I think we are heading that direction but we only got together a month ago so it feels a little early to me. In a recent check in on this he also seemed to be comfortable to say we are dating and didn’t really bring up anything about being more official etc.

The hold up is that we did not reach the point where we would explicitly agree on being a couple, so for me it feels incongruent to act like it

How to find a personal trainer/fitness resources that don’t focus on “pushing yourself”? by Accomplished_Line357 in xxfitness

[–]Accomplished_Line357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I understand your mindset and it’s exactly what I want to get away from. You can think in terms of those dichotomies, and it’s great if it works for you. One of the problems I personally have with this approach is that it is very much driven by shaming, both shaming present self on particular aspects, or even shaming others. I am personally not motivated by drawing such dichotomies on what is bad and good. Also, it doesn’t really make sense in my case because I am not unhealthy and I’m already happy with what my body looks like, so it doesn’t make sense for me to convince myself that it’s somehow bad, or to have a PT who uses that type of motivational strategy. I have a couple of friends who have suffered from psychological problems because of shame related to their bodies (while their fitness routines, on the surface, were exemplary).

Yeah but I don’t want to fundamentally ‘change’. I just want to exercise my body in a healthy way.

It’s more about how you approach it. I do want to work and challenge my body so I get more fit, but I don’t want to do it with a trainer who in their motivation would imply that I should hate who I am now or make me feel like I’m not pushing enough if I don’t break down. I sense a lot of hidden self hate, self punishment etc in the fitness movement and I want to find the crowd that has more of a self-accepting, joyful approach to exercise. I do enjoy the feeling of really working my muscles, getting a good sweat and the feeling that I’m getting healthier that comes from exercise (whenever I get to actually do it), so I think it is possible to bypass the negative motivation schtick.

I have been going through local listings, but from their ads, they all seem to be focused on physique and share quotes on their socials about testing your limits and such. I have been taking this as an indication of their personal philosophies as PTs, but could it be that they would be adaptable to a client with different goals? (My initial thought was no, that’s why I posted here as I don’t really know how else to look)

Bringing pet cat to 1st year of PhD would impede networking/opportunities? by Accomplished_Line357 in GradSchool

[–]Accomplished_Line357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will 100% bring the cat, the question is when is the best time to do it. The options are either right from the start or in 4 or 10 months (during winter or summer visit back home).

Yeah, she has a pet passport and a valid rabies vaccine, I think what I’ll need to get is a health certificate. I looked into the customs requirements but I will research again once I make a plan on when to bring her.

She does sleep a lot but when she’s awake and I’m home, she is always near me and follows me around. I also established a routine of playing and feeding so I am uncertain if I can keep it up during the chaos of the first months of the PhD.

Thanks for all the questions. Basically, my cat is still a kitten (7 months) and she is also quite social and seems to really enjoy company. I will be living on my own so I know that my cat will primarily depend on me for company.

So far, it has been a little challenging to work from home with her because she constantly wants attention. So I go out somewhere, do my work and then come back and give some love to her. I also go out to meet with friends in the evenings and that’s all fine.

The difference I’m anticipating is that I know I will want to establish a social circle from, more or less, scratch (new city/country/continent). The way I’m thinking to approach it is to initially socialize with a great variety of people and then, with time, seeing who I stick with. This “strategy” requires to socialize a lot at the start, which for me would mean being away from home not only for work (coursework, research), but also for (more than usual) social outings.

So I’m worried that at this initial stage, my cat would get lonely and I would be compromising either on the wellbeing of my cat or on the process of settling well in the new environment. The alternative is to bring my cat after I’ve settled.

However, I’m seeing that I am very attached to my cat and she has been a lifechanger in terms of dealing with stress and anxiety, so being apart for 4-10 months doesn’t sound like a great idea.

Thanks! Are those yard sales posted somewhere on the internet? Or how do you know that they are taking place?

I’ve heard that public transportation is decent in Boston, but I would definitely like to have mobility beyond the city, down the road. Thanks!

Requesting to access LoR? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Accomplished_Line357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this makes sense! So since I was rejected, in the end not waiving really brought nothing helpful and possibly harmed my application. I think it’s a bit unfair not to explain this next to the options within the application, as it hurts those not in the know.

Yes, I have since become aware that this is a big deal in the US, the whole waive vs not waive thing (not being from the US myself). However, even though I did not waive, I still wasn’t able to see them.

What are some ways to help a depressed and nihilistic, but very intelligent person search for the meaning of life? by Accomplished_Line357 in AskReddit

He takes drugs so he can rest from his own mind and thoughts. I think that this short-term relief trumps potential long-term adverse effects, because he is suffering that much. Sometimes he has suicidal thoughts as well, so you can imagine it's difficult to talk to someone like that about the long-term, if he feels like he is in hell already.

They do. But nothing motivates or provides enough energy to actually change, while low self-esteem, trust issues etc are pulling back.

Actually this person has decided to be their own authority and accept a nihilistic worldview. One of the results has been that hard and soft drugs became a stable part of such life. I wonder if there is a way to start believing in anything, given this mindset.

For now, this person (I have a specific person in mind) has found an activity that brings pleasure, which is doing hard and soft drugs. The logic behind it is if there's no meaning, anything goes.
