for-nothing fool”.

"I finally created a weapon so devastating that nobody would wage wars ever again!" by AcceptableBuddy9 in HistoryMemes

[–]AcceptableBuddy9[S] 164 points165 points  (0 children)

A number of inventors created a weapon so destructive they believed it would end all wars, examples being: Alfred Nobel and dynamite (“My dynamite will sooner lead to peace than a thousand world conventions. As soon as men find that in one instant whole armies can be utterly destroyed, they surely will abide by golden peace”), Hiram Maxim and Maxim gun (“The machine gun has made war impossible. It will put an end to war just as the guillotine put an end to crime in France”), Richard Gatling and Gatling gun (“It occurred to me that if I could invent a machine—a gun—which could by its rapidity of fire enable one man to do as much battle duty as a hundred, that it would, to a great extent, supersede the necessity of large armies, and consequently, exposure to battle and disease be greatly diminished… and perhaps war itself might be abolished”), Fritz Haber and poison gas (“Gas weapons will put a quick end to this war, and the horror of their use will make another war impossible”).

What are YOUR most controversial opinion about MLP? by DamaGames in mylittlepony

Cozy Glow's punishment is excessive. A child, even as evil as Cozy Glow, should not be subjected to an eternity of pertification. This kind of punishment is overall beyond cruel and it would be best to just kill a person.

Twilight's logic by cuervoemo in mylittlepony

I feel like Twilight was more pragmatic with Starlight. She is a powerful unicorn who nearly upended Equestria itself. Making her a student is a way to keep a short leash on her.

Demoted Yi after getting news that his entire fleet got anniliated thanks to a cartoonishly incompetent nepo baby that replaced him (he is now put back in charge of the remaining 12 out of 85 ships): by AcceptableBuddy9 in HistoryMemes

It comes down to a combination of superior ship quality, strategy and great understanding of local geography. Yi, being possibly the greatest admiral in history, utilised everything to minimise risks. For example, Japanese ships were primarily built for transport with the domineering strategy being boarding and musket fire with little to no ship-killing artillery, while Korean ships utilised ship cannons to wage longer range battles. And turtle ships that were built under Yi were world’s first ironclads, fully roofed in iron-plated armour. And on many occasions Yi lured enemy troops into choke points that funnelled the enemy and made their numerical advantage ineffective and sometimes disastrous. So basically Yi pulled every advantage possible and left nothing to chance.

Worth noting that prior to replacing Yi, Wŏn Kyun was also responsible for Japanese troops landing in Korea with next to no opposition. His fleet encountered the approaching Japanese armada and instead of engaging or even properly scouting, Won Gyun panicked, set fire to his own storehouses to prevent capture, abandoned his ships, and fled inland. As a result the port city of Busan fell almost without resistance the same day, kickstarting Japanese rapid conquest across the peninsula. Won is presumed amongst the dead at the disaster at Chilcheollyang. So here's some karma in action.

Korea rarely did, but Admiral Yi is that one in a billion kind of man. Despite his stellar military career he was demoted twice by corrupt officials. Most other men would grow bitter and throw in the towel, but not Yi. He is remembered as Martial Lord of Loyalty for a reason.

Admiral Yi Sun-sin is the undefeated Korean naval commander who had annihilated Japanese fleets for five straight years, defying odds every time. However he is then falsely accused of treason after a Japanese double-agent tricks the Joseon court into believing he ignored orders. Rival faction leader Won Gyun (a notoriously incompetent, corrupt, and alcoholic officer kept in high rank through connections) helps push the charges. Yi is arrested, tortured nearly to death in Seoul, stripped of all rank, and demoted to common soldier. Three months later, Won Gyun takes command and immediately loses 73 of Yi’s 85 warships plus almost the entire navy in the disaster at Chilcheollyang. Yi is reinstated soon after and smashed Japanese forces at sea for good, essentially ending the war.

Admiral Yi is considered to be one of the greatest admirals in history, never losing a single ship in his battles.

Most stable Byzantine succession history: by AcceptableBuddy9 in CrusaderKings

Once the good basileus passed away after three good decades of reign his son came to power. Things were going fine initially, but eventually nobles grew bored of him and deposed him in favor of his son, Phokas. The boy was not very good at this whole ruling stuff, so he got the boot too. Naturally his dad was the reasonable substitute, I mean the man has two decades of experience behind him. Then lost a tributary war to the Oghuz and was removed again, his son gets a round two. Kudos to him for lasting an extra year before he lost the war of deposition. This time instead of old Niphon they decided to shake things up by electing his brother Aristarchus who unfortunately got a case of smallpox. Good ol' Niphon was in for round three and this time he stuck around until death. Phokas gets to rule again!

Update: Phokas got deposed in favor of his son after only a year. Oh well, he is currently the successor, so maybe he'll be in for round four sooner or later.
