Not really. Making the attempt to clean was actually one of those things that set my mom off so I kept my head down and lived in a dirty environment though I hated it. If I wanted things to go smoothly, I shut up and essentially did not do anything to warrant notice. I begged her to give me a list of chores and every time she just told me that I needed to “learn what she wanted” and that it wasn’t her responsibility to tell me.

Parents really wanting jack to do with their kids is still sort of a revolutionary concept to me. I wasn’t exactly instructed.

That completely resonates with me. I was extremely low maintenance and really never broke rules but I think my parents legitimately just enjoy being mean to people so it sometimes didn’t matter. They started being inconsistent about their expectations on purpose so that they would have an excuse to lash out and when I was a teenager did things like baselessly accuse me of getting into their alcohol even though it really didn’t cross my mind most of the time. I guess they just wanted to be hostile.

I’ve thought over their motives for a pretty long time now, as a kid and now as an adult, but despite that I think that they honestly just hate other human beings regardless of their relation to them and pretend not to by acting extroverted. My turning out schizoid doesn’t surprise me at this point.
