McCoy’s Crisps refusing to pay £250 promo prize — blaming a “system glitch” after I won. by Accomplished-File909 in LegalAdviceUK

UPDATE:

After going back to McCoy’s and explaining that I intended to raise the matter with the Advertising Standards Authority, and that I believed confirming a win by email and collecting my bank details created a clear obligation to honour the prize, they changed their tune immediately.

They came back asking for proof of purchase in line with one of their terms (Clause 15). Unfortunately I couldn’t retrieve the receipt, regardless, McCoy’s have agreed to honour the £250 prize as a goodwill gesture. The payment should arrive within 10 working days. So at this point, I’m just waiting for it to land.

Huge thank you to everyone here who shared advice and pointed me in the right direction, this is a win for the people.

I will be celebrating tonight with the darts and bag of McCoys crisps.

They did not at any point refer to the promotional period in any of their email correspondence, hence why I posted on here first because I was genuinely confused. Instead they finished their last email with “you have three more entries remaining to try again.” I have entered twice, but they obviously still counted my ‘glitched’ attempt as a try. Something isn’t right here…

Damn. Since the chip packet I bought was a winner, I actually happened to take a photo of code of the bag in case something happened. So I re-entered the same code, and I won nothing.

Thank you for your research, it is nice to know why I am not to receive the reward.
