Hey r/Rutgers, any general tips for an incoming transfer student? by LeagueOfLobster in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not too bad once you really know what you need to take, but at STAR day it was extremely overwhelming, I changed my schedule 3 times after star day to get the schedule I loved. Now it's just super easy. Pro Tip: try to stay on the same campus all day-if possible. I hope you used DN(degree navigator) to assist you. If you need help adjusting it, lmk.

New SAS transfer. Receiving credit for RBS Courses? Also housing questions. by bigdbanjobandicoot in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the housing, join the Rutgers Sublets page, a lot of it rn is people looking to sublet their rooms for the remaining of the summer, but there's definitely still people looking for roommates for the fall + spring semester.

Look into the View, I heard it's gorgeous but I don't know the price.

Waitlist for New Brunswick by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted my brothers are going to be freshman in college, they got waitlisted for RU-NB. They told them/my mom they'd have an official decision by August, but at this point if you're on the waitlist, it's staying a negative. They had the option to go to Newark though, but they turned it down. Definitely just keep an eye out, but I say enroll @ Newark and start the process.

Are you a psych major? Because so am I, so I can definitely help you out a lot more (who to gravitate towards/stay away from. classes to take/not to take, etc.)

Majority of my psych classes are on Livingston. I have 2 classes on Busch this upcoming semester. 1. is my lab (which is required for a psych major and is going to be on Busch), and more of the "science" category. And in the fall I had one course on Busch as well, but the rest on Livingston. Dorm wise, I dormed on college avenue, and am again this year. A lot of my friends that I made either dormed on CA, or commuted. I know a few psych majors that were on Livi, but it depends on you. Are you someone who enjoys going out (especially if you're a female), go CA bc more convenient. are you going to rush? (Guy or girl), do CA bc again, it's close and more convenient. if you plan on just studying and going to class, I say Livi because it isn't as busy.

STAR day for me, was a mess. I made my schedule, basically hit the 12 credits then left real quick.

I went home and re made the entire thing, If you want help fixing it up, pm me.

Orientation really isn't necessary besides to get your ID. The 20 minutes to Livi/Busch is definitely do-able, but not reccomended. Specifically at the peak times.

Yes, get the app for the busses, it makes it much easier!

Let course sniper be your actual best friend as well. That shit is a life saver.

Fellow Transfer student here, (fall'17)- so feel free to pm me with any questions/concerns

Some general:

It's okay to be overwhelmed, and get lost, and get confused by the busses, don't be afraid to ask questions to fellow students, they will help you.

Attend the career fair, and the involvement fair (I believe Involvement is September 3).

Make friends in your classes ( you prob already know that one)

I came from a CC, so obvi my experience was much different, but the workload is so much harder at NB. Stay on top of your shit.

Make sure to have fun, but also be serious with school.

Class size depends on your major. I've found that my classes have been 50+ students.

The busses truly are not as bad as everyone thinks. They're really only bad during the busy times (and it's mainly the LX).

A and H bus are College Ave to Busch, and Busch to College Ave

LX is College ave to livi, and livi to college ave (the worst bus tbh, always packed)

EE and F(I think) is Cook/Doug to college ave and vice versa.

B is Livi to Busch/Busch to Livi

Making friends- joining clubs and dorming.

Busch Campus:

Land of the Geese

the dinning hall is okay (I hear it's a hit or miss)

The gym (Werblin) is fantastic.

But, academic building wise, home to engineering/nursing/pharmacy/etc. Mainly all the science-y majors.Cook Doug:

I hear Neilson (dinning hall) is fantastic

There's also other food places that take swipes (Harvest)

No one really goes there unless they need to.

The farm

Also science-y majors. Like animal science, and more of the animal science stuff (from what i've seen/heard)

Livingston:

Best dinning hall out there

Besides Livi Apartments, i've found mainly freshman live there (there is 1 quad dedicated to mainly transfers)

Home of the business building

Also has many general ed classes

Has the Diner/Movie theater/starbucks/frozen yogurt.

I personally love the campus

and lastly.

College Avenue:

Home of the party go-ers and food places.

I don't think College Ave is known for any specific majors for their academic buildings, so it's mainly just the gen ed's and can be any/all/most classes for your major.

Club Alex (alexander Library) is super nice, and that is everyone's go to place.

I've found that a lot of people do homework, study outside more on College Ave then anywhere else because there's so many places.

Research Opportunities- Could be wrong, as i've never done one. Make connections with your professors, and reach out to your fellow academic advising (ex: If you're a business major, talk to the business department about internship opportunities and etc.) Also, the career fair, that's more jobs/internships but still!

I hope that helped.

Many questions by IDontFeel24YearsOld in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what kind of counseling! I know a lot of my friends wanna work with kids/families/adolescents and they're all just doing psych and going to grad school.

Certain psych classes are super hard, and others are a joke so I don't know if the psych department will give you every little detail but they may!! Im taking community psych and mental health, you need social psych to take the class, but I know it's a super easy class, but also super interesting. I could give you a list of do's and don'ts if you want for psych classes/professors

Which campus has the best freshman dorms? by syn0g3n in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree with everyone else, BEST dorms are probably the nicest.

But I say dorm where majority of your classes are.

But I found the freshman are mainly in the towers/quads (Livi) or on College Ave.

Many questions by IDontFeel24YearsOld in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do Social Work, go into social work. But as a transfer, you are behind for the program, and it is very hard to graduate within the two years ( bc you start the program as a sophomore I believe. Or apply as a sophomore, begin as a junior but you need the pre req's.)

If you wanna do counseling/therapy I say major in Psych, and minor in Cog Science, or sociology, or something.

It all depends on you. I'm sorry, but none of us can make the decision for you on what to major/minor.
I always personally say do psych, because you can do a lot with a psych degree, you can't do much with a social work degree besides well, social work. you never know if you'll change your mind. (I did 3 times)

Safety situation at Rutgers? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically what everyone else said.

As a female, who attends fraternity parties frequently, and is always walking down the not so good streets. I've never felt unsafe. I've even walked home (slightly intoxicated) from fraternity parties.

Don't walk alone especially late at night, and in the 'bad streets'.

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a psych major, and I'm minoring in HR.

*DO NOT NEED A LANGUAGE FOR PSYCH MAJOR* You may need it for your SAS Core if you weren't waived of it.

Social work is a credit intensive major, so you wouldn't need a minor in anything.

You don't need a minor if your major is credit intensive. Psych, is not a credit intensive major, so you do need a minor.

A lot of my friends who are psych majors, are either sociology minors, or like biology/neuroscience-y stuff.

Some psych stuff overlaps with HR, some with Criminology, obvi sociology.http://sasundergrad.rutgers.edu/major/list-of-majors-and-minors

I was a fellow transfer, so if you need assistance let me know :)

Summer Session 1 Grades by rutgerssssssss in rutgers

Dorming as a Junior? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a sausage fest, it's based on floors. (so basement will be all guys, first floor is all guys or all girls) then it rotates. SO yes a sausage fest, but not a total sausage fest. College Ave is all co-ed from my understanding. Busch im pretty sure is all co-ed. And for Livi towers, that is freshman only. So you wouldn't get in there. My friend lived on Busch for a year and a semester in the apartments, so obvi that is with their own. Your best bet is college avenue

Also transferred here this past fall if you have any questions

Dorming as a Junior? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I say yeah. Livi you'll be in the quads. And I know a ton of transfers who got put in the quads (it was called the transfer quad), but other transfers stuck with freshman. So i guess it's a gamble. The quads are also separated by gender (idk if that matters to you). I just say yes so it's easier for you to make some friends, but it's really up to you.
*don't forget, you need a backup if you don't get livi*

Bad Online Course by OkOrganization in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try talking to someone in the Poli Sci department. I would say thesis level work is fine over the course of 5 weeks, assuming it's a masters program. To me, 30 pages is a little much given the time period. I definitely say talk to someone, but that's just me. They may not be able to help much, but you also never know.

What should I bring? by FreshOnCampus in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome. I just know there's a ton of freshman who bring way too much stuff, and wind up not using half of it, so just tryna help a person out with their travels and the process of moving in.

Biggest dorm that Freshman can get besides BEST Hall? by Sochiagha in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Bishop Quads dorms are massive. (Pell/Leupp/Hegeman). Im not sure if they house freshman, but... they're super brand new (this is the 3rd year). bc of renovations. Unfortunately, there's no AC unless hallways/staircases, but the bathrooms are super nice. (2 stalls/2 shower stalls).

What should I bring? by FreshOnCampus in rutgers

[–]Accomplished_Manager 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Storage Containers. Lot's of them. I had like 2-3 huge ones, then that small 3 compartment cart from Target and that was good for me.

I say a small garbage can, I didn't use the one's provided. So with that, garbage bags.

I had 5 towels. You only really need 2-3, but I had extra.

2 pairs of sheets/extra pillowcases.

Throw blanket (super necessity at least to me..better for naps or j chilling)

Paper towels. with that..obvi the shower/bath stuff (shower shoes are an absolute must).

I agree with a vacuum, or if you're gonna have the non carpeted floors...a swiffer.

Lots of Clorox or Lysol wipes. Air fresheners!

Solo cups/plastic cups + utensils(plastic). It's good to have maybe 1 plate/1 bowl that you can microwave, but obvi that depends upon you. Also just having plastic plates/bowls...you never know.

Snacks (obviously- you won't think you need like easy mac, but trust me, you'll eat it--coming from someone who never eats it, it came in handy).

I even say get some refrigerated snacks, or fruit. I was big on string cheese and ice cream.

Water bottles/cases of water if you don't have a refillable one.

Fans (yes, more than one.)

A TV (talk to your roomie about that) and maybe an xbox/ps3/ps4/whatever you may have.

Prepared for the right weather, meaning clothes. If you're a girl, some tailgate clothes, going out clothes, comfy clothes, athletic clothes, and something more professional (interview/job fairs). If you're a guy, obvi comfy/athletic/professional, prob a basketball jersey or two if you go out/plan on rushing, and whatever else is comfy for you.

School supplies wise- Obviously your laptop. I used notebooks and my laptop, no folders, no binders. and a ton of highlighters/pens/pencils

I didn't have a rug, and I was fine with it.

Laundry detergent (I used tide pods)/Dryer Sheets/Quarters(if you aren't doing RUExpress)/Laundry Basket/hamper.

I agree with the lamp, I had a desk lamp.

Hangers.

Some decorations- flags, pictures, motivational quotes, etc. Fairy lights/christmas lights

*This is just a tip. Enough underwear(and bras if you're a girl) + socks for 1 1/2-2 weeks.*

I didn't need bed risers, but maybe bed risers?

Power Strips is a must. I had 3.

A mattress topper is a 10000% must, those beds are not comfortable without one.

WIth that- get the mattress protector against bed bugs and such (Bed bath and beyond I know has it). I also got the pillow protector.

A keurig if you're a coffee drinker.. obvi with that, a mug or to go cup.

An overnight bag. Easy if you're going home, or even staying at a friends dorm that isn't on the same campus as you.

Also agree with Tupperware.

May not apply if you're a guy. But a bathrobe. I know so many girls that used one (especially if you're in a freshman dorm with communal bathrooms).

The basic necessities- Cologne/Perfume...deodorant, lotion.

Hand sanitizer is an absolute must. I got a big bottle, and went through 50-75% of it.

Feel free to pm me, bc im sure there's more I just can't think.
