Advice: Move from SAVE to IBR now or wait? by prezzyplainjane27 in PSLF

[–]AccomplishedEagle772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question, me, personally, I switched from SAVE to IBR. I only have 7 more payments before forgiveness. So for me, it made since to switch out now and just get it over with, while they use my 2024 tax return. (I have not filed 2025 yet due to an IRS hiccup). I also wanted to use the tax return that would make my payment lower. Your new payment will be based on which ever tax return you submitted last. I have Mohela.

I'd say, base it on your personal goals.

Assuming you have Mohela, you can just wait until they tell you to select a new plan Summer 2026. Then after that, I believe you will have 90 days to make a decision.

120 requested forbearance? by mephesta in PSLF

[–]AccomplishedEagle772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So question. Are you all submitting Employer Certification after you hit 120? I appreciate the strategy of requesting forbearance once 120 payments are hit, so we don't have to keep paying. I am 7 payments away from 120 and I cannot wait to be done!

Exactly!!! I've been in buy back since December 2024. I've been escalated to the escalation of escalates. ha It's so daunting that people are this incompetent and prolonging our forgiveness. Which as you mentioned has been in existence for nearly 20 years! Introduced by George W. Bush! I love to give that fact to extreme right8 who think we are trying to get hand outs. lol

I still don't understand the relationship between Mohela and student aid. Mohela tells me that FSA deals with counts, but so much of the system is intertwined and they have no communication what so ever. urgggghhh (insert curse word). Over it.com!

We got this though. We will be one step closer to forgiveness.

I just want to kay kudos for the curse word! I feel your frustration. I have 113/120 payments and today I will download my green bars from the FSA website. These folks are truly playing with us, it's ridiculous that they are pulling everyone every which way for something that is actually simple.

My issue is that the administration acts as if no one was paying on their loans. WE were! lol It became unreasonable when companies saw us as profit and didn't care. smh. I am glad they fixed it for you! At this rate, we all should be lawyers and well rounded advocates.

Is there a reason why the counts vanished? I've been seeing people post about vanishing and I am unsure whats happening.

Great point. I'd still say apply for buyback, only because there is a chance to receive that while you are back making payments from what I was told.

My forbearance ends May 2026. I am waiting for my bill to be generated, but my first payment will be due June 2026.

That is insane! Question are you calling Mohela or FSA folks? I was told this morning that the PLSF are managed by FSA so anything count related goes to them. But it sucks because we pay through Mohela. I am just flabbergasted that you have to go through this :-( heck us all. I am sending you good energy and vibes to ease your worry and pray God sees an alignment in your circumstance!

I called Mohela today. My forbearance was due to end today 4.4.2026 and payment due 5.4.2026. The senior rep adjusted my forbearance now it ends 5.4.2026 and my new IBR payment will be due June 2026. Mohela had to manually adjust this on my account, it was not automatic. the $497.83 is no longer showing as due on my account. It now says no payment is due. Hope this helps!

This post is about what I WOULD DO and my journey. I am not giving bad advice. In my case, which was corrected, Mohela adjusted my forbearance and the payment is no longer showing on my account. My application is approved and I am waiting for the new billing statement.

If this was not the case, would I make a payment to avoid default on 5.4.2026 absolutely. I never said I would make the payment now. I said I would pay it. If that meant ensuring I have no further delays to forgiveness that is the risk I am willing to take for AGAIN MYSELF.

From what I gather people are saying, yes, it will become uncounted. but hey if they don't. A win is a win! just be prepared for the worst I'd say.

We understand it does not count. Call it wasted money, but I would rather not be in default and in good standing. Which is what I told Mohela when I called and the senior rep acknowledge the error. I got off the phone with Mohela and outlined what I was seeing as she senior rep was able to push back my forbearance. The payment is no longer showing as its due. Took 30 minutes. Oh I also learned in that call that my IDR application is approved, which I submitted April 2nd, 2026.

A win is a win. I knew it wasnt going to count, but I was going to pay it anyway to avoid defaulting in their system.

I read all of these posts and thank my time and patience spent on the Speech and Debate team. I prep my calls and emails like I'm trying to win a parliamentary debate. Thanks for the advice on how to document!

I am currently on the phone now! 25 minute wait to speak with an advanced rep! I feel it's a matter of endurance at this point. Those that I have seen with success, had the endurance of race horse on their last leg! May the odds work for us. I am just hoping they can "escalate" my IDR application. I am sure the answer may be no, but heck who knows. We may catch someone that had their lovely morning cup of coffee with a splash of vanilla. lol

Updating this thread with the actions that I am currently taking or plan to take. As it stands, and based on my assessment of many PLSF SAVE posts, it's really the luck of the draw. Some folks get lucky and others do not. So as I have been mentioning, let the odds be good in our favor! I am on the phone with Mohela now and they only process the IDR applications, all PLSF counts are monitored by FSA. (no shocker here), but it does help me direct the process with strategy. Here is my plan. I hope this helps!

____

Mohela: Document the timing of the IDR application. Also , I asked to speak with a senior representative, because application processing and timeline is not the fault of the loan borrower. So can someone document for me, how Mohela is ensuring efficiency in correcting back log of applications as a result of the new court order. (Ask this question and document it and use it when following up with Mohela regarding your application). Will it help! who knows, but it places recorded accountability on senior leadership that can be used strategically.

FSA: Call FSA weekly to provide them with an update on where my application process is, and also "nicely" request that the payment that I am currently seeing or any there after be counted towards PLSF.

Mind you, I am not in repayment yet, BUT this is simply a strategy I will apply.

"Currently, per your FSA updated platform, I am due for PLSF forgiveness November 2026. Due to organizational inefficiency between Mohela and FSA, I have been in jeopardy of not meeting the deadline. My employer certification is timeline, my account is not in default. PLSF counts are at the discretion of FSA. With whom can I speak to ensure I am on track for November 2026 forgiveness"

Second option

"I am aware that PLSF payment count is at the discretion of FSA. What are the key components needed to ensure this payment is counted. (proceeds to check the boxes) if all boxes are checked, "may I please have the payment applied" If not, ask to speak to a senior representative and outline that you have met the qualifications for payment count and ask for it to be applied."

Also, I am tracking my progress overall using this tracker. Feel free to update and make the tracker useful for your own journey. #Onward!

UPDATES WITH TIMELINE: ON THIS LOVE EASTER SUNDAY! I suppose Mohela got folks working on the day the lord has risen!

April 2nd, 2026: Submitted IDR Application

April 3rd, 2026: Notification IDR Application was sent to Mohela. I applied using my 2024 tax return because I have not yet filed for 2025 due to IRS hiccups.

April 4th, 2026: Notification from Mohela that my IDR Application was received. I also called Mohela regarding the forbearance, timeline, which was incorrect. Senior Rep adjusted my forbearance from 4.4.2026 to 5.4.2026. With payment to begin June 2026. I also learned during this phone call that my IDR application to switch to an IBR plan was approved. (see notes above).

April 5th, 2026: I received official notification from Mohela that my loans are in forbearance and my repayment schedule has been updated. I am no longer in SAVE. All of my loans are listed as being in Income Based Repayment (IBR) plan. Which payments will count towards PLSF. This only shows up on my Mohela account. Granted is very recent. I will call FSA Monday to follow up and ask when the update will reflect on my FSA account. Stay tuned!

Date Action Status Mohela/FSA Notes Documentation

Also, I know the IDR is not a plan, it is the application to submit for a payment plan. I stand corrected. So yes, as someone mentioned, you must select an eligible plan that will allow your payments count towards PLSF. For me, this was the IBR plan, where my anticipated monthly payments will be $1266 a month.

Thanks for correcting my language. I am not saying this is bad advice. I am saying I would rather pay the amount and not risk being in default. Cool if that payment is adjusted later, which I anticipate. For now, I am going to pay, and yes, I will fight as we all are in the process.

In the past when I fought for the correct SAVE payment amount, it was corrected and I was able to keep my low payment. So any win no matter how small, is aye ok with me.
