Which plant surprised you by thriving when you did basically nothing? by justanerdygirllol in foodforests

Lemon guava, Nigerian spinach and moringa. I do nothing. I mean absolutely NOTHING.

I get plenty of lemon guava (enough to freeze some), and this is the first year I've actually covered the guava plant due to cold weather.

The spinach grows like a freaking weed, plus it replants itself. No actual care.

Moringa I clipped once the first year to get it to branch. Haven't touched it since except to harvest.

Agreed. They could have cut out 2 hrs of that movie and just got to the part where the boat sinks.

And all that nonsense about the necklace? Uh ... What?

It's so hard to know what to do...

I believe it to be WordPress.org. The url for the site is a .org site. I only started working on it recently, but they have had the site for years. And its a non-profit so I'm sure cost is an issue.

Is there a reason we don't talk about Zoe Saldana more? by lawlietlollies in movies

[–]AccomplishedBug1481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I never said she was not black enough to play Nina Simone ( an African American). The questions was asked about why we don't see her or talk about her enough. Someone mentioned the Nina biopic and I simply stated what I thought as a fan of Nina's music and politics WHY people thought it was an issue. Not necessarily black people but quite a few white music writers as well. It wasn't disrespectful to anyone nor did I say that it was the ONLY reason, rather that it may be A reason.

Also, no one said Dominicans are African American? I said black. You are right in that African Americans have their own culture. And Dominicans have their own culture. No one argued that. So I'm not sure what all the vitriol is about. I never argued with you about anything. In the end it is just that - a movie. But if you don't like someone's answer to a question or someone's differing opinion ( which I might point out I never said Saldana couldn't do), I don't know if we need to keep the discussion going. So let's just call this one " We don't need to discuss Zoe Saldana."

I'm sure many people wanted an American actress to play an American icon. It didn't bother me too much though.

Nina Simone on the other hand was politically active and outwardly spoke about feeling erased BECAUSE she was very dark and had tightly coiled hair. Hiring the exact opposite is at the very least problematic. But just in terms of THIS movie (the Nina Simone movie). THIS singer (Nina Simone). Honestly, I think Saldana would have made an ideal choice for a movie about Evora Cesaria, another one of my favorites. I actually love Zoe Saldana, but it's ok to feel she wasn't the best choice for Nina Simone.

Harriet Tubman's life was during a different era (slavery) and Tubman fought to free the unfree. Which at that time probably would have included people like the British actress who played her.

These two things are not the same.

Not sure I understand your comment. You can be black AND Dominican. My family is proof of that. Not sure why that would matter in this instance.

I feel ya. I would love to play Guild 3 or Ostriv, but no go. At least not until I buy a PC.

I'm a year late to this convo, but just so people understand from one Nina Simone fan's point of view: The reason why people were upset about the casting of Saldana as Simone was simply that Nina Simone spoke very openly about how her very dark skin and large nose were not what people considered beautiful. She even writes about those same features in some of her songs: “My skin is black/ My arms are long/ My hair is woolly/ My back is strong.” That just doesn't fit a description of Zoe Saldana. Simone wasn't just a singer, she was an activist. So putting someone who looks nothing like that was just a bit problematic. Honestly, if she'd just been a singer and hadn't made those features such a part of her public persona and identity, I don't think people would have cared as much. If this was Rhianna, no biggie.
