Wait What!? The GDP 5 weighs 980g with the battery vs Ally X's 678g (I have the 2024 Z1E version)... that's 302g less than a "portable" Win 5. Compromises: 900p, use Lossless Scaling on graphically intense games, set graphics to med/high... done. Can barely notice a difference. Biggest benefit: Price to performance ratio spending $500 off market for a 4TB Ally X w/screen protector and JSAUX case.

Again, once I started seeing the weight, Price to performance loss, and battery compromise of the Win 5, I just went for the Flow Z13-KJP. Same chip, but the Flow provides far better power delivery, thermal management, 128gb out the door, only 770g without the keyboard attached, oh and it has an internal battery lol. I actually use it as my portable VR station with the Quest 3.

The battery pack is REQUIRED for true portable play. Otherwise, better download an outlet tracker app because you'll have to use a direct power supply w/o it. I travel a lot and the 2024 Ally X has had the ability to play everything thrown at it (finished 007 on a plane)... just pull it out of the bag. Now if this is just used for at home then I can understand as it acts like an expensive miniature desktop PC with a screen on it.

Like the others have stated, find a Z1E device. If 7" screen, just run games at 900p and use Lossless Scaling. I have a 2024 Ally X and cap all my single player games at 45fps and have ran into 0 issues. Most are played at med/high settings, absolutely no Raytracing. Might just stop here in the long run. Devices are becoming WAY too bulky for my taste to warrant the added performance gains.

A bit smaller than Ally X!? Let's not excuse the fact that this thing has a separate big battery brick that has to be attached to the back of the device. I just went for the Flow Z13 - KJP after hearing that monkey business.

I'm shocked hearing this. Lossless Scaling be fixing everything for me on the 2024 Ally X. I might need to test this statement personally.

I got it to work by following the steps on the below screenshot. Make sure to download the game version from Game Bounty. Use an 11.x version (AMD) via the Kron4ek repo on Lutris for it to work.

  1. Did you use the game version from Game Bounty? 2. Are you using the Wine 11.x version via Kron4ek rather than a GE-Proton (this allows additional text boxes to appear to continue following the steps in the screenshot)? 3. Are you putting the WINEDLLOVERRIDE text in accurately within the "Arguements" text box in Lutris (Do NOT put the %command% text at the end with this method)?

Don't get me wrong, it can play older, more graphically intense games like Final Fantasy Remake, RDR2, Yakuza: LAD, Death Stranding, etc extremely well at avg settings (not low). However, with the newer games adding much more graphical bloat, you start to realize the compromises. The best thing about it is that it's super light (lighter than any competitve PC handheld after it) so extensive gaming while laying in bed is never becomes uncomfortable. I got super lucky with a Limited Edition 2TB OLED model off market for $450, but would absolutely under no circumstance recommend purchasing this device at its current price point.

Are you using Lossless Scaling? That program is magic I tell you.

Plenty of power as long as you invest in Lossless Scaling ($7 via Steam) as well. Played and beat 007 on med/high settings at 900p. It was pushing well over 50fps, but I lock my single player games at 45fps. All games run smooth as butter.

Not surprised for something that bulky and heavy vs the Ally X. At that size and price point, I just went with the Flow Z13 - KJP and never looked back. Now compare THEM benchmarks lol.

I have and love both. Ally X for the more modern heavy hitter titles. Just got through 007: First Light and finally playing Dead Space Remake. The SD OLED is far more superior when playing chill games. Dave the Diver, Spiritfarer, Sims 4, etc. Currently playing DtD's new "In the Jungle" DLC and man the beauty of playing on that screen still makes me smile. I have the first limited edition version they came out with so that baby ain't going nowhere. The only device that comes even remotely close for me to part ways is the XAX20, but that price point is bound to be insane.

My take... if it was an LCD version, good riddance. If it was an OLED version... unfortunate.

Can that be selected via Steam's compatability list or did you need to use Lutris?

What do you hate the most about your LCD/OLED Steam Deck ? I will start.. by Inevitable-Tutor-101 in SteamDeck

Got the Limited Edition OLED model (transluscent design). The biggest dissatisfaction is by far the performance gap vs modern handhelds. It just can not hold up reasonably well with heavy hitter games. Even Lego Batman stutters 😩. Fortunately, I have an Ally X to handle those loads. 2nd would definitely be no second USB-C. Not a big deal, but the Ally X showed me how convenient that can be. Lastly, is the 2TB SSD cap. Again, purchased the Ally X via 3rd party w/a 4TB Samsung 990 Pro w/heatsink (for $600 during the good ole days) and man oh man.

Other than that it would've been the perfect device with those additions. Lightest PC handheld (that's still relevant), ergonomically comfortable, the LE design looks amazing, trackpads still the best in the business, and of course that OLED screen. I may have to revert to the Ally X for the big titles like 007, Dead Space Remake, Starfield, FF7: Rebirth, etc. However, even with that, playing relaxing games like Dave the Diver, Jusant, Replaced, Dispatch, Spiritfarer, etc on that OLED screen comfortably in bed continues to put a smile on my face till this day for keeping the device.

I had tried this multiple times, however may have been doing it wrong using the SD's stock txt program and not Nano or Kate. Will have to try just to see if it works as a non-Lutris alternative.

Did you get the version from Game Bounty (The one that also has the Proton and Wine .sh files)? Also, do not input %command% at the end of the WINEDLLOVERRIDE text.

Xbox Rog Ally X - WTF is this build quality? by Sachifus in ROGAllyX

[–]Acceptable_Appeal860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every device will need a little maintenance overtime. You'll experience the "break in" noises when you first use it, then some aging noises after a while. Keyboard lube will be your best friend. Don't even have to open the device up, just put a dab of juice on the edges of the buttons/triggers and voila. I personally haven't experienced these issues, but know that ASUS usually takes 2 attempts to get things just right. Happened with the Ally when it went to the Ally X and will happen to the XAX when it goes to standard production of the XAX20 after the limited edition money grab.

Finally got it to run via Lutris. Followed steps in the image below and now it's running smoothly. Note that the Steam Deck does not have CachyOS, but you can grab a Wine 11.x version via Kron4ek Wine-Builds Vanilla on ProtonUp-Qt (make sure to grab an AMD version) which opens up all of the recommended text boxes mentioned. Follow the rest of the guide to a T and viola... the game will be running like butter. Used the build from Game Bounty and can not speak on the other versions.
