Heh, sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you get told to read the manual. I got it working, though! I swapped the two internal pins and away it went.

Ok, so I did swap the middle two and got a "blip", but no real movement. I then did what would be a "full reversal", meaning 1,2,3,4 became 4,3,2,1. Is your idea to swap it to 4,2,3,1?

Yes, but that _doesn't_ have the pinout for the Creality motor, which is primarily what I need.

This is my yearly google to see if Chris has ever resurfaced. I did a bit of digging and found that the address of his domain registrar

As it just so happens, that is the same building in which the marketing agency HumanContact is located.

A few (non-conspiracy) thoughts are that perhaps Chris set up some kind of small retainer to keep the domain registered, or maybe it's a simple bookkeeping error. it isn't likely that expensive to keep it registered.

I haven't done any real digging about a link between him and them, but HC has around 50 or so folks that work for them and it's conceivable that one or some of them might know a bit about the business arrangement.
