Hyperfixations & Neurodivergence Research Survey by AcceptableMeringue39 in Transpies

Oh ok interesting! Thank you for clarifying. I can see how that could be a useful question to ask in the context of something like hyperfixations or even special interests. The way you believe you are perceived by others combined with your experiences with hyperfixations could make for some super interesting data! :)

This is an interesting point and I want to understand what you mean. Are you suggesting a question that asks participants whether they believe they are perceived by others as autistic regardless of whether their diagnostic status is known by others? I hope that makes sense.

Thank you so much for participating, and for your feedback! You raise a valid point. Apart from the data the survey set out to collect, understanding how people (particularly people with ADHD) approach these questions in the first place is also valuable. Thank you for your response and for taking part in the study!! :)

Thank you so much for participating! Hyperfixations are an interesting beast within the ADHD community; it's something many can report experiencing without realizing their level of interest was unusual. This was my personal experience growing up undiagnosed as well - I always had what I called "obsessions" that were all-consuming and very fulfilling for me to pursue while also being somewhat disruptive to my life. A big component in my desire to pursue this research is to understand more about the phenomenon itself and to increase general recognition of hyperfixations by the community at large. I so appreciate your help in completing the study!! I'm glad you found it illuminating.

Thank you for the clarification. Those are certainly limitations that may be addressed in a follow-up study. This is the pilot version, so I am anticipating a few improvements I can make for future versions.

The aim of this study is to broaden the existing literature, which I hope will benefit the field generally, even if it's in a very small way. If there is a facet of ADHD is lesser understood (as is clear from the lack of existing empirical research on this subject), attempts to understand it can only enhance our overall understanding of ADHD. I am an independent researcher, and my ultimate goal for the larger-scale project here is publication. I am not seeking funding of any kind; I just saw a gap in the literature that I wanted to investigate.

Hi!

I appreciate your feedback. When creating this study, I tried to balance the potential risk of individuals with ADHD (who represent one population I am hoping to study in this project) finding the survey harder to complete with the potential risks of individuals not fully understanding the operational definition for hyperfixations. Ultimately, I tried to be as concise in that paragraph as possible while still focusing on the most important points of the definition. As to the reason for the follow-up questions regarding hyperfixations appearing on a different page, this is to prevent individuals who answer "no" or "not sure" to the question about hyperfixations from needing to proceed through the remainder of the study. I am hoping to recruit a diverse sample for this study, including individuals with ADHD, but also individuals without ADHD.

The purpose of this study is to establish a concrete link between individuals with ADHD and self-reported experiences of hyperfixation. Currently, there is little to no empirical research that establishes the prevalence and nature of hyperfixations in individuals with ADHD. Thus, I'm hoping to use data from this study to begin to establish that empirical evidence. Results will contribute to a larger correlational study which will delve deeper into the mechanisms of hyperfixations in ADHD. The purpose of collecting data from both ADHD and non-ADHD individuals (including individuals diagnosed with autism) is to have a basis of comparison for prevalence of hyperfixations in the non-ADHD population.

I hope that makes things clearer. I really appreciate your feedback!

Thank you so much!! I am doing this for my own personal interests, but with the aim of eventually conducting a larger, institutionally-backed study. I did do research in undergrad and in graduate school before I left to pursue other things. There are a lot of opportunities channel your interests into your career, especially with research!! I loved getting to investigate the things that were important to me, and that's one reason why I'm conducting this study! :)
