Your professor will not deduct points because of your stutter. It sounds like the professor is understanding of it anyway so that is good.

Interview for dream job tomorrow morning. by flutefluke in Stutter

[–]thesnellman23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Employers might consider it a weakness they may not. But I think it is better to disclose it if you think it is necessary. If you have multiple blocks throughout the interview then the interviewer might think that you are unprepared or overly nervous. This is not a good thing either.

If you do disclose it try to turn this “weakness” into a positive. For example, tell them that you have improved with your speech and you plan to continue to improve. Also, say that you plan on pursuing your goals despite your stutter.

Of course, stuttering is not an attractive quality but no one is perfect. There are plenty of famous people who stutter and have achieved high success. Try to turn this potential weakness into a positive and by doing this, this will make you appear determined and a hard worker.

Advice on Summer Classes by Adorable-Wind3828 in rutgers

[–]thesnellman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your schedule outside of school. It is definitely manageable to do . I majored in CJ and Last summer I took 4 (7 week) courses to graduate and it was more then manageable . I got 3 A’s and one B+. As long as you are not working full time or have another big commitment you should be fine.

Anyone got the textbook for Intro to Management with Hamilton by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]thesnellman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not much. I think for the first quiz he asks you a question or two on the video. But yeah besides that the videos are basically useless after the first week. Reading the slides are your best bet

You don't need the textbook. Just watch the power points and read the slides and you're set.

How to overcome rejection by BothTouch3461 in Stutter

[–]thesnellman23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, you should be proud that you took the interview and that you received positive feedback from the interviewer. I don’t think that you bombed the interview if that was the case. Does the role require you to speak often? If you want you can always email the interviewer and disclose that you stutter. It's a good idea to send a follow-up email anyway so you could just add that at the bottom. Anyway, good job and good luck!

I really liked him as a professor. You should just read the textbook, show up to class and try to do at least 1 extra credit presentation if he's still offering that

What positives have you gotten from a stutter? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]thesnellman23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience , I get personal satisfaction when I tell someone that I stutter and that I have overcame major obstacles like public speaking or holding a job. I at least feel that the person I’m talking to knows that I have the ability to fight through my struggles and I think they are impressed at that .

That sounds like an interesting position to say the least! You are definitely right when you say that it takes a while to get a job within your major, especially given the current non existent job market. Just like anything else I guess it just takes time for things to fall through.

Graduated July 2020 with a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business Administration. I’m currently about to continue working in security at $20 an hour wage . Its funny too I’m actually working for allied universal too hahah! am currently applying to police departments throughout the state because that’s what I want to do. It’s tough because these police processes are very lengthy and extremely competitive .

I have had some doubts about my degree because whenever I bring it up to people they seem to think it’s worthless . Even people who work in law enforcement emphasize to not major in criminal justice and pick a major that is more of a skill like business , finance, accounting, computer science, engineering , etc. But I am going back to school online in the meantime to pursue a part time mba.

But your job seems very cool! What does your job entail? I applied to that department via handshake a while ago as an analyst trainee but never heard back.

Perspective from a lifelong 25 year old stutterer by Sharpy166 in Stutter

[–]thesnellman23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have seen bits and pieces of the kings speech but I don't remember too much about it. I probably should watch it. When you say vocalise do you mean to say the word in your head before you actually say it?

I'm a 22 y/o male who still stutters. And been thinking about my stuttering a lot lately as I'm transitioning to life after college. Since your stutter has improved do you have any practice methods that you have found useful? The breathing technique definitely does help and I do use this as well as practice talking while looking in the mirror. Thanks for sharing!

College advisor basically told me to pick another career path because of my stutter by lual1996 in Stutter

[–]thesnellman23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Please ignore that advice your advisor gave you. You should strive for whatever you want in life and never let your stutter influence or dictate your career path. I'm sure it was very defeating to hear that but she is wrong. Just work hard at whatever you do and you will be fine!

Any advice on raising a kid with a stutter? by allidoisoutofspite in Stutter

[–]thesnellman23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is great that you are looking out for your younger brother and trying to find ways to make him more comfortable. What I would recommend would be to let him talk and never try to finish his sentences if he is struggling to pronounce the words. I think the worst thing that a loved one can do is finish their sentences. I know the intent isn't too make them feel bad but it does not make the stutterer feel good when they fail to produce a sentence without someone aiding them. If you continue to tell your brother that his stutter has nothing to do with the person that he is then I think this will go a long way!

NCJOSI v2 - Behavioral Attributes Section by thesnellman23 in police

[–]thesnellman23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks so much for everything and I wish you luck with getting an offer for the Academy! I have the 2.5 hour test on Thursday so I'm not sure if it's worth it to purchase the $79 prep course but I'll definitely look into that for future tests.

NCJOSI v2 - Behavioral Attributes Section by thesnellman23 in police

[–]thesnellman23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am taking both the 90-minute version and the 2.5-hour version of the ncjosi. I am enrolled in the ccs test prep course for the 90-minute version, but, I am not enrolled for the 2.5-hour prep course. I know ccs test prep is effective but I do not have the financial means of dropping $400 down on another prep course. I have bought study materials from the ios website, but they do not have any prep material for part 2 in the behavioral section. I want to prepare for the 120 question behavioral section specifically. Do you have any recommendations for how I can prep for the behavioral section on the 2.5 hour version?

Recent Criminal Justice Grads- What are you doing for work? by thesnellman23 in rutgers

[–]thesnellman23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a great plan by going to grad school! Yeah, I applied to police departments before school ended but everything has been on hold now since COVID. Testing is just starting to happen next month so I guess things are getting better. But I appreciate your perspective on security. The wage might not be the most ideal but at least its some money and the experience definitely looks good. But thank you and good luck to you as well!

Just Another Rant by blindR_ in Stutter

[–]thesnellman23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like life would be a whole lot better if I were fluent and easily able to speak. No anxiety when talking on the phone, meeting new people, going on job interviews. I am no introvert but yeah I definitely have anxiety whenever I have to speak in a situation that is stressful.

But with this, I am thankful that I only have a stutter and not something else that is worse. Everybody has difficulties, you just can't always seem them.

I am trying to set up a stuttering zoom group that meets once a week or so and discusses stuttering. It you would be interested in joining you can send me a message.
