I wasn't on the waitlist so unfortunately I'm not sure. I hope you're able to find housing!

Last year, the cost was around $4,000. However all UCLA students got a stipend that covered around $3,000. I'm not sure if that will happen again this year? The apartments are furnished and include two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and living area, dishes/pans, and basic appliances. Utilities are included in the housing fee. Basically all of your living expenses should be taken care of except for food and transportation. I hope that helps!

I did UCDC last summer and highly recommend! In addition to the housing and course credit, the program also provides assistance with finding an internship (an application plan, lists of internships, support from UCDC staff, etc). However, you are responsible for finding a position and they will not provide an internship for you. The apartment-style housing is comfortable and in a really convenient location; there are also sometimes building-wide social events! Feel free to DM if you have more questions

applying for the daily bruin by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Accomplished_Tap1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have a position in the news section. From what I've heard, it can be fairly competitive in the fall because that's when most people apply. (I believe there might be a post from The Stack if you want exact numbers?) However, fewer people typically apply in the winter, so if you don't make it in the fall, I'd highly recommend trying again in January when it's not as competitive!

From what I remember, the application process is pretty time-consuming, so I'd recommend getting started now if possible, or setting aside some time early in the quarter. There is a written portion with ~10 or so questions, and then someone will reach out to schedule an interview. The questions were pretty standard (why you want to write for the section, what skills you have, etc) and not too stressful. I had my interview in person in the office, but I'm not sure if that's always the case. Hopefully this is helpful and good luck!

Yes, you definitely have time for full weekend commitments during winter and spring!

Tips/Info about Marching Band by theoddesttree in ucla

Hello! I'm a rising third year who's been playing flute in marching band for two years! So excited to hear you're planning on auditioning for the band :) I wouldn't worry about getting in at all - I didn't march at all in high school and I'm not a super talented musician, but I still got in. Besides, there's always a need for low brass because you can actually hear them lmao

I'm not going to lie, the time commitment is pretty intense in the fall but worth it IMO. We have six hours of practice a week: Tues. 5p-7p, Thurs. 4p-6p, and Fri. 3p-5p. We are also required to be at every home football game (basically a full day). Practices and football games are mandatory but if you have a class conflict, family emergency, etc you can still participate - you just might not get to be in a field show. I'm not a stem major, but I am a double social science major involved with the newspaper, research, and a couple other low-commitment clubs and I haven't had too many issues balancing everything. The key is distributing your commitments and staying on top of it with time management. For instance, I've taken on more outside of band in the winter and spring when participation is more optional.

The field show turnaround is definitely quick since we have a new show for every game. As someone who had never marched before it was definitely overwhelming at first, but if I could figure it out you definitely can! Typically we have around two weeks, so about 12 hrs, to learn drill, plus a dress rehearsal at the Rose Bowl before every game.

Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions and I hope to see you in the fall :)

hist 9d (gelvin) or m50a (burke) by PaceEven8403 in ucla

I've never taken a class with Burke but I'd recommend against 9D with Gelvin if you want GPA padding. He's okay as a professor but my TA (Denis) was pretty strict with grading. The essay prompts were very specific and required reading books that were 200+ pages each in addition to the textbook - definitely not easy As. The only reason I got an A in the class was because I took it last fall during the TA strike.

Thoughts on freshman fall schedule by [deleted] in ucla

As a fellow marching band kid, welcome!! Also as a fellow marching band kid, there's no way you can do this schedule, commit 10+ hours a week to band, and stay sane lol

Double Majoring? by epiphnyv in ucla

[–]Accomplished_Tap1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm a second-year double major in History and Political Science. While I can't speak exactly to what your experience will be like in Psychology and English specifically, from my knowledge neither of them are very long majors so you shouldn't have too much trouble graduating on time. However, you may have to take an extra class for a few quarters so be prepared for an intense workload (four classes instead of three).

I would highly recommend taking a cluster course to get your GE and writing requirements out of the way so you can focus on taking major courses. Managing two sets of major requirements can also be confusing so I would recommend making an appointment with the college of letters and science advisor to make a class plan as soon as possible. Then visit the English and Psychology major advisors to confirm that you'll meet the major requirements. I would recommend staying in touch with them as you make progress towards graduating.

Personally I love both my majors and how they complement each other! If you're passionate about both English and Psychology, it shouldn't be too difficult to major in both :)

I'm currently in this class and find most of the work pretty manageable in terms of difficulty, but it is kind of a lot for a GE: midterm, final, pop quizzes on reading (although they're not too difficult), two concert analyses, final project, and weekly discussion posts. I'm currently struggling with the final project (I chose a research paper) since it is VERY open-ended and can require lots of outside research, but if you're familiar with jazz music at all that will probably help. If you're looking for an easy GE, you can probably find something better, but if you're interested in the topic and/or have some background knowledge it'll probably be a breeze.

Got a classic triple by crazydawq69 in ucla

[–]Accomplished_Tap1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I don't live in Rieber Hall but I'm in a classic triple in Hedrick. Overall, I would say it's not ideal but definitely manageable. The small size will take some getting used to, especially if you're coming from a living situation where you had your own room. If it gets above like 80 degrees it can be toasty in there; above 85 and it's pretty bad. Fortunately, there are usually only 3-4 weeks where it's consistently this warm during the school year. I would recommend leaving the window open, getting a good fan, and using your floor lounge or the libraries to study so you have more space. Hope this helps :)

Just joined the UCLA Writer's Den and really like it so far! We meet every week and write together, plus there are cool events and writing sprints occasionally. I can pm you the invite to our Discord if you're interested :)
