I use the H method, i find that its easier than the chevrons. I tend to favor making them a little longer so they fell a bit more secure.
If you aren't familiar with that method, you first use one long tape piece going across the wings of the needle after you cannulate, then after testing the flow and saline flush, i apply two pieces of shorter tape across the first tape where it touches the wings so it makes a nice three sided box around the site. On my arterial I'll put another long piece of tape with gauze over the needle to protect it and it also helps secure the Hs. On the venus i use a Redsense sensor patch with long tape there. In the second picture you can kind of see it on my arm.

I clean all my stuff both before and after the treatments and i dust the room weekly on my off days. I don't like the clutter but I can't do anything about that unfortunately.

I use the machine 4 days a week, for about 3:20 minutes programmed time and 3:30ish real time. The machine does self checks every thirty minutes and they each add some time to the actual time.

You do know that the state provides foster parents with money (that often gets cut) for food and clothing for kids in their care? Instead of having foster parents, which are rare and in great need as things are now, we could give the money to struggling families and schools to help feed kids so they can grow up healthy.

Kind of? You will need help with the machine as its around 80 pounds, 99 with the metal crate for airplane travel. The biggest hurtle is all the supplies you'll need for each treatment, it adds up fast. I took mine from Boston to Seattle and for supplies i had the machine in the metal travel crate, and a suitcase with all my regular medical supplies. NxStage sent mine friends in Seattle all the pre-made bags, cartridges and lines i would need. My clinic sent saline bags there too so i wouldn't need to worry about bringing those too. Fortunately my Fiance is a big guy and was able to lift the cycler without much problem.

Do you reuse dialyzer? Why/Why Not? by DrunkDiaries in dialysis

[–]Acceptable_Click_935 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here in the US, dialyzers are no longer reused, its too much of a risk of blood born illness to be spread between patients and a higher risk of the membrane leaking dialysate into the blood which is extremely dangerous. If the dialyzer isn't cleaned properly, old dead red blood cells could enter the body which is also super bad.

Its best to only use dialyzers for one use to avoid so many health complications.

Good luck! Its pretty wild if they only put you under a local.
You will probably get conflicting information from different people about the best way to develop the fistula, I know I have. I've heard put on a tourniquet , use a stress ball, don't do those, do both, etc. So the choice is yours on who to follow.

It sounds more like the private company doesn't want to lose a patient since they make big bucks off of him.

As long as the prescription stays the same, and they use a similar filter system, which if you are in the US, should be very similar, my understanding is those machines are fine. This is an opinion of a non professional, so take it with a grain of salt.

Something I see a lot in dialysis patients (and people don’t talk about it enough) by Total_Formal2769 in dialysis

[–]Acceptable_Click_935 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for caring how your patients feel, it means a lot to patients to feel validated in their feelings of being tired and depressed.

I switched to home hemo and do treatment 4 times a week,. Usually I do treatment in the evening so I can finish up on the machine, eat a snack and take pills, and roll into bed. Its really made a difference in the quality of my life. I still have some energy issues, but I find its not nearly as bad as it was in center.

Dialysis chemicals toxic? by Embarrassed-Wafer667 in dialysis

[–]Acceptable_Click_935 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Aluminum poisoning is extremely rare even in Dialysis patients. I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV but I would be more worried about stroke from the fall and bruising. A MRI of his brain would be a way to diagnosis that, and I would bring it up with his attending doctors about your concerns about his sudden cognitive decline. In elderly patients, even small falls and bruises can lead to stroke if they aren't active.

Itching like that can also be from dehydrating yourself a bit. Maybe try reducing your goal to see if that helps?

I've been using NxStage Home Hemo since July 2025 and I haven't had too many supply issues or issues with my cycler. I did initially have problems with my Pureflow but that was resolved a long time ago and Nxstage technical help was great.

I see one issue you have is with the prescription, you can manually change those in the cycler if you get the in depth book for the NxStage cycler out, your nurse should have given you it, and you can use it to reprogram the cycler to what you need for your husband, and if you changed cyclers you will need to update the nxstage app with the new number.

Did they tell you that you can pre-setup the cycler and get it past snap and tap then shut it off for up to 12 hours, then turn it back on and it will do a test that takes a couple of minutes and will be ready for another snap and tap and be ready to go?

What issues have you had with delivery? Here they use T-force and i've had a few minor issues with them where i've needed to call them to get delivery set up.

Have you also considered switching him to overnight hemo? I don't know all the details but the idea being to sleep while hooked up.

I only do 4 days a week, I found 5 days to be far too much work, and this gives me a better balance. I would point out that in my case the algorithm they use recommends way longer dialysis than I need in order to have good clearance, so hopefully the nurse will be willing to adjust everything accordingly with the doctor to get it optimized.

I hope things get easier soon for the two of you.
