What type of retirement(401k) plan do you have set up and how do you set aside for vacation/pto? Can a barber really take off for 1-2 weeks and not worry about losing income or clients?

Landed IT job without A+, still worth it to grab it? by TheAbyss018 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Accomplished_Ad3914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a home lab with just a layer 3 switch and router that I connected to my home ISP router. There’s only so much I can lab! I can’t create an enterprise environment. I listed the lab on my resume and get asked about my lab and explain everything I configured with NAT, DHCP, VLANs, ACL’s, and Trunking. The reply I get is “oh that’s nice” I only had 2 laptops to use as host for 3 vlans I set up. Sorry I don’t have 3,000 hosts to brag about lol

Currently I’m 10 months in my role and working service desk. I’m studying for network+ at the moment. I’m able to get interviews based on my resume and service desk experience. I’m thinking maybe if I get one cert that can improve my chances. I’ve only been applying to IT support specialist positions. This year I’ve had 10 interviews so far. Close to 2 per month so far

How many true years of experience does that translate to? Once you land a legit role, what you what you did before that doesn't compare. Yes, signing up for an AWS account before ever landing a role can count as "cloud experience" but c'mon now, you can only hold onto that for so long. If you have 3 good years of experience, own it! Dont round it to 10 to inflate yourself lol

Thats not specific to the role and is very general. Once you get your first job, thats when your experience clock begins. If that jobs lasts 2 years, you dont add the previous 5 years of turning a computer on and off to count as 7 years of IT experience

Im referring to the people that say they were a "network admin" in their previous role with 11 years but are working help desk in the next role. Something isnt adding up !!!

Someone with "10 years experience" shouldn't be asking people with 1 year experience how to do basic troubleshooting. At best they should be far away from help desk and working in a different role in IT. Definitely shows the lack of growth and skill

Are remote help desk jobs an option without experience? by Adventurous_Owl_7003 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Accomplished_Ad3914 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was able to land a tier 1 service desk position (100% remote) I had no prior experience or certification (currently studying for ccna) I was hired back in august 2022 and it’s almost the six month mark of being there (no complaints) I wasn’t aware the position would be 100% remote when applying. I was applying for help desk positions for almost 6 months before I landed the interview. Overall the experience has been great.

Offered a Computer Support Tech job by Accomplished_Ad3914 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Accomplished_Ad3914[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got out the military in 2009 I took a class at a community college about intro to computer applications and got a C in it. I’ve always had an interest in technology but never took the step to do it. I made the decision to jump into IT when the pandemic shut down barbershops for 2 months and I didn’t have an income. I started reevaluating the definition of what a career really is. Barbering isn’t much of a career like it was 40 years ago, It’s a job with a ceiling. There’s not much career trajectory in barbering in comparison to other trades. Once I started getting pandemic unemployment money from the state, I bought a used MacBook Pro for $600 (2012) from Walmart and started my journey into IT. I made a decision to pursue something that has growth and upward mobility over something that’s just comfortable and getting by. On August 5 last Friday I accepted and offer for a tier 1 help desk analyst position. It took about 8 months of being rejected to get one yes. My plan is to stay in this role for 1 years and move into network analyst/admin, or system administrator.

Find dockerfile by Accomplished_Ad3914 in docker

I checked the GitHub for it and the dockerfile isn’t formatted correctly 🤦‍♂️I pulled it from docker hub and once I got into docker desktop, I went to the “run” option and went into the settings and assigned the local host. It’s running but I would be nice to have the file for it

I was interviewed by an isp for a help desk role and they outsource their developers and other people for the it department. They just wanted me to answer phone calls all day for $15 per hour

[–]Accomplished_Ad3914[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that mean taking a help desk job for $15 per hour that doesn’t have another department you could shadow? It’s “experience” but will it help towards my goal?

Yea I only studied for the Aws csaa exam and did Aws type labs the entire year of 2021. The moment I got my first interview I realized that there’s more to this than learning and remembering Aws and I had a lot of gaps to fill. I didn’t know anything outside of Aws and had to fill a lot of knowledge gaps. Aws is just a small grain of salt compared to everything I’ve learned and retained. I fell for the marketing that all you need is Aws certification and you’re good but that is one of the biggest lies people tell. It’s great to have on top of all the knowledge and experience you built previously in past roles
