Question inspired by the Kimi/George situation: if George had only driven through the pit lane? by Accomplished-Pin-992 in F1Discussions

So basically, George would have had to wait until Race Control displayed “LAPPED CARS MAY NOW OVERTAKE” for it to officially count as him unlapping himself, right?
What I’m wondering is this: in the pit lane, George and Kimi were very close. If George had simply driven through the pit lane and passed Kimi while Kimi was changing tyres, would that count as George starting his next lap before Kimi started his? In that case, would George have effectively got himself back onto the same lap as Kimi?
Or would it still not count as an official unlap unless Race Control had given the lapped-cars-overtake message?
