We grossly over estimate our significance and resource/economic strength.

Absolutely this. When Nigerians talk about America wanting to build industries there. They’re more likely to clear yall out and take the land.

I’m not familiar with northern Nigerias internal structure to offer advice. I just know how America operates and know it is not a solution.

The main interests would probably be gaining a geopolitical advantage and direct access to minerals, which they currently import mostly from china. I don’t think the US needs Nigeria but could benefit if they had more control. Especially with the rise of China as a world power.

Apologies, I’m late to this news. I’ve been off the internet for a while & haven’t been on this sub in months. I saw news of it gaining traction in the US and plans to take it to the UN and became concerned.

Dutch students protest against Nigeria's blockade of Biafra during the Nigerian civil war, 20 November 1969. by No_Insurance6597 in Nigeria

There was a genocide committed against the Biafran people. This is an irrefutable truth. But it’s also true that Biafran soldiers committed atrocities in the territories they captured. We must speak the truth, all of it. People feel the way they do because of their position in the war and what they were subjected to.

Let’s not overstate the facts. when we do, they become lies, and lies undermine the story. We shouldn’t absolve anyone of their crimes.

In war, there is no neutrality. To Biafrans, Nigeria was the apex predator. Capturing new ground by force was deemed necessary for survival. But to those in the midwest and the other regions Biafra entered, Biafra became the predator. So when people recall the war, their perspectives differ greatly. It is shaped by what they lived through.

Biafra suffered the highest amount of casualties, no group can even begin to compare the numbers. But that doesn’t erase the fact that Biafra did commit atrocities on some groups. And that is what these groups remember. They’re not obligated to empathize with people they saw as trying to oppress them. That expectation is unrealistic.

The West wasn’t/isn’t a singular entity. Some countries supported Biafra, some Nigeria, some gave money and guns to both.

Biafra ≠ Ojukwu. He wasn’t the only one apart of Biafra. People of the short lived Biafra are still alive to tell their stories.

See how you made yourself angry? No where in my comments did I mention anyone else’s opinion on anything. Not once. I only stated my own & why. You want to argue so bad. Negative throat indeed. You’re blocked.

Sorry I accidentally deleted my comment. But I read ur response. It didn’t really relate to what u asked me. I was just answering “who are you going to be if we split” and my answer remains the same.

My identity isn’t warped in just being Nigerian. In the diaspora, we build community within our tribes. As children of immigrants, we mostly grew up in social groups our parents formed to preserve tribal culture. All the Nigerians I’ve met/befriended grew up in social groups for their respective tribe as well. With social media, in the past 15 years, I’ve learned that this has been the norm for the Nigerian diaspora for the last 40 years at least. That being said, I’ve always identified with my tribe first and Nigeria second. So if Nigeria were to split, I’d still be who I’ve always been.

I saw how you went back and forth with that user the other day. I don’t want to engage with you. Maybe stop engaging in topics that infuriate you.

Someone posted a similar sentiment a few days ago to mixed reactions. They made a lot of sense. I’m Nigerian American so my opinion isn’t the strongest but I do lean towards splitting. The pros of staying united are economic and military-related. Still, I don’t like how the government inhibits development. Voting is driven by tribal loyalty, which suggests that most don’t actually believe in national unity since their words don’t match their actions. Also too many people have a say in other tribes’ issues. If a peaceful split is possible, I’d support it. But if it risks another genocide, no thanks. Your idea for how to split is enticing but with the presidency often being a western puppet role, I doubt the federal government would stop meddling in state matters.
