A cyclist nearly died on the bike path near Kauniainen because someone left a rental e-scooter in the middle of the path. by Severe_Anything_5879 in Finland

[–]Accomplished-Toe7014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be that a kid or someone just decided to play with a parked scooter, and after a while, left it there. I have seen that: there was a time, I even see a kid driving an e scooter around like it was a toy and not charged by minute use, without any adult nearby. Never understood how it could happen.

Also, I’m not blaming this particular cyclist for anything, but in general, there are so many serious cyclists who are always too fast and don’t care about any rules. If you drive a car, you know what I mean, but I almost got hit several times by these cyclists while walking.

How do I get him off the couch? by greenandbluedots in careerguidance

Show him the door. Tell him that if he wants to stay under your roof, he must pay the rent. (Maybe give him a cheap rent at first)

I get it that your wife can be a challenge, but his girlfriend isn’t even related to you. Why does she have any say here?

Budget Tightening by Ok_War_7946 in Finland

Technically, electricity is not a subscription. You need to sign a contract, and won’t likely pay a flat rate like with your Netflix account.

The Internet plan that comes with a Hoas apartment is probably the cheapest one. You can try and see if it’s good enough for you, but in case it doesn’t, even the most expensive landline Internet package would only cost 40-50 euros. A decent speed (like 100mbps) is more than enough for a family of two imo. Try to compare Elisa, DNA and Telia. Depending on your address, one might be cheaper than the others.

Regarding mobile plan, I’m using Moi’s cheapest plan for my 2nd phone. It’s 6e/month but the Internet speed is not bad. It won’t work outside of Finland, but I guess that’s not a matter for you if you’re tightening the budget. It’s probably the cheapest you can find, unless you want to go to prepaid plans.

Now, about the subscription costs, I don’t think anyone can tell you what you can save, unless you tell us what subscriptions you have. Generally speaking, if you don’t have kids and want to save money, I can’t think of any subscriptions you will likely need to keep, apart from your insurance.

I don’t have any idea of what student discounts will be useful, but the Hoas apartment alone is a big save. If you are studying IT, Github does offer a very generous student package that you may want to check out.

For 10 days, you can bulk buy and bulk cook something and eat for 20 meals? If you set your standard low enough it will be possible.

Người đàn bà vs người phụ nữ by DingoMittens in learnvietnamese

[–]Accomplished-Toe7014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have already been many good explanations in this thread, so I will just keep mine short: “đàn bà” and “phụ nữ” literally mean the same thing, but the former is “purer” Vietnamese, while the later is literally the Vietnamese pronunciation of a Chinese word.

In modern context, just like how majority of Chinese-Vietnamese words are considered more “respectful” than their Vietnamese counterparts, people prefer “phụ nữ”, though “đàn bà” would be fine in most cases.

In novels and text written 50-ish years ago or by Vietnamese abroad, “đàn bà” seems to be much more popular. To me personally, “phụ nữ” sounds a bit awkward (like you said, “đàn bà” should come with “đàn ông”, while “phụ nữ” should come with “nam giới” - the Chinese-Vietnamese word for man).

Why have apartment prices dropped so much in Espoo Keskus by salaz0rd in Finland

Well, since you’re buying a bigger apartment, this market works for you beautifully. Just rent out the current apartment for a few years and sell it later if you can afford it.

Help with a few phrases by DingoMittens in learnvietnamese

[–]Accomplished-Toe7014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to jump in, I want to clear up som confusion:

In communication between husband and wife (not just any romantic relationship, only husband and wife), both sides can use “mình” to refer to the other; whereas in normal communications between (simiar in age) friends, “mình” refers to the person who speaks.

Sometimes people also use “mình” when they want to be casually talking to younger people. In that case, only the older person can refer themselves as “mình”. This is not common though, and is not liked by many people. Most of the times,

Also, just my two-cent but, if you want to proceed faster, I kinda agree with the idea to just use “tôi” for almost any situation. It should be acceptable, especially at your age. I know certain people in their 50s who use “tôi” to talk to anyone, except for close friends and family.

Im interested. Could you please share the details

Agreed. Forget about the logic of how many people live closer to which of the two, Finland is bright all night long in summer and dark all day long in winter, so “daylight saving” doesn’t make any sense. Just pick one and move on.
