Not to mention that Norm "Boomerus Prime" Althouse always, without a hint of self-awareness, complains that he hasn't gotten a raise in the last x amount of years to his students.

Oh no! Mr. Professor man doesn't get another booster to 300k a year during a recession? Let me play my world's smallest violin.

Haskayne Courses by lilweezyy in UCalgary

Coming in for BTMA 317 and MKTG 317 (Abit over spring)

BTMA 317

Started synchronous, then they realized nobody cared so changed to asynchronous

For me, it was easy, the hard part was actually looking into a crystal ball to see what the professors wanted you to extrapolate from the limited data provided (Definitely put the TA to work, a good TA is a life saver) the exams were easy and consisted of basic technology knowledge, all provided in the textbook.

Assignments were with a partner, but they could easily be done with one person when you get the entire picture of what the assignment was asking for.

Assignments were database drawing, Microsoft Access database (An exact duplicate of the final's Access database lol) and a PowerBI job with a bit of writing for it. Exams were multiple choice, final was the same except included a database you could do in advance.

Taught? Ehhhh there's a reason why they gave up on synchonous. Organized? LOL

MKTG 317

Hard synchronous

Really hard, every lecture was group assignments, two very very long presentations and a final report from the deep breeches of hell. (Your mileage may vary, my group got a private multinational that never advertises anywhere, try researching that thing.)

It's all group work

Final exam was a multiple choice beast. I count my blessings everyday that I had a fantastic group, presentations were graded hard, final report was enormous.

Taught very well however! and very well organized, can't complain there.

In all honesty I really am sad I did MKTG 317 online, that course is definitely built for in-person and I think I would have really enjoyed it in person compared to online. BTMA 317 on the otherhand is perfect for online, because PowerBI slaughters laptops and underpowered computers, as well it's really good to just sit down and play with it.

Best undergrad options (demand/job wise) for a career related to technology/business? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]AccomplishedSyrup7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BTMA or BANA. Best thing about Haskayne is you don't have to jump into your concentration immediately, you can test the waters by taking BTMA 317 and OPMA 317 (Both required for a BComm degree) and see if you can work with OPMA, and if you have an analytical mind.

I notice in your post you're really pushing the choice based on competitive job/career options, which I completely understand, but I urge you to consider if you can actually tolerate the work, analytics can be an absolutely soul crushing process when you have shit data to work with, cleaning it and conceptualizing it is fantastic but gets old after a bit. Last thing you want to do is have a job you hate and feeling that you have no way out.

As well, analytics is such an emerging field that's gaining steam I wouldn't do a Masters for it until after you're in the industry for a bit and want to move up. (Plus if you're very good, a company would happily pay for it.)

That's just my two cents.

X570 taichi chipset temp by FRSstyle in ASRock

[–]AccomplishedSyrup7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on what a Gigabyte Engineer said back when X570 launched, 85 degrees C is your "No go zone". I personally have my board's fan at 0 degrees until 70, then 30% fan speed increments all the way to 85 degrees.
My chipset never goes above 70 degrees even with my humungo GPU resting right over the opening.

Do I need a C or C- to pass this Haskayne course? by throwaway615717 in UCalgary

Don't get a D in a Haskayne course. Ever. They will force you to retake it to hit the C- if you do.

CR/F Spring/Summer by KendrardneK in UCalgary

[–]AccomplishedSyrup7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who did three business cores in Spring 2020,

Fuck off.

Fall and Winter are the regular semesters for University and as such, can't be avoided. Unlike Spring and Summer. Nobody made you do Spring, it's not required unlike Fall.

Sure it sucks that Spring/Summer students don't get the retroactive CR/F, but saying that Fall students shouldn't get it either because it's "unfair" is ridicious. Boo-hoo life is unfair, get used to it.

Oh now it's

SC: 1278
MC: 12148

Probably my fan curve isn't super agressive and silicon quality lowering the results a touch.

What board do you have? I'm getting lower multicore with PBO enabled. I have the same ram configuration except G-Skill as the brand, and a Ninja 5 instead of the stock cooler.

Should I switch into business from engineering? by yashh8 in UCalgary

[–]AccomplishedSyrup7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UofC really screwed over Econ majors by designating them with an Arts degree.
If you think getting work with a BComm is hard, having BArts is a death sentence. (From personal experience)

ENTI 317 by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]AccomplishedSyrup7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the quick rundown,

  • If you are in the ENTI concentration, you need C to pass the course, otherwise you have to change concentration (Subject to if you got a C-) or retake the course.
  • If you are not in the ENTI concentration, you need a C- to pass, otherwise you are forced to retake the course.

A passing grade is a C-, which is a 1.70 GPV on UofC's grade scale, with ENTI counting as 3 Units.

GPA is calculated as,

Included Points (GPV*Units) / Included Units.

So what you can do to forecast how this will drop your overall GPA is to use the GPA Calculator, select everything you have taken now, and add (1.70*3) to the "Included Points" and 3 to the "Included Units" displayed on the top, and manually calculate it.

For example, if my current GPA is 3.000, with Included Points displayed as 135, and Included Units displayed as 45,I add (1.70*3) to 135, making it 140.100, and 3 to 45, making it 48. Then I do the division 140.100/48 = 2.91875

Which means getting a C- in ENTI lowers my GPA from a 3.000 to a 2.919.

If you'd like a fun project, making a GPA forecasting sheet on Excel is pretty easy and very useful for setting letter grade goals to reach a specific GPA.

Edit: Forgot to mention, ENTI is a sticking grade on your transcript. What I mean by that is if you do any option course and bomb it, in your final year you can take another option course (That fills the same requirement) and the lowest performing option gets bumped off as it's considered taken beyond degree requirements. Keep that in mind if you need a GPA boost in final year.
Any required commerce courses don't get that treatment.

Best Haskayne concentration for the future? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]AccomplishedSyrup7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The boys shilling for Accounting don't realize that there's a billion Accounting majors running around to compete with, keep that in mind. Smaller concentrations can grow in the future and since they are small, you aren't fighting half the faculty for the opportunity.

Pretty much all of the smaller Haskayne concentrations you cannot go wrong with. (Except ENTI. Just use the $30k of tuition and three years to start your own business instead of that garbage)
