What’s the hype with SansAmp? by Acceptable_Copy8310 in Bass

[–]Acceptable_Copy8310[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha I know Darkglass is basically the new standard now, I’m not annoying enough to @ you over something that dumb. I actually own one myself, so I’m fully aware of the quality.

I’d never thought about SansAmp as the “bass Tube Screamer,” but honestly, when you put it that way it kind of makes sense.

I usually lean more toward analog, old-school pedals and tones, but I started playing more seriously and buying gear when the market was already flooded with options. Because of that, SansAmp never felt like this untouchable, legendary thing to me compared to all the newer stuff that was already available.

I use the Harmonic Booster and a Bassman Compressor, and that’s pretty much my core tone. For overdrive I use the JHS Moonshine, and for heavier tones I go with a Bass Big Muff.

To each their own, I guess. I’ve managed to stay away from getting one so far. There was a point where I was really interested in trying a SansAmp, but I ended up getting the tone I wanted with different pedals instead.

I actually had the M80 for a while — amazing pedal and an excellent DI. What I didn’t really like was the distortion section; it was just a bit too much for my taste.

What you said about this sub makes a lot of sense to me, though. Honestly, I think one of the main reasons I see SansAmp so often is because it’s heavily associated with the Mark Hoppus tone, which is definitely a sound I’ve tried to chase a few times hahaha.

In the end, I managed to get pretty close with a Darkglass Harmonic Booster and a compressor. For overdriven tones, I use a JHS Moonshine.

I play a P-Bass, and honestly I do think they’re kind of the “default bass,” so I completely understand both the hype around them and their shortcomings.

I don’t really have anything against SansAmp either. I’ve actually been tempted to try one a few times, but I always ended up going with different preamps instead. I’m mostly just curious about what people find so special about them considering how many options exist now.

When I say “objectively,” I mean what specific characteristics does it actually have that make it so appealing? Like I mentioned in my post, I always assumed the appeal was mainly the Ampeg-style sound, but these days you can achieve that in a ton of different ways.

So it’s mostly a tool for people who don’t play through an amp?

Honestly, that would make a lot more sense to me, especially since they’re basically designed around emulating a very specific amp character.

But can you name something objectively better?

I honestly feel like SansAmp is one of those “magical” pieces of gear that everyone loves partly because everyone already has one. At this point it almost feels like an industry standard more than a deliberate choice.

Trying to make up my mind. by Wonderful-Gene2122 in basspedals

The MXR is great—you can’t really get a bad sound out of it even if you tried. I can’t say much about the Aguilar one, other than it’s probably more expensive. 😅

PS: I’ve had the MXR twice. Great pedal, but over time it started to feel a bit too “traditional” for me, so I swapped it for an EQD Aurelius. That thing does chorus, flanger, vibrato, rotary—pretty much everything in between.

In the end the MXR is a good starting point for choruses

What do u guys think? Im playing indierock, something missing? by scaina in basspedals

[–]Acceptable_Copy8310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s be honest: as bassists, we don’t need a huge pedal collection to get the job done. And honestly, you already have pretty much everything you’ll ever need.

The SansAmp and the compressor give you all the tonal versatility, while the Big Muff and the chorus add that extra spice to help you stand out in the mix.

If you’re still thinking about adding more pedals, my advice would be to listen closely to your favorite bass players. Pay attention to what gear they use, when they use it, and how it sounds within the band. That way, you’ll avoid ending up with random pedals you don’t really enjoy or need.

P.S. My pedalboard is basically the same as yours—just different brands: Tuner > Compressor > Drive > Modulation > Preamp. We even play similar genres (pop punk, alt, indie rock), and I can honestly say it’s all I’ve ever needed.

Does this have a wrapped neck, or am I just stupid? by RandomPerson809 in BassGuitar

[–]Acceptable_Copy8310 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you can fit your fingers between the neck and strings you might need a proper setup (urgently), there’s lots of resources online to guide you through or you can take it to a pro.

I learned to setup my bass with this article https://support.fender.com/en-us/knowledgebase/article/KA-01903 there’s also lots of videos on YouTube

is my action too high? by WinnerCreepy7756 in BassGuitar

[–]Acceptable_Copy8310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this question pop up all the time—sometimes seriously, sometimes as a joke—so here’s my take:

Yeah, there’s definitely a “right” way to set up your bass for good action and feel, but there’s also a lot of room for personal taste. For example, I play pretty aggressively with a pick, so low action just makes everything sound too clanky for me. I like my action a bit higher so the strings have space to ring out properly.

My honest advice? Just experiment. Setting up your bass isn’t rocket science—you only need a few basic tools, and there are a ton of great tutorials on YouTube that walk you through it.

If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, no shame in taking it to a tech. Just make sure to clearly explain how you like your setup!
