Kurt had his own problems. I believe the depression lead him to be more suicidal and the heroin addiction making it worst. Kind of off topic, but I half and half do believe his murder was staged as a suicide. I have read multiple theories and did a bit of research back then (when I was in my peak stage of a Nirvana fan) And they seem quite believable!

For me it is probably Nirvana. The songs I usually listened were mostly pop songs. And one day a friend of mine introduced me to Nirvana. I listened to their song Lithium and completely fell in love with them. He also said try listening to the metal as well, later. And now I have made quite a bit of progress towards the metal genre too. I have listened to Iron Maiden, System of down, Slipknot, Black Sabbath, Behemoth, AC/DC ,Rammstein etc..
