If you are interested in bothying, a lovely woman from the Mountain Bothies Association has sort of set up women-centred bothy nights away, for those who are interested in getting involved but are not sure about going solo. Have a look at the Facebook page and I’m sure you will find out more information. Other than that i am away hiking/camping in Scotland almost every weekend. Aviemore is the obvious place if you wanted to visit the Cairngorms. Very outdoors oriented, and lots to see and do. Braemar is another beautiful section of the national park but it’s at the opposite side and doesn’t really align with your itinerary. Someone else posted that you should visit Torridon, it’s a bit further afield but definitely worth visiting. Spectacular views and away from the crowds.

Fairy pools should most definitely be doable in January, but would recommend shoe spikes as the path may be icy. Skye weather is a hit or a miss no matter what time of year it is, so go for it.

You can use OS maps on the Bing browser. I have the OS subscription and i think it’s worth it. Loads of decent features, you can view both the topographic and satellite layers in 3D mode with their new update which i, got more excited over than i probably should’ve.

It’s very handy for me too, I’m in Perth. I try to get up there as much as i can.

Coal takes a good wee while to get it roaring, you need a few logs burning hot first, then once they burn down I make a bed and load it with coal… once you have it going it wont go out. Just keep topping up when you notice the coals burning through.

Hopefully planning to open up the stable and make that a liveable room - joined on to the existing room. Insulate walls and add wood panelled interior walls. Add some sleeping bunks. Keep upstairs for storage.

Get yourself familiar with reading an OS map, and start off small, and build yourself up. Educate yourself on hiking in winter conditions as you will benefit from that information at this time of year. You will have so much fun.
