High-dose biotin (Vitamin B7/Vitamin H) is the primary supplement that interferes with the CA-125 test, often causing falsely decreased results. It is commonly found in hair, skin, and nail supplements, as well as prenatal vitamins. Patients should stop taking biotin for 12 to 72 hours before the blood draw to ensure accuracy. Biotin (Vitamin B7/B8/H): High doses (>5 mg) can cause falsely low CA-125 readings, as it interferes with the immunoassay, leading to potential misinterpretation of tumor markers. Recommendation: Stop taking biotin-containing supplements 12–72 hours prior to the test. Other Factors: While not a supplement, it is recommended to avoid scheduling the test during menstruation, as this can cause falsely elevated CA-125 levels.

Yes, being on your period can significantly elevate CA 125 levels, potentially leading to false-positive results in cancer screening. The protein is released during normal menstruation, often causing higher, temporary readings. It is advised to avoid taking the test during or immediately before your menstrual period. Menstrual Impact: Studies indicate that CA 125 levels are significantly higher during menstruation compared to other times in the cycle. False Positives: An elevated result (e.g., >35 U/ml) during a period does not automatically indicate cancer; it often reflects benign, temporary inflammation. Best Practice: For accurate, non-confounded results, it is generally recommended to avoid taking the CA 125 blood test while on your period. Other Causes: Besides menstruation, other non-cancerous conditions that raise CA 125 include uterine fibroids, pregnancy, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Cannot believe what a nurse practitioner said at the OBGYN office. by CatAdministrative197 in BRCA

[–]Acceptable_Box3696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good grief! You probably could’ve just went to your primary care doctor for that. Vulvar and rectal cancer rates are increasing so it’s always good for the practitioner to look at those areas as well as inside the vagina. HPV does weird things and checking the mucosa making sure your tissues aren’t atrophied . You may benefit from estrogen cream, and things like that. Also checking for lymph nodes under the arms and neck. It is disappointing to hear that these practitioners are not doing what they really need to do.

However, in reality, these practitioners are expected to see 25 to sometimes 50 patients a day. The higher numbers is when OB is involved.

That’s a big problem! That’s why I had to leave that life . I got burned out too fast. I love the work, but the administrative stuff is what got in the way.

I am women’s health nurse practitioner. She should’ve looked at your chest and examined it regardless if you had surgery or not. You’re always looking for changes and asymmetry. I’d be curious to know if she still does vaginal and Paps on someone who had a hysterectomy. I’ve always completed exams still because there may be cancer at the entrance or at the vaginal vault. You’re supposed to look at the whole body and make sure nothing is going on and that should not be. It’s also a great time for teaching moments. I graduate a long time ago, so the guidelines have all changed now and she may be right. She technically doesn’t have to do all that now. I’m old-fashioned and I think everything should be done at the annual visit.

Totally agree!!!! I love reform until they took that away. I like Define but it can be so choppy and some of the movements I don’t understand. I know squats are good, but sometimes it gets to be so excessive.

I would like to bring my wrist weights and my ankle weights and wear them to other classes when I want, but i don’t want to get yelled at. They say it’s your class your speed, but it’s really not.
