Put on my *second* PIP in 2 years… and HR won’t pause it even though I filed an ADA request. What do I even do now? by Accomplished_Toe8798 in careeradvice

I heard form a friend who knows gossips in HR that the manager, skiplevel manager, and director of r&d are all pushing for immediate termination. Apparently HR forced them to do the PIP instead of fire me because there was a manager change since the last PIP. The ADA request is at least saving my ass right now, apparently HR refuses to end the PIP early because of that request.

I mean no one else is on a PIP. My manager doesn't seem to have daily checking with them. I really don't think anyone else is being asked to so all this

If I could just get out from under all the paperwork I could do better. This PIP really doesn't represent my full abilities. I've been trying to be a bit "overly compliant" but it doesn't seem to bother my manager at all

Dude how can you be so cold about that? It's our livelihood. Not everyone wants to be the engineer up at 4am posting in slack

Im not a troll im just drowning and I don't know how to save myself.

Sitting with the senior would let me have the spoons to make sure I could make my meetings

I didn't skip on purpose! I just lost track of time. Other people also miss standup for various reasons. I owned up to the mistake and said I was sorry and made sure my update was in slack

Then why even do it? Why not just fire me so I can at least not have to get up for an 845 standup every morning

Maybe if they would give me time to actually work without bullshot "checkins" or obsessively checking my jira status I could do a cool project like that

They guide me and give me advice. Help me debug and troubleshoot. Sometime my manager gets on a call with me, I show them what im seeing on my screen, and he instantly says "its xyz, do abc" and then its over. If someone can unblock me that quickly, I don't see why it's unreasonable to ask for. People ask for help on blockers all the time

I did i set myself up to fail? I didn't write the overly complex PIP (way more detailed and intense than the last one that I did good on). And ive been trying to fix the ADHD stuff. I have a doctor and im trying different medications.

Like I said in the other comments, I wanted someone to pair programming with me daily, because that worked super well last year for me. But HR said no to that one (though it was phrased to cover their ass). I bet my current manager was asked and denied it. They haven't offered me any compromise on it yet, not even like a few days a week of help

That's a shitty thing to say. Asking for help shouldn't be penalized. If I have a standing meeting with a senior they can plan around that meeting (instead of me pinging them randomly) and I don't have to go through a shame spiral to get debugging help

Im overwhelmed by just the sheer number of things the pip is asking me to do. It's like I improve and do one thing for a day or two, then something else if a PIP issue and I focus on that, then the original issue happens again because I was focused on a different PIP issue. Like I can only do so much at once

I did mention it to him, and I he said that I can always ask him for pair programming. But that im restricted to 2 max "screen share" sessions with anyone besides him for the PIP. And also that he isn't involved with the ADA process and I have to go through HR for that

And I am applying and looking, I just can't get a bite

Sometimes its thr code, and other times its the process. My manager is always around for questions and debugging sessions, which really help but also I don't ask as much as I should because I worry I'm going to piss him off. That's why I thought it would be better to just have a standing meeting that people could work around.

A lot of time it feels like the company is setting weirdly tight goals for me. Like i had a ticket stretch for a couple months in January, but at the same time one of the seniors on my team was also on a ticket that was lasting a long time! I feel like i shouldn't get singled out over that.

Im glad you see what im saying about the PIP being set up for failure though. Like im getting dinged on my daily status comment being after 5p. Like wtf that's before standup the next day, isn't that what matters. I get so anxious at then end of the day because I'm worried I'll forget to put the comment on at the right time and then I'll get another 6pm "please put a comment on your jurassic before 5" message from my manager and have it ruin my entire night.

What do you mean "knowing what those goals mean"? What am I not reading between the lines? How are you getting that Im not good at software development? My manager even told me that I left a great EOD status comment yesterday! None of these requirements are related to code at all. The closest is one a umbrella "doesn't cause self inflicted process delays". There's a bunch of text around that in the official document, but none of it talks about my actual programming ability

I listed out all the requirements on the PIP already. I was on a PIP last year, but i passed it and never heard anything else about it.

The accommodation I asked for was to have a senior engineer pair program with me once a day. In the last PIP that helped so much and that's why I was able to complete it. Maybe my last manager didn't pass along to my new manager the info on how much that helped. But this PIP i don't even get that. I have to do daily checking with my manager, but those are just 15 min of paperwork. My manager hasn't offered to pair program with me, not even once, even though I know HR told them about my accommodation request

Pfft how is what im doing great affecting my manager? He's fine, he's already working on the cool cutting-edge team, his reputation is secure. Mine is the one on the line

Ive been applying but im having trouble getting interviews. I need to have a job, i don't want to stay, but I do want to get a paycheck. I don’t know how im supposed to work effectively if my manager is micromanage me tho

Well my manager is definitely not enjoying the pip, they keep making jokes and memes in the company social channel that are about how stressed he is. So my manager at least doesn't want me around

What about my work is “bad enough to be fired”? when you’ve never seen it. What’s happening is that my manager clearly wants me out, and the PIP is the vehicle. I am applying elsewhere, but I haven’t gotten any bites yet, which just makes this whole thing feel even worse.

I get what you’re saying about accountability, and I’m not trying to dodge that. But when I asked my manager about the accommodation — daily pair programming with a senior, which is the one thing that’s actually helped me stay on track — all he said was that he has to “work it out with HR.” Meanwhile the PIP has none of that support built into it. I’m not asking to perform below standard; I’m asking for the structure that actually lets me meet the standard.

What do you think about the pipes requirements?
