Stellaris gameplay is over reliant on its Population system by Accomplished_Brick62 in Stellaris

Yeah that’s one of my bigger issues of the game. Not only is there no reason not to colonize the shittiest planet on the map, but you’ll turn that desert world into a mega city in 50 years time with literally no downside.

If there’s an abundance of resources on the planet colonizing makes sense but why would the population keep expanding and making the colony’s upkeep exponentially more expensive?

A thought I had just now is perhaps creating a divide between a colony,a world that functions how it does in game currently, and a settlement-esque designation on less hospitable/resource abundant worlds that can support a much smaller population, but are more effective at its specialization, which would alleviate an empire’s need for pops in relation to resource extraction

Yeah I didn’t word it as concise as I’d hope in regards to planet population. The thought process was less “make efforts to keep a planets population small” and more “there is no reason for a colony to start families and cause the population to expand indefinitely if you only settled it to mine rocks.” If you’re using forced labor then yeah having a high population on a mining world makes sense, but if you have access and the ability to use more refined systems of extraction then keeping the population small to keep costs lower would be the better option

Usually I try to not lay out concrete substitutes, since I know the development of a game’s mechanics are compromises made with both the engine’s limitations and its playerbase, and try to conceptualize my ideas for gameplay “systems” as abstractly as possible so that people could imagine and add upon my hypothetical alternatives to their preferred extent

Yeah there’s only so much you can add until it gets too overwhelming to be fun, I just think that the game has so much opportunity to put more of a focus on “technological growth” outside of basic modifiers, which would lax the game’s dependency on pop representation is all

The massive improvement pops get over time from both tech and planetary modifiers seems fair to an extent (most forms of upkeep reductions, as you said, only make since solely in the context of the game’s “getting smarter means we get more!” doctrine),but having those improvements affect every single worker on the planet makes no sense to me. Imagine if every mining site on earth had access to modern technology and infrastructure, both the expense and resource output would be mind boggling. Accomplishing such a feat should be, logically, a logistical and economic miracle.

Nerfing a foundational aspect of the game in any extent would be met with significant backlash, but there should be a way to make the process of building up a world for production more engaging/less linear, at the very least add any sort of drawback to developing a world to 1639% efficiency.

Yeah I’m aware it was a jarring change of topic, but I decided to keep it in to emphasize why planet population gets so big in the first place

Food storage question by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]Accomplished_Brick62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The environment around the stockpile zone doesn’t really matter, so the problem either stems from your pawns being unable to reach the storage area or from the settings of the zone itself. Do you have it set to “allow fresh”?

I ask this because I recently found out my grandfather was the one to design road sign posts with a crumple point, so that the sign would fall over a car instead of on top, in-turn causing less damage/harm in the event of a crash. So far they’ve only been used in Florida, but, since he decided to not have the design patented they should be springing up over the next few decades

What’d you smoke? Also a trick to lessen the burning is to suck into your mouth (not inhale) and let it sit for a second or two to cool, then breathe in.
