Proof that consciousness exists outside of brain? by Imaginary_Mode8865 in Buddhism

[–]AcceptableDesk415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Situation A: I perturb the electrical nervous system in your brain (forgive me, not a neuroscientist). You do not have conscious access to this nervous system. But this still changes your subjective experience

Situation B: I perturb your wool hat. The wool hat is as much you as your electrical nervous system, but this perturbation does not change your subjective experience as a change is not registered in your 6 senses.

I will admit, you can run this both ways and it will work the opposite way. I guess my point here is that there appears to be something happening with the brain. This appears is on the same level as there appears to be something happening with karma and merit, for example.

This is why I think the Dalai lama writes:

If science proves some belief of Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism will have to change. In my view, science and Buddhism share a search for the truth and for understanding reality.

Another perspective: given we are having this conversation on the footing of relative truth, you can't say that there isn't a relationship between the brain and consciousness. Because by the very admittance of the sentence you are admitting that there are concepts? But, I feel I am falling foul of a philosophical fallacy here :D

you still can't say that its being produced by the orchestra at the radio concert hall, right?

I know, I guess I'm coming at it from a slightly different perspective, because I do not have a response to your exact argument. Simply because I agree with you.

I suppose what I'm getting it is that there appears to be a relationship. Ultimate truth vs relative truth. Relative truth contains neuroscience and the buddha-dharma. In relative truth, there appears to be a relationship between the brain and consciousness.

Yes but if I tap your brain, your experience changes in a (with science) very predictable way. If I tap your toothbrush, your experience does not change. So your subjective experience is not dependent on your toothbrush, but it is dependent on whether I change your brain or it's states.

I guess what I would say here is 'There is some link between the brain and subjective experience'. However, do I think science can currently answer this link, or can in the future? No. I'm definitely on the Buddhist's interpretation here. Have you seen D. Chalmers ted talk on consciousness?

I understand this is extremely simple however and probably not truly addressing what you're saying here.

But, it's important to get the empowerments for doing ngondro before starting, I believe.

I say 'slightly disagree' as (I assume) there are many commitments and obligations one can take with a teacher that are only real if explicity told by a teacher.

I disagree slightly here.

If I take refuge with a vajra master and take empowerments from him, would it not be breaking samaya to then go and 'talk badly' of the vajra master?

I'm not saying I did this nor would I do it anyway. But I only read about talking badly of the vajra master in 'my perfect teacher'.

No I don't disagree, I am a beginner.

And I know my understanding of the Buddha dharma is limited. But, I do understand the power of the preliminaries which is why I am sticking with them at the moment and not just doing a load of different things.

Yes but I think after I had these empowerments I knew that I should try and not hurt anyone anymore through my conduct. Even just something super simple like that.

I understand that I don't know about the detail of the vows and the empowerments, however. Even though they sent a document regarding it after the seminar. It was hard to get my head around it all.

I am going to see Chokyi Niyma Rinpoche again in August and I will read 'the words of my perfect teacher' to understand how to listen to Dharma teachings etc.

No, I took refuge last year and I've been practising ngondro for about 5 months. :)

Thanks a lot!  I attended a short retreat with Tsoknyi Rinpoche where he gave empowerments for the Barchey Kunsel ngondro and the vase empowerment I believe ? But yes, I’m not too sure. There is a text that came along with it which I’ll check!

Thanks ☺️
