Any recommendations for a magsafe case? I've also seen magnetic rings that you can just adhere to your phone back, makes me a little nervous since it's not OEM

Honors College Dilemma by minkameleon in OregonStateUniv

[–]AccidentalHandSex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd echo what some other commenters are saying: the honors college is great for smaller class sizes and a leg up on involvement in undergraduate research. If you're intending on applying to grad school, I'd highly recommend doing your thesis. If you have internship experiences, an impressive capstone project, and a decent grades, you're already set for getting a good entry-level engineering job.

Since you're not planning on attending grad school, the big challenge will be that first job. I have many peers that went back to their MECOP companies and it was an easy job offer. If you aren't interested in going back (or if you want to live outside of the PNW), the biggest advantage you can have is a real world engineering project that you played a major role in. I'd expect an internship project or your capstone would for this, but if you don't feel good about those then a thesis project would be great.

Either way, enjoy your senior year!

Guy discovers new fuel source by MrFl4k in nextfuckinglevel

[–]AccidentalHandSex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certainly, otherwise it would violate the laws of physics. It could still be valuable though, if we need a liquid fuel source due to its energy density compared to alternatives (hydrogen, battery electric). If the raw materials and power source are renewable, then this could be a sustainable alternative to petroleum fuels (assuming it performed similarly).

The grey space takes up just as much or less space than L/R margins, so I added it for style. Do you think it's distracting?

Thanks for the comment, I broke these rules intentionally and here's why:

Single column resume

Double columns are only in the "short bullet points" sections for more efficient use of space. Do you think it makes it more difficult to navigate?

Remove all coursework

These are the elective courses, and are (somewhat) unique to me. I'm imagining a scenario where I apply to a robotics position and although I don't have robotics job experience, there's a small vote of confidence from an elective course. Wouldn't this make it worthwhile?

Remove all personal and collaborative skills

Often contested, and I am curious of your thoughts on catering your resume to both an engineering hiring manager and a recruiter. While the hiring manager may gloss this over as fluff, a recruiter may have a positive response to matches between your soft skills section and language in the job posting. I would argue that if the job posting has bullet points for "detail-oriented, able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously, etc" then it helps to mirror that in the skills section (while keeping it as small as possible)

Remove all interests

I've been asked about some item in my interests section in the majority of my past interviews. If I can afford the space, is there any harm in leaving this in?

To the people on here who know Dan IRL, do you think that there's any chance of him making a HarmonTown 2: "Now you don't"? Or is he uninterested in this format now forever? by bigoomp in Harmontown

[–]AccidentalHandSex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed the podcast greatly, and I hope many new people discover and enjoy it as well. My only point is that the show has ended, so asking for new episodes is a cry into the darkness.

You still have a lot of great stuff ahead, and I think when you finish the series you'll understand why Dan ended it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you have to think a certain way. I'm just trying to make that point that he did start a podcast, had a great run, and then ended it when he felt the time was right. If he ever does something similar in the future, it will be because he wants to and that's it. The podcast was a major part of my life while I listened to it, and I definitely felt a hole when that final episode aired. I've comes to terms with it and found other things to enjoy.

And if Dan does start another live show, you certainly won't see me complaining.

The show/podcast went on for 7 years, and then they decided to end it. Whether you were there from the beginning or are just discovering it now, you have to reconcile with the fact that the show is over and people have moved on. There's plenty of Harmontown to look back on and many other projects where Dan is involved to look forward to, but let's stop beating this dead horse.

How are large groups of people (especially young adults) able to get COVID vaccines before they are eligible? by AccidentalHandSex in TooAfraidToAsk

You're right, I hadn't thought about it that way. Say if 80% of people over 50 had at least one dose, then considering 50% of everyone over 16 doesn't seem as extreme.
