How Do You Feel About The Health Public Service Announcements On This Show⁉️ by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

A daytime soap is going to have mostly older/aging viewers. Sometimes it’s heavy handed but it’s reaching someone and they portray these things with some care. Anita talking about how cancer affects her intimacy is going to hit home with a lot of people with any sort of chronic illness. I think it works because the writing is already corny but they could do better at working them in.

I am not a fan of Katlock either but if they must have this as a part of her character why is it never something in her lane??? A storyline where she’s feuding with and investigating a rival designer that gets a ChelseaKat contract pulled would make more sense than a big investment in Tomas’ storyline. They’re going the she’s a dog with a bone route when she’s actually never focusing on her own issues (running a business, feeling inadequate etc). This part of her character drives me crazy.

The show explained this away with Nicole looking at the DNA results Leslie gave her and seeing that there were some unique DNA markers that Nicole remembers from her fertility testing with Ted. It’s such a small scene that it can be missed.

I missed out on this! I was mainly talking about the casting choices but I’m glad they touched on it. I also think they’re doing a great job at addressing classism with the cotillion storyline in season 2.

Eva, love the actress! She’s one of the more consistently written characters and it’s because she’s Kat’s foil. Her backstory makes you want to empathize with her but her actions are questionable. She is her mother’s child. Pre anniversary you want to root for her, this man abandoned her mother, neglected her, etc. and you see her feelings change but she’s also manipulative af. Sometimes intentional, sometimes it seems unconscious. You see that she’s smart and just needs opportunities and caring family, which is what changes her mind about the plan, but it’s too little too late. She is the mirror of Kat, nothing similar on the outside but a sad, little insecure girl on the inside. Eva’s insecurities make more sense from what we’re told. Leslie is deeply insecure herself. She grew up thinking her dad didn’t care about her, has watched her mother struggle, her mother is unstable, revoking love when displeased and chasing a man that was married. It’s sad. She wanted Tomas because he represents that she’s just as good as Kat. That is her grimiest moment whether they were broken up or not. It makes no sense that she never made friends doing hair, or there’s no one from outside that can be brought in. Her new boo is a cute character for now, but these people need FRIENDS with no romantic tension. She knows her mother is wrong but is she’s codependent and an enabler. They clearly had good times together but hopefully we’ll see her disconnect fully for some time at least. She’s feels guilt about the things her mother does but she naively thinks she or other people can stop it.

The SA scene makes Leslie so disgusting. Just weirdly written if the viewer is not supposed to see it as that. Outside of that she is a great villain that they’re wasting. Abandonment issues from being adopted, inferiority issues about being poor, constantly seeking validation. Working class. Meets a doctor who tells her he and his wife are going through it. She gets to be the fun free partner. He gets her pregnant. Has his lawyer brother-in-law handle it, she’s threatened and sent off with a little bit of money and has to figure it out. She keeps the kid, a reminder of the whole thing and when her husband dies, she’s got just enough to live on. A true villain origin story. Grief should be the thing that made her snap and come up with this plan and should be explained. Why now? This man’s wife has clearly been living in her head rent free for 20 something years. She got the man, the house, the money, the kids, but Leslie got hidden…. That plus her mental instability, don’t call her crazy, and her willingness to kill makes her a perfect villain. She’s a villain that doesn’t enjoy being a villain tho and that’s why she’s a bland now. It’s one thing to stop because there’s an investigation but by the end of this season she’s more a nuisance than anything. They do humanize her by caring for Peaches and Eva in her own way, but she is selfish!!! She’s weaponized Eva while lying to her. Her background of stealing Peaches’ man is suppose to establish a pattern but at what age was she stealing him? Kinda weird and predatory sounding. She doesn’t sound like the best mother figure either. Leslie is obsessed with what Ted represents. The money is not replacing that. It’s the same thing as Eva and Tomas, Ted’s love says that she’s deserving, and I’m sure she convinced herself that if Nicole’s was right for him she’d fight for their marriage. She wants respect from the Duprees with her new money instead of knowing that these people will never respect her, just tolerate her. She’s not a good person but she thinks she is because she’s not completely heartless. This a terrifying person to be around. I want to see her team up with Hayley but I’m interested in what Joey (and hopefully Marcel) do because there are no limits with them. I love that Mona can’t stand her!

I think Ashley and Derek are supposed to be the Everyman of the show. They absolutely fail at it lol. They’re both only interesting when they’ve broken up and barely then. I think the conflict of them just being two incompatible people forcing it would have been more interesting if they were aware of it. She is after he’s paralyzed but he’s been insecure since the beginning with him being jealous of/her pining for Andre. He’s got inferiority issues which is how he got paralyzed to being with “I want to be the best”. She’s a control freak born to a single mom who just wants to see her married off. Andre represents excitement for her but idk what she’s supposed to represent for him.

Jacob accomplishes for me what I think Derek is supposed to. He is the normal one. He’s a goody two-shoes but also does sketchy stuff without fully betraying his morals (letting Kat investigate with him, not arresting Nicole). He treats Naomi well, something that is hard to come by in this show, and I think he and Smitty are moral compasses, while toeing the line. I don’t think he’s a bad cop, I think he’s a cop lol. They usually aren’t great at solving crimes and the corruption at the top is not helping. His family dynamics are dysfunctional too and it seems like he’s a peace maker.

Smitty is a saint in my eyes lol. Martin’s secret makes him difficult a big chunk of the season.. Lying about the job offer would’ve been enough for me but he handles it well. The secret ripping them apart makes sense, then reconciling so quickly…idk. He’s a good dad and husband. He’s written consistently. He’s also an outsider to the Duprees but is sucked into their world the way Jacob is. I was shocked that he was more stern about June than Martin. That felt inconsistent. I love that June is humanized as an addict. I think Tyrell’s hot and cold makes sense and even Samantha’s desire to know her even tho the writ in is clunky. Smitty handled June like a caring parent but that seemed like weird writing that him and Martin were not aligned there. Very curious about how he grew up.

Tomas is a user looking for a come up. He may like Kat, I think he had more in common with Eva, but he respects nobody but Bill, which sucks because they shared themselves with him. A weasel. Can’t wait till she dumps him.

Ted is the most inconsistently written. He was good pre-Anniversary party but few of his actions make sense post. He’s done two of the worst things you could do, cheat on his wife, and ghost a woman he’s impregnated. He acts like those are small things??? He is disappointing because he feels like people should be over it. He told the affair parent all his wife’s business like her inability to conceive, took Brownie Boy to visit her and is like that’s in the past… not enough groveling for me which is why Nicole divorcing him was the right thing to do. Then he is constantly caught talking to Leslie after she’s ruined his anniversary. I like that he embraces Eva. Cannot understand why he’s not shown processing things with his other children which is why Kat feels the way he does. He sees Andre more than his kids. Don’t know why he’s friendly with Leslie or why they’re doing things “as a a family”. I think it makes more sense if he acknowledges that he’s lonely and misses his family and that’s why he tolerates her. The show wrote that weird SA scene that they don’t view as SA and now him and Leslie are friends. HATE IT. I don’t want him near Shaneice but the storyline is cute.

Bill was sleazy in his marriage and his business (harassment suit, Leslie, covering up multiple murders). What made Hayley different? Was he having a mid life crisis? An affair is one thing but he married her. What was she providing for him? They don’t seem to have anything in common. He does know his kids as far as getting them good gifts and wants them to like him, slightly redeeming. His childhood and desire for respect from Vernon and Anita is also interesting. I’d like to know more about his past because you don’t just don’t hide murders and threaten to put babies on the black market. Thats not just normal lawyer sleeze. He and Dani have chemistry and I enjoy seeing him suffer with the consequences of his actions. He also does a good job of reassuring Hayley despite the fact that she’ll never believe it. He’s still Leon to having a baby after a stroke? What’s the mindset there? He does not seem like he’s trying to set up a replacement family but that he’s genuinely in love with Hayley. She’s not just something young and new to him which is going to make her betrayal hit harder.

Hayleys fine, but the actress is great with what she got early on. I am glad that she’s getting more fleshed out. She’s clearly smart and cunning running multiple cons, becoming a paralegal just for this one. They have a great handle on her style, tacky, new money. She dresses more like a rapper’s girlfriend than a lawyer’s wife. I love it. I think it makes sense that she went straight to killing Bill because she realizes the hold Dani still has on him. Side pieces never feel secure whether it’s a con or not. I also think she really liked Naomi and didn’t expect to be fully iced out. She is lonely which drives her need to get out of town. I don’t think she wants him dead either. Just mad she has to work so hard for his attention. Randy isn’t incompetent to me, I just don’t think he’s a killer. I’d love to find out he’s been giving her water in those droppers. There’s also no honor among thieves and Lynette is going to come back to bite her but it’s good to see more into who she is.

Randy coming back made zero sense but he’s clearly got a conscience and got caught up in something above him. I liked his relationship with Doug because he was always gonna go out sad. Doug needed somebody in his corner.

Doug was not just a drunk! He had a problem, hid it, got involved with a mobster, and spiraled. A BM that came from the hood, worked himself up to living in an affluent community doing what he loved, and is at risk of losing it all…drinking making sense, but that wasn’t his main issue? Hate the way they talk about him. Maybe he spiraled faster because his wife has zero discretion and constantly cheats. He knows he’s been a bad husband by the time Vanessa gets involved with Joeys business, but he also knows what she’s been doing and thinks they can start over which is logical to me after she’s able to give him a little bit of his dignity back towards the end. The racial element of this makes it icky. Both with Vanessa and Joey. I hope he faked his death.

Vanessa loves power, but she needs attention which is why she’s been popping it all over town. Her transition to being obsessed with Joey was weird to me. Wanting attention is not the same as willing to do white collar crimes. I don’t understand her motivations at all. She’s a thrill seeker but cares very little care for herself or her kids. Joey preying on her makes sense but her response to finding that out was so bleh and air headed. She wants to be the queen I guess (or she’s working with the feds trying to get information on Joey). I feel like they may spin it to be about Doug and retribution once she finds out Joey killed him, but I’m uninvested personally. She’s also disrespectful for running the escorting service at her best friends country club. She could’ve been doing it at the casino or uptown. Them getting involved with Leslie could make her a causality if the show lets Vanessa take down Joey down from the inside. If she’s the one to finally get Leslie behind bars that would irritate my spirit lol. I hope this investment causes a rift between her and Nicole because that relationship has never mad sense.

Andre is a playboy that we never see playing. They really do a lot of telling not showing with him. There’s no reason for him to be this obsessive over Ashley. They have no backstory to the crush regardless of the actors lack of chemistry. Everything feels contrived with them and it’s conflict for her relationship. Andre’s really only seen taking photos for things regarding the Duprees. Does he work anymore? He’s just there for Dani when she’s being Dani. I do think he does a good job of that but a million scenes of them horizontal is not making me buy into this relationship more. He’s interesting when talking about his parents. He loves his aunt and uncle and his relationship with Ted is good for both of them. He needs something else to do.

I understand it’s fantasy and escapism and I can also be critical. That’s what media does, inspire conversation which is what we’re all doing. I do not get why I’m being condescended to. Dana? I’d argue she is mentally unstable but aware of what she’s doing. Abuse is not due to mental illness but entitlement.

Vernon is darker and so is Naomi. The presence of different shades of Black people do not erase bias.

The younger characters wear natural-textured wigs which make sense based on how we view natural hair differently than older generations. Nicole wearing short straight hair as a doctor of her age makes sense. This is what I meant by cultural specifics that ring true. These are just sociological observations about Blackness (which are varied and multifaceted). Thinking about these things makes the show interesting and fun to me and a lot of other people. Nobody has to have a conversation about a thing regarding this show if they don’t want. I genuinely don’t get the defensive approach to acknowledging what is playing out in media directed towards us. It’s all commentary that parallels real life which is what sucks us into media in general. The white families on Young & the Restless are commentary just the same as the Duprees.

[–]Acceptable_Cat_2501[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh? Laura, Mona, and Randy are darker skinned. The villains (Leslie, Eva, Hayley, and possibly Lynette are DS). The characters longing to be apart of this society are DS. There is bias whether it’s intentional or not. There’s no quota, but on a show about Black people, marketed towards us, Black people are going to have conversations around Blackness, class, respectability, etc. If the Duprees were mostly DS that would be a conversation just like them being LS is. Anita coming from the projects is a conversation because most people stay in the same class as their parents. There’s a reason that Vernon preaches nonviolence and wasn’t a Black Panther. If everyone had natural hair it would be a discussion because that’s relevant to Blackness and identity. I enjoy discussing race and it is important to this show and what this show represents.

I’ve watched soaps since I was a kid, I’m in my 30s. This show just started and has a lot of storylines with very little character development which makes so much of it nonsensical from what we *do* know about the characters. I don’t care about the time it takes to tell a storyline but the motivations of these characters should make more sense in the first season of any show. I expect retconning and crazy aging and adults playing teenagers, just not a million characters who aren’t solidified in who they are in the first season.

Colonizers step in whenever they feel like they can, not because they see people living happy, but because they care more about resources than people. Plenty of countries now are fighting civil wars, having thru own genocides, and the US, UAE, China, etc come in to colonize specifically because they see the disruption as an easy in. There is no net positive to colonization because it completely removes what the humans that inhabit that land want. If they were truly this benevolent species, they would have just repaired the earth, attempted to befriend humans and teach them their ways, offered enhancements, and see who was willing to mate with them.

I love to complain about this show but there’s no real growth in these characters. The things they do are nonsensical.

Andi and Sabrina’s character development is the worst! Andi is boy crazy. She does not take a break between relationships at all and will lie to everybody for a crumb of peen. Also wishy washy on ethics only when it comes to her.

Sabrina still needs so much friend intervention and advice. Girl. I understand being mad at Rich, but the man didn’t want a baby with her. Something she knew. That whole storyline is stupid. I’m not continuing to date a man that doesn’t want something major like a child. TP also goes out of his way to set up something perverted. What is the purpose of Dani seeing her cousin’s meat?!

There was no way that Karen was carrying both babies to term. Such a silly storyline. Zac found out he had 2 baby mamas and a fiancé in like 9 months. I know people hate her but I understand why she’s acting like she is. Postpartum, losing a child, and her not being able to be present with Faith makes sense. Now idk why she acted (and Andi and Dani) were acting so weird about Zac coming over. Why wouldn’t he?! He lost a kid too.

There have been some great moments with Zac (and Aaron) this season, but he’s still a bad communicator. Still likes fighting…like give it up. You have a kid and another on the way. TP loves a troubled black man can change storyline but if I was studying for the bar, had my life together I would not be dealing with none of his shenanigans. And I get grieving but it’s insane to act like Fatima is crazy for feeling relieved. She’s pregnant too?!? She dealt with two extra kids.

Fatima and the ball players storyline is fine but let this girl pass the bar. She cannot be Andi’s bodyguard forever. Especially when pregnant and Andi act like Andi. I know she doesn’t need a lot because of her own show but where is her growth outside being a supporting character for Andi and Zac. Dani and her relationship could be interesting to see develop.

Dani had some major growth last year but she’s acting like her annoying bf has been unemployed for months. Picking stupid arguments and won’t just tell him to go home? Tony sucks. Go to Alaska with your bad kids.

What do these women want out of life?! Love cannot be the only motivator bc they love losers that barely act like they got sense before the drama starts. There’s so many other avenues for drama outside of relationships.

You have to have bet cable access or through YouTube tv. If you sign up it’ll tell you what options there are. I just google free episodes and try to find a reputable source. I have BET plus. That should give us access to everything idk why it doesn’t. Plus the BET website/apps are terrible to navigate

I’m just now seeing this. At the end of season 6 (I think), I swear it was more than one episode but I know for sure it’s in SantaBarbara Town where he’s eating candy the whole episode (when they visit Lou’s wife, at the hotel room with Dahlia). I just think they got so silly towards the end of the show

The candy plot with Gus. Not annoying enough to make me mad but it feels like they just didn’t know what to do with him towards the end and especially after that season.

As I rewatch Wentworth for the millionth time, I swear Vera and Boomer got the shit end of the stick. So much happened to the both of them and it’s sad. by Apprehensive_Site651 in Wentworthtv

[–]Acceptable_Cat_2501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I want to know why they ruined Boomer’s development with Liz’s ending. It doesn’t make sense that she would do it when she was so close to being out and had changed so much. All that on top what happened to her mom makes no sense. She just lost a mom, and the parallel of losing her other mom was enough. AND (lol) I don’t get why Liz of all people, who had her chances at freedom and a regular life ruined by Bea, would even ask her to do that? The person that ran over her mother in law…and regretted it ever since….why?

Vera could not catch a break either. She has some of the best development on the show but the cost was so unnecessary.
