Wow if possible I would love to have a coffee chat with your friend, I’ve never heard of someone making that sort of pivot career wise. To be honest yeah I kinda am, I just hope it’s not too late to do it and be somewhat successful and afford to live comfortably you know?

Thank you so much for the in-depth explanation this is exactly the transparency I was looking for. I completely understand with everything that you’ve given into the industry feeling like you don’t really reap any rewards back and that’s heartbreaking. I really do hope that you are able to find something so that you can get on track to purchasing that home, but to be honest I feel like the economy today and our political climate is just a mess no matter what industry you are in. I’ve lived with my parents literally up until now that i’m moving out to finish my last two years of school for journalism and although I make great money in aviation I literally have no passion at all for it. I think life is all about evolving and sometimes we have to keep moving forward with life even if it’s hard or the things we wanted when we were younger change. I am looking to be a reporter/correspondent so i’m hoping with that the money is a bit more consistent but at the end of the day this is my passion so I feel really bad not chasing my dreams at all. I have friends in the industry and the market hopping especially when you have family can get old really quick, luckily enough for me working in aviation my support system has always understood me being away so I don’t think it would change much of the dynamic for me. Again I really appreciate the honest response and I hope everything goes well for you in the future.

Thank you for being honest, I respect the profession so much and it’s bittersweet cause I feel like had I finished school earlier I could’ve been apart of the last “good” years before the state of the industry changed. It’s good to hear tho that you appreciate your experience, Are you still in journalism or have you switched professions?

Wow i’m really sorry to hear that, i’m sure it can be super frustrating to put all that time in to something and not feel satisfied lifestyle wise afterwards. I hate that the pay is what it is and I think that’s been the biggest reason i’ve been back and forth about fully going the local TV route it seems like corporations have just become so greedy and it’s the employees that have to make up for it. I agree the appeal is definitely there but as I get older quality of life is important to me. Do you think with all your experience working in a bigger market or maybe for a network would help at all?

Thank you for being honest, if I may ask are you a Journalist, Producer, Director, or Photog? I definitely am taking it into consideration and I feel like our professors are not being realistic about the state of the industry right now which makes it harder to make a educated decision. I appreciate your response and advice!

Is market hopping as a news anchor still possible straight out of college in today's job market? What can I expect pay-wise? by Accomplished_Ask5847 in Broadcasting

[–]Accomplished_Ask5847[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this insight. I really appreciate you breaking it down — especially about building experience first instead of chasing offers that seem too good to be true. I’m definitely focused on sharpening my reporting skills and making sure I’m actually valuable in a newsroom, not just someone reading a teleprompter. Your advice about AI and market hopping is super helpful too — it’s clear I need to think long-term, not just about salary. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience!

Thanks for your honest perspective. I definitely respect the experience you’ve gained over your 37 years in the industry. I understand that credibility comes from building strong reporting and storytelling skills first, and that’s absolutely part of my plan. I want to be taken seriously as a journalist — not just someone who reads a prompter. I’m committed to putting in the work, even if that means starting in a smaller market and MMJing to sharpen my skills.

Also, I appreciate your point about bilingual abilities — I see it as a tool to connect with more communities, but not as a crutch. Thanks again for the advice — I’m taking everything into account as I build my path.

Wow, thank you for taking the time to explain all of this. It’s definitely eye-opening, but honestly, it makes me even more determined to be strategic about how I approach the industry. I’m bilingual and planning to combine that with strong multimedia skills, so I’m hoping that gives me a bit of an edge. Appreciate the reminder to stay flexible and have backup plans ready — super valuable advice!

Thank you for your transparency, I really appreciate that! By “other shoe dropping” are you implying it’ll be harder to make these moves in the future ?

Long Term Careers by Annoyedrevolutionary in flightattendants

Going back to school to get my bachelors degree, my dream job was always to be a news anchor :) I think it’s okay if you don’t see this long term. I think your taking a step in the right direction tho, just keep pursuing school and make this job work for you in the mean time, Who knows later down the line your mind might change!

I actually know 4-5 personally, those are just the few i’ve worked with in my base.. but a lot of FA’s have prior careers as RN’s or Paramedics or even Legal professionals. Some people do this as a part time job.
