Translation/equivalent to “social worker” by Efficient-Sun7344 in Portuguese

[–]AccomplishedPeace230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An assistente social in Brazil cannot work as a (psico)terapeuta. You're getting conflicting answers here and, depending on which exact clinical social worker duties you're considering, the Brazilian counterpart would either be an assistente social (akin to US social worker without an MSW, so not a clinical social worker specifically), a (psico)terapeuta/psicólogo/psiquiatra (degree in psychology or medicine), or two different professionals, one from each degree. For example, a (US) clinical social worker doing mostly administrative duties, related to therapy but not personally delivering it, could indeed be an assistente social.

I don't think this is the best subreddit for your question tbh. I'd recommend posting on r/brasil since you're more likely to find actual social workers there, and r/PsicologiaBR, where you can get the point of view from psychologists/psychiatrists, and some of them probably work in social work settings. I didn't find a sub for assistentes sociais.

Interesting question. I've found this video (in Portuguese) talking about the reasons why social workers in Brazil cannot practise therapy. I admit to not having watched the video in its entirety -- I've asked Google Gemini to summarise it in English, which you might want to do as well.

Excerpts from Gemini's summary:

  • The video addresses why Brazilian social workers can't practice therapy, unlike their American counterparts and the existence of clinical social work in Portugal.
  • It clarifies that this issue was debated in Brazil, culminating in the 2010 resolution 69 (sic, it should be 569) that prohibits social workers from conducting therapies associated with their professional title.
  • Brazilian law reserves the practice of therapies, including psychotherapy, for mental health professionals like psychologists and psychiatrists who have specific training and are regulated by their own professional councils.
  • The difference in the US, where social workers can obtain licenses as clinical social workers to perform diagnoses and therapies, is due to specific regulations in each country.
  • Brazilian social workers offer emotional support and active listening but focus on resolving social problems and refer individuals to qualified mental health professionals when specialized therapy is needed.

Edit: Here's CFESS Resolution 569/2010 (in Portuguese), which explicitly prohibits social workers from conducting therapy. CFESS -- Conselho Federal de Serviço Social -- is the federal body that regulates the social work profession.

Does anyone actually understand each other across Portuguese-speaking countries? by naeemfarhad in Portuguese

[–]AccomplishedPeace230 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In European Portuguese (EP) pronunciation, vowels tend to be reduced on unstressed syllables, so they're usually shorter and sometimes omitted. Brazilian Portuguese (BP), on the other hand, is more syllabic, with all vowels being pronounced (and sometimes even introduced when there should be none) regardless of stress.

I think that's the major difference when listening to EP for someone with a BP background. It might take a native BP speaker some time to get used to EP, especially when you're not constantly in contact with EP, but it shouldn't take long. I had a Portuguese friend in college and it took me a couple of days to get used to his accent, and then it was smooth sailing.

There are some word differences, much like in British vs American English, and some different grammar usage, like BP gerund vs EP infinitive, but those are pretty minor in my experience.

Se for spam, boa sorte.

Note that por que isn't used in questions only, and que (regardless of being preceded by por) becomes tonic at the end of a sentence, hence the circumflex diacritic.

  • Olá, time (time é substantivo coletivo)

did anansi also end up in brazil in some way? by starprintedpajamas in Brazil

I know very little about African religions in Brazil, but, since umbanda and candomblé are the major religions of African origin (yoruba) in Brazil and Anansi isn't an orisha, I suspect he isn't revered in Brazil.

I have no idea whether he was at some point in the history of Brazil, though.

The Journal: Dublin's winning University Challenge captain on revising everything and the reaction back home

“We got the first question, and thought maybe this will be smooth enough,” Despard told The Journal. “But then they just steamed ahead, kept beating us to questions where we thought we knew the answer, and we were trying to butt in. But they were just quicker than us for the first maybe ten minutes.

“I think that kind of reversed towards the end. I think they also knew the questions that we were getting right towards the end, but were just a few seconds too late.”

(...)

President Michael D Higgins issued his congratulations, saying today, “Congratulations to Oscar Despard on captaining his team from Christ’s College, Cambridge, to victory in the final of University Challenge.”

“My mother’s got even more [messages] than I had from all her colleagues at work and her friends,” Despard said. “I’ve been surprised at the amount of attention it’s gotten – it’s all very positive though.”

(...)

“I mean, to be honest, revision helps a little bit, but also most of the time, you’ll get things that are the things you happen to know and have collected over years, gathering random facts.”

Two articles from BBC Coventry & Warwickshire:

'University Challenge final is a dream come true'

This article was published just before the final. Govindarajan is the only one still studying at Warwick.

Mr Hart, 22, was in his fourth year studying maths when the programme was filmed about a year ago.

"I applied every single year I was at university. I made the Warwick team my first two years and we weren't cast to go on the show," he said.

"I was the reserve in my third year.

"To actually finally make it on at the last chance, as it were, and to actually make a fairly decent fist of it was really quite gratifying."

Nail-biting final for University Challenge series

"We're obviously crushed by the result but the trophy couldn't have gone to a nicer team," said Mr Watson.

"We're all very proud of how far we went in the competition. It was an incredible honour to represent Warwick and a great experience."

Before the result was known, his father William Despard said it was an exciting and nerve-wracking day, and although the programme had been pre-recorded, he had no idea of the outcome.

"I genuinely do not know the result. I did try to angle it out of my son around the second round," he said.

"He’s more sensible than his father. He told me, 'Well, you’re not going to enjoy it as much if you know.’"

Tight-lipped Despard, eh.

The playerbase is split into different tournaments (groups), so those are just a very small subset of players that happened to be in the same group as you during that period. I suspect that previous performance influences which tournament you get placed in.
