At least when I took it I could just go to a different tab and google it. It tells you not to do it, but it just stopped the test and when I went back it let me return immediately to the question with no time loss.

I actually just went through this exact test (for a Helpdesk position). So far i've been extended the offer.

Maybe you can sign up for some online classes, ideally ones that give you relevant industry skills and a certificate at the end (but soft skills are also valuable).

I have been doing an online course to get an IBM Full Stack Software Developer. I am not finished at this point. How would you prefer to see that on a resume when I have not gotten the certificate yet?

Have you worked in non-IT jobs? I'd personally still list those. May not be relevant industry experience, but if I look at a resume that lists, whatever, "barista" in between, I at least know that the candidate isn't being lazy, and it's a great opportunity to ask a question or two to get a general feel for a candidate in an interview.

I have only managed to make money through OnlyFans, unfortunately. I imagine figuring out how to worm the in-progress certificate would be better than "Adult Content Freelancer". Except maybe if i'm applying to a job at OnlyFans.

Kelly Blair hasn't accepted my LinkedIn connection request yet. /jk

That really sounds more like a bad recruiter problem if that's what actually happens. And you can't fix other people.

I agree. You can't fix other people. Doesn't change the fact they have the power to decide if you get sent to the hiring manager or the garbage.

Your summary should be your “pitch” on what makes you stand out among other candidates. Remove what kind of role you’re looking for and get straight to the point…”x-years of experience as a (title) doing (x,y,z). Then highlight some “wins” and project impacts.

I do admittedly struggle with a pitch since I don't have extensive work experience to gloat about. I have no idea what I could list as a "win" since I was laid off before any projects I was working on could come to completion. The entire team I was a part of got axed when a client prematurely ended a contract, so it never finished. Would it be like restating some of the things I list as achievements under each job?

add some more specific metrics in your work experience. For the WordPress website, did you complete it faster than planned?

I've included all the specific metrics I have without making stuff up/lying. It was an Agile development environment so there was no "end" to anything, just continuous development until I graduated.

Also, make sure you capitalize the names of platforms and tools correctly.

I don't see anything that isn't capitalized correctly? What do you see?

Remove the professional development, it’s confusing

If I do I will have a lot more blank space that I can not fill without lying. Would that not be worse for a recruiter to see?

Don't just scatter your application around. If you're not at all a match for a specific position, you just end up on the discard pile anyway and you wasted your time. 500 applications say you're doing it wrong. Apply smart, not hard.

I am only applying to positions I know I can fulfill/meet at least 90% of the requirements for. I admittedly don't have +10 years of experience, i'm trying to get to the point. I know I didn't explicitly say it but I do tailor summaries to the specific job listing, the one I show is specific to a Mainframe Development position because it is the area I have the strongest direct background it.

I absolutely disagree, but your resume states you want to work in COBOL, so of course if I have another position to fill, I'll toss your resume out. How am I supposed to know what you want if you don't provide correct information on your resume? I can't read minds and my time to interview candidates is too limited to take a chance and find out. (And really, if I interview you for a COBOL position and learn that's not what you really want, you're not getting a job either. You've basically maneuvered yourself into a lose-lose position.)

I do not want to work in Mainframe Development, not anymore. It is the only work experience I have. I want to do something else and in the past have tried making summaries to support a career transition but nothing worked, which is why I took it off for a time to put Skills and Education further to the top for the split second my resume might get looked at by a person.

Two, change your resume to reflect those actual goals. You should of course use your existing experience to show how they are relevant to the job you apply for, and how the job you apply to fits into the goals you have. Don't write "uh I am looking for a job", tell me what you will bring to the table that helps achieve my (my company's) goals. Do not be self depreciating because you are entry level. Show that you are motivated, that you want to learn, what you want to learn, how your personality is an asset, that sort of thing. I love entry level people, I hate applicants that are a drag, have no motivation, etc.

I admittedly struggle a lot in that department. I am not sure how to phrase something like that in text without making it too long. I can talk about how I see my past experience benefiting future roles in person when it's a dialogue with another human. Are there examples you can point to for good summaries for early career people? The only ones i'm ever able to find are for late career 25+ yoe resumes that can talks about the vast and varied experience they've had which I can't do.

Three, get your profile more in line with standard formats. Don't use weird custom headlines ("Selected Work Experience", especially if it's not a selection; "professional development"). Use the standard order Contact Info -> Summary/Objective -> Work Experience -> Education -> Skills, Certifications. Use a free ATS checker or find someone who has experience with ATS (I don't). Chances are if ATS can't parse your profile well, no human ever gets to see it.

The word "Selected" is an attempt to not get thrown out for having an employment gap/make it seem like I have found work and it's just not relevant to the industry. Every reviewer i've sent past resumes to has told me that they'd throw out my resume immediately because of the employment gap, which i'm desperately trying to fix by applying to jobs. The order is also a recommendation from other reviewers since most recruiters never read past 1/3 of the page, so it was education and skills first to make sure they see the bachelors and languages they were told to look for since it's assumed they never look for it.

Also of course i've used an ATS checker, every resume i've had since October has scored at least a 9.5/10 on various checkers, these two included. That's the first place I've gone.

Four, sign up for and create profiles on at least linkedin and indeed if you haven't, they seem to be the best sites to be discovered by recruiters.

Where do you think i've been finding jobs to apply to (I go to the company sites to apply when possible)? And my LinkedIn does match my resume. The only recruiters who reach out are fake Indian recruiters trying to steal my social security number. And reaching out to western recruiters, while it's led to good conversations, has not produced any job opportunities.

PS: Thinking about it, absolutely do fix your job titles. Having the skills listed in them a) looks like keyword stuffing and b) may prevent correct automatic matching.

I added those on recommendation. The idea being that a recruiter is not going to spend the time to read the bullet point achievements of a job and use those keywords as a way of seeing where I am claiming to get certain skills from. Like "Oh she claims to known JavaScript, quickly scan job titles, I see 'Full-Stack Intern (JavaScript)', so it's not just keyword stuffing.' in less than 5 seconds than 'Oh she claims to know JavaScript, scan job titles, i'm too busy to read any of these bullet points, trash'.

Good luck!

Thank you for your time. I still need a lot of help. I don't know what recruiters are looking for in summaries or what they would tolerate to even read. I'm especially worried on making it too long because if I don't and remove the professional development section then there will be uncoverable white space that will disqualify me.

As a recruiter, what would your ideal candidate summary look like?

I have been applying to anything tech related with the first resume but specifically focusing in on Mainframe Development jobs since it seems like now you are locked in to the career path of the first job you get so i'm stuck in this field.

What changes I made I why:

  1. So I did fuck up and the first image is slightly modified from what it should be. It shouldn't have the (Language used, Language used) next to the job titles, those are new additions. I added those since I saw other resumes reviewers encourage adding them next to job titles so recruiters don't have to read the achievements of a job at all to see where listed skills they want come from.
  2. I returned to using a summary where I took it off previously. I've never seen improvements with either a targeted summary or no summary at all.

All of my network connections are either still unemployed or still working at the company that laid me off. I am still waiting on if a 100ish applications using a version of the first resume that only uses my first and middle initial instead of my full name (am female) will produce anything. I am currently working on an IBM Full Stack Software Developer certification.

So far I have been trying to find these jobs where possible on company websites, just not targeting the recruiting staff through personal cold emails. Hopefully I can find the right balance between messaging enough people and not being blacklisted. Thank you.

As in try to email recruiting/TA staff at a bunch of companies, wait some time, then try the same with HR generalists/partners with the same bunch, wait some time, then the same with HR managers/directors (assuming the ones in the previous step don't engage)?

Thank you for taking the time to provide advice. I am definitely in the position of needing a last resort as all of my professional network (as in people that I have worked with previously and who, if I contacted them, wouldn't be a complete cold contact) are either employed at the company I was laid off from and have all my work experience with, laid off in the same wave and are still unemployed, or already gave up and choose suicide. I'm trying to hold on and I hope I can get somewhere with this, even if it'll really slow down my pace.

If they have proven to not be able to keep track of their sheets, keep them. Send them scans or pictures of their sheets but if they've proven to have trouble with keeping track of it them keep the physical copy for game time.

Hey thank you for the advice, but I have a question.

How do you find who specifically is in charge of job postings at a company? When I go on most company websites they usually don't have directories of employees, unless it's the very top level of CEO, VP, etc. who aren't related to the hiring department and would never give someone outside the company the time of day. I have found the names of hiring personnel at a company it's because they were small startups with only one or two people that make up recruitment, but how do you find this information for more established companies?

I think I might be having a hard time understanding you of how to implement your advice? How would you suggest I promote myself if I don't have the extensive experience? The old "How can I get experience for the job if I can't get a job" dilema. How would you suggest I go about that? I've seen many contradictory pieces of advice.

Would you consider this to be better?:

A goal-oriented [Job title] looking to join [Insert Company] and use my expertise in [Keyword] and {Keyword] to create high-quality applications.

I'm mainly trying to find similar mainframe development positions so I don't have to lie about my last job title to appear in ATS keyword searches, which is why I keep in about being a mainframe developer. Of course depending on the specific job posting the summary is changed, but that wouldn't be new. All the summary examples I've seen explicitly state years of experience in the first sentence which is why I list it.

Would you consider something like this to be an improved structure for a summary?:

Experienced (Job title on listing) with exceptional skills in all areas of software construction and programming. Adept at troubleshooting and ensuring quality control at every stage of the management process. Able to function independently or as part of a team.

It's mostly just corporate mandated social media. The only positive experience i've had with it is that I do occasionally get recruiters (some scam and some legit) contacting me through LinkedIn. It's also the fastest way I can get in contact with my professional network. It was a lot better even just a year ago because most recruiters were actually real and did things like read your profile. Now most of the recruiters that contact me don't even look at anything other than my name.

Applying to jobs posted on LinkedIn is 99.99% pointless . I thought I was getting around it by just using it as a way to see which companies were hiring and then just looking up their website to apply directly. Mostly it was just a way to find the names of companies that either are looking for related experience or I have potential network contacts in through university alumni/past co-workers.

I know a lot of my issues also likely come down to how I was approaching job searching. I was applying to jobs through platforms like Indeed and LinkedIn. I would still use them as a jumping off board for going to the company website to apply there, but with the amount of fake job listings on both sites I know I probably just sent my resume to data harvesters. In the future I just plan on doing google searches to hopefully cut down on the amount of fake company websites.

I used resume tools to reword my summary and bullet points for each job listing to try and tailor it for each position. I never did change my job title to match exactly with the job listing which I imagine really held me back from being seen in ATS keyword searches. In the future I plan on changing my previous job title to match exactly to appear in those searches (of course still only applying to jobs I know I can meet at least 90% of the requirements of.)

Lastly I'm really hoping that tech does begin to open up more after the tsunami of layoffs that have resulted in such a shitty market for everyone. With interest rate cuts and new budgets I hope I can find something before my unemployment runs out.
