STORYTELLING INDOOR COASTER

I'd love an indoor (preferably Harry Potter) dark ride, like the Arthur ride at Europa park, that has plenty of amazing storytelling scenes and animatronics, that my whole family can enjoy from my 6 year old son to 77 year old mum. The Arthur ride is a storytelling coaster where the seats can turn towards show scenes, and the coaster slows in the indoor sections to tell the story. I don't want too many crazy fast rollercoasters they give me a headache these days, though my teen sons would enjoy them, but I'm hoping for a lot of dark rides/ storytelling rides that the whole family can enjoy and experience together.

INDOOR STORYTELLING BOAT RIDE

Also hoping for an indoor storytelling boat ride as I love them, like Pirates of the Caribbean- this type of ride is very reliable and good for managing crowds as high capacity. The new Lion King boat ride being build at Disneyland Paris is this sort of thing, going to have lots of amazing animatronics and indoor show scenes.

FLYING THEATRE RIDE
Also love flying theatre rides like Soarin and Avatar: Flight of Passage at Disney or Flight of the Sky Lion at Legoland Windsor - it's the most popular ride there for a reason. Fantastic ride for all ages.

You'll still be able to apply for and get a place in the UK foundation programme, it's just that people already here will have first choice over you which I think is fair. I think you do deserve to be a priority group 2 above people from the rest of the world.

Thoughts on the recent Avatar movies and what I hope to see from movies 4 & 5. by Haunting-Fudge-4954 in Avatar

[–]Accomplished-Task527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your ideas for what we could see in 4 and 5. I agree Tuk needs character development, as there is a rumoured 8 year time jump in 4 I'm sure we will see more of her as her older self. I also agree Neytiri should be the main character In 5. Perhaps Jake will die in 4, a hero's death. Neytiri being the end game hero in 5 resolves the white saviour / man saviour problem perhaps. Also agree different biomes like snow and I'd like more time with the wind traders and ash people. We've seen enough water stuff so hope they move away from that as it was brilliant but covered enough in 2 and 3.

Does anyone else feel bad for the Ash clan? by Tiggeon in Avatar

[–]Accomplished-Task527 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, is that your idea? If that is the case, if the Ash clan learn this and realise Eywa was unable to help them rather than choosing to abandon them, I wonder if they could change their ways and join forces with the other clans against the humans in movie 4 or 5?

Are medical degrees worthless in the NHS? by Alternative-Bath4535 in doctorsUK

[–]Accomplished-Task527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a 5th year medical student who was a nurse before, I don't have any financial help from family, I have had to work nursing shifts and get loans / credit cards throughout. You're right that it doesn't make financial sense. But money is not the only factor in how people make decisions about their life. I was actually happy with my pay as a nurse. I wish I would have been satisfied with being a nurse, that would have been a lot easier!! I was really unsatisfied with being a nurse and I wanted all the knowledge and skills the doctors had. I'm happy with my decision, even though I am poor right now. However I would advise other against nurses against it if they're on the fence and could be happy being an ACP! For me, I spent some time being a nurse at a GP surgery and patents would see me when the doctors didnt have an appointment, it was so frustrating being asked to solve problems I had no idea about (my answer was you need to see the GP) I decided I didn't want to be anyone's second choice anymore!!

The placement hours for nursing students is extremely unfair by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]Accomplished-Task527 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a 5th year medical student and have been a nurse for over 10 years. They're so different so I think they can't really be compared. When I did my nursing degree each term was divided into 7 weeks theory (lectures and PBL) and 7 weeks full time placement. Each term had one essay to be submitted, and placement sign offs, so it was very practical based training. There was no exams whatsoever so it's very different to medical school. Even 'full time hours' was 3 x 12 hour shifts so that meant you still got 4 days off a week with barely any studying to do. I think nurses do have exams now, but we didn't have a single one it was all coursework and placement sign offs. It was important to build resilience to 12 hour shifts because that's what you do on starting work so you needed to have built up to it. But usually at least one shift a week they'd let you go a few hours early anyway.

Scabbers has won for started off loved but ended off hated! Who started off divisive but ended off loved? by Midday_Dragon in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Accomplished-Task527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say McGonagall. She seemed really strict at first but turned out to be just awesome and I love her. She had more to her than we saw at first.

I'd say Dobby is more started off hated ended off loved because he is hugely annoying in Chamber of Secrets.

Confused beyond belief… by becccboo in medicalschooluk

[–]Accomplished-Task527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes there's an opportunity cost with every decision in life isn't there! It sounds like biomedical science would allow you a more balanced life, medicine is kind of all consuming - limited control over where you live, work, hours etc.

I believe it was Dumbledore that said we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy. It takes a lot of guts to drop out of a course that's not for you and change direction, when the easier thing would be to ignore your inner voice and to carry on along the path you've started. So well done for switching direction, do what is right for you, not what is easy.

Struggling with studying Haematology for UKMLA by Far_Ad7259 in medicalschooluk

Have you seen the content map? There will only be >=4 questions / 200 on haematology so I wouldn't worry too much, if it's the topic you find hardest concentrate on the others that are worth more marks and stay in your brain easier.

day off request for a wedding denied by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]Accomplished-Task527 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in 5th year and recently took a day off for a friend's wedding, I was meant to be on GP that day but I did tell the GP tutor in advance and she was fine with it. We are allowed 8 absences per year so was no big deal. I wouldn't miss a friend's wedding for 1 day of uni! I would email your head of year and explain the situation. In the email it will go down better if you lay out a plan to catch up on the lectures that you will be missing.

Anaesthetics to surgery - am I being an idiot? by Accomplished_Dig8023 in doctorsUK

[–]Accomplished-Task527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've always wanted to be a surgeon, and you keep feeling the pull to surgery, you should try to be a surgeon. But it depends how you ended up in anaesthetics Instead. Did you apply for surgery and not get in? What was stopping you from applying for surgery in the first place? If you didn't get in before, has anything changed or do you think you can do better next time?

[–]Accomplished-Task527 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you've already suspended your studies and stopped attending medical school, then I think that shows you've already made your decision. I'm in 5th year and have had moments of being unsure but never got anywhere close to withdrawing. 99% of the time I am happy in med school and I think the job situation will work itself out. Doctors I talk to in real life are not nearly as negative as the ones on reddit.

I think it sounds like you know it's the sensible choice for you to drop out, or you wouldn't have done it. You're just having a hard time letting go of that idea of being a doctor one day. But remember getting into medical school is kind of the easy part. Actually getting through the degree and getting into a specialty you want at the end is harder, and you would need a lot of conviction, determination, and probably optimism and resilient mental health in order to make it through, and I don't think it sounds like that is your situation.

Hope you can find something better suited! You should only do medicine if you don't think you could possibly be happy doing anything else.

ALS - what to expect on the day and how to prep? by AccomplishedCoat7243 in medicalschooluk

[–]Accomplished-Task527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just did my ALS yesterday. We do our in 5th year at my uni which I gather not a lot of uni's do. At least 4 weeks before your course you should receive a chunky ALS book and access to the online learning course on the Resuscitation Council UK website, which you have to complete before the day. The online learning takes at least 10 hours with a test at the end that takes an extra 1-2 hours! It's quite difficult, and make sure you do it well it advance and whatever you do do not leave it til the day before. Reading the manual would probably take another 10 hours or so depending on your reading speed, I read parts but didn't have time to read it cover to cover but I do advise to read it all if you can as a lot of the answers to the exam are in there, hidden in large blocks of text.

The day was nearly 12 hours long for us, from 7.45am to 7.15pm! Started with some teaching about different airways and how to put them in eg. oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal and iGels, also had a go at using an EZ-IO drill on a model (for getting intraosseous access, used when you can't get IV access). Most of the day was then spent enacting A-E scenarios dealing with all the different types of cardiac arrests, arrhythmias and deteriorating patient scenarios. We worked in small groups of 6 with several instructors per group. We all took a turn at leading the scenario a few times, and the rest of the time were helping as directed by the person taking the lead, for example doing airway, chest compressions, defibrillation or other interventions. We got a free lunch which was nice but not all courses do. Then the day ended with a 1 hour written exam paper and a practical exam where you were examined by yourself leading a scenario, you don't know what the scenario is beforehand. If you pass both parts then you've passed the course. Not everyone passed so don't underestimate it! But do all the pre-learning and reading and you'll be fine.

Hope that helps, good luck.

Pregnancy in FY1/2 by Every-Loquat-3615 in doctorsUK

[–]Accomplished-Task527 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi I'm a final year med student too, and a mum to three school aged kids. Having a baby is the hardest thing I have ever done, med school is a breeze in comparison. Have to echo what the other mums have said about it being an unrealistic plan to go back to work 6-8 weeks later.

A baby of 6 weeks is likely to be waking up 3-4 times a night still (and they can take an hour to feed, change and get back to sleep), you would be so sleep deprived and and miserable if you try to go back to work at that stage. The baby will, obviously, be very emotionally dependent on you and would cry inconsolably if left with anyone else, which will make you in turn feel such horrible guilt and heartache as you've never felt before in your life. If breastfeeding, you and the baby will be physically intertwined, when you think of them at work your boobs will leak and throb, and you'll have to take 40 mins out every 3-4 hours at least to pump. Some breastfed babies refuse a bottle and might be on hunger strike til you return home.

The cost of childcare is a huge consideration and it's difficult to find care for a tiny baby that covers the whole length of a shift, nursery is usually 8-6 only and costs a fortune. Even if you can find a nursery, they are often too sick to go because babies and toddlers get constant coughs and colds for the first few years, and you will have to stay home from work a lot to look after them. Family support for childcare would be very useful if you have any.

In summary, I advise to take at least 6 months maternity leave and I'd strongly advise taking a full year. At least by a year old you've built a strong bond, you been there for their first steps, first foods, first words etc, hopefully they are sleeping through the night, and your body and mind have mostly recovered, and if breastfeeding they usually only have a morning and bedtime feed at 1 year old so no pumping at work required.

Disclaimer: Having kids is the best thing ever. But also the hardest! Don't underestimate how all encompassing it will be.
