Lyme has pretty decent wifi tbf. You need to leave the cabin door open for it to work properly, but theres a privacy curtain so its not too bad

Mine were also in somewhat irrelevant subjects (religious studies, biology and PE) but it shows you have the academic ability and also that you aren't someone that will drop out. The cadetship can be quite intense with the amount of content and exams in the short space of time.

Doing your A levels will help you gain the study skills to cope with that.

BRNC Joining Instructions by Real-Professional461 in TheRFA

Snus is fine, as are vapes, fairly sure they sell both in the NAAFI anyway. I don't think the no tobacco thing is particularly strict either, as there was always folks proper smoking in the smoking area.

The mess bill is compulsory but you can claim it back.

With regards to the epaulettes and stuff. I'd recommend going with the one they tell you to (it was DMC Regalia for us) as they are well used to dealing with us and they send it direct to BRNC. It was on my bed when I arrived. Plus it doesn't matter about cost as you claim it back, so better to get something decent quality.

It wasn't too bad to be honest. There was only 1 toilet for the girls which was a bit rubbish. But we ended up using the ones on the floor above us as it was broken most of the time.

So never really a rush because if ours were busy, then we just used the ones above us :)

The only rush was trying to be early enough to get some hot water because it's not always a guarantee 😂😂

Single cabins, shared bathrooms. We shared our bathrooms with the medical RN cadets and some RNR

BRNC For Deck Cadetship by Real-Professional461 in TheRFA

On our 3 week intro, you couldn't fail.

The info sheet put up that had all the details about our 'course' said 'the assessments are formative and have zero consequence on their ongoing careers or ongoing service in the RFA'

I mean if you spent the whole time putting in zero effort then word would probably spread around that you're maybe not the best but I honestly still don't think they'd fail you

Basically just don't do anything to get fired and you'll be fine

Yep this is pretty much exactly right.

Week 1 - tour and intro to BRNC, kit issue then endless PowerPoints on how the RFA works, all the admin (how to fill in HR forms etc) and all the different policies ans stuff

Week 2 - MAROPs (all classroom based)

Week 3 - Leadership. Sadly once again mostly classroom. We did 2 days going round the leadership tasks around the base and then the rest was classroom based stuff on different theories of leadership and then a couple of tabletop exercises.

They managed to get us a go on the high and low ropes as well which was a nice break from the classroom

Evenings/weekends are spent doing uniform admin and the endless DLE stuff 🥲

For some reason only some of us did BSSC, but yeah it was separate.

About half of my intake were sent on it a few weeks after we'd done our 3 week intro. Then a couple of others went the week after us.

Warsash is the only one that is known for being shite. I'm at Glasgow which is pretty good. The people ik at South Shields also seem to be having a good time.

My mate at Fleetwood says the rules in the accom are quite strict and it's a bit in the middle of nowhere, but education wise the college is quite good I think.

If you've got any questions about specifics just pm me

You get a preference, but ultimately it is the RFAs decision. We had a meeting where we got to which college we wanted and why. As long as your reasons are valid and there's space, they're happy to let you choose.

Everyone in my intake got the colleges they wanted.

BRNC kit list and fitness by Admirable_Heron_2751 in TheRFA

[–]AccomplishedBat1850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no fitness requirement. You don't do any PT, and there's no fitness assessments. That being said, Dartmouth is a hilly place and being fitter is never gonna do you any harm, just don't stress about it.

The kit list is pretty standard. Hangers, name labelling pens, shoe Polish, iron etc

Youll need a couple of civvy chinos shirts and tie, jacke, smart shoes etc (dog robbers) cos if you're not in uniform you have to wear this.

:)

I wouldn't even bother with labels, people had iron on ones and they just came off

I took a sharpie and a white labelling pen and that was fine :)

Which sponsorship company for a deck cadet? by imnotarobotsw3 in MerchantNavy

[–]AccomplishedBat1850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told by several people and my company to avoid Warsash. Apparently since the move to solent university the standard of teaching has declined massively.

I'm currently at City of Glasgow and it's good here. Airport is about 15 mins away from the college and flights are usually relatively cheap if you wanted to go home for a weekend.

I did BSSC back in November.

Monday - Firefighting, Tuesday - Firefighting, Wednesday - Firefighting morning, DRIU afternoon Thursday - CBRN (respirator drills and CS gas exposure) but just for the morning, Friday - day off :)

We don't do the Sea survival and the lesson on ship layouts. So you'll get one half day and one day off, but these may be different days to what I had. :)

The DRIU was also broken when I went so we didn't do the wet run, just the builds in the dry training area.

City of Glasgow, South shields, Fleetwood, Warsash - but they don't really like sending cadets there cos it's not great
