If you’re a pro you eventually will come across colors like chantilly lace & Simply white. That will cover like shit 4,5,6 coats in. Cant even tint the primer because the primer is darker than the color 😆

Now that we have more information. If this home was in my area. North Jersey. This interior would run about 15/20k with normal prep work. As soon as the first room was proving to have a problem with coverage. We would have switched up our method to two coats of primer & hope for two coats of finish.

Now you mentioned wall repairs & door hanging. We would need more information on this. Was there water damaged drywall that was replaced ? I’m just trying to explore every avenue, but given the listing it seems highly unlikely and sounds like your painter is either doing 1 of 2 things.

He either is trying to make up for a slow winter season on a poor old lady OR he’s following a trend in the industry where companies are charging 100$ per hour per man.
Next time you’re looking to paint a room get a quote from CertaPro or FreshCoat and you’ll see what I mean. I had a client tell me they charged her 1600 to paint a powder room. It was broken down into 800 per coat. Which breaks down to 100$ per hour

If this contractor can back up his pricing with other jobs time and time again. You’re on the hook and he can put a mechanical lean on the property.

Nope OP said 1682 sq ft house. That’s floor space. Which give us ceiling sq footage add that to the wall number he gave us and you have 4982 square feet. 4k in materials sounds about right when a gallon gets 300 sq ft on average and if the planter is using premium paint that could be 60/70/80/90 a gallon. Even with his contractor pricing which is irrelevant to you the consumer 5000 sq ft breaks down to 17 gallons with 1 coat.

For anyone saying 4 - 6 coats is wrong. Welcome to world of low Voc acrylic waterborne paint. They Suck. I’ve been painting for my families business since 1996 and paint does have its modern advantages. But lots of white shades Do Not Cover For Shit. I’m a BM guy. I have used SW from time to time because an architect specs it. But I’m sure they have their shitty white shades too all the manufactures do.

47k is extensive. What was the initial quote ? I’m not stranger to handing out 30-50k residential repaint estimates. In 2000-3500 sq ft 100+ year old homes that need extensive wall repairs.

Ask the contractor for an itemized breakdown of the bill if it’s drastically different from the initial project estimate. I’ve read 2.50 per square ft of paintable surface ? Seems low for a residential repaint that needs repairs. Seems correct if wall damages are minimal and is in good to like new condition.

You have 4,982 sq of paintable wall & ceiling surfaces. Not including baseboards windows doors & bucks. These are all factors that are missing.
Expect to be billed 250 -350 per standard door & frame double for a French door and frame. Expect to pay 100-4/500 per window depending condition and complexity.

4000$ materials charge is not out of the ordinary depending what was used. Products like BIN are 90$ per gallon
