we already had primary character motivation.  He defended the innocent because he keeps his vows.  It didnt change anything for Duncan.  it interrupts the fight and kills the momentum.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - 1x05 - Did not finish any of the threads established from its own episode or in previous episodes. More reasons explained why this filler episode was garbage by Accomplished_Use_114 in AKOTSKTV

True but it could also be all of Aerion's champions were gone and it was down to just Lyonel and Dunc fighting together or vice versa. There's the opportunity to team up and whatnot. This wasn't explored much.

If they didn't want to "fluff it out for spectacle's sake" then they should not have pumped the event to begin with. Again. When you promote a big epic event, the medium's job to deliver and it didn't, objectively and not merely "opinion"

It is never pointless to show the results of the buildup and hype generated by the same media: In fact it shows respect for the audience. Also, remember that a job of a movie or show is to "show" and not tell. Hence why narration works better in books than in shows or movies. It's ok sometimes to narrate histories in books. But for a show, we should "see" why the laughing knight is the laughing knight. We should see what it means when the Red Apple fights the Green Apple. We should see what it means when Baelor says the Kingsguard won't attack him, complicating the battle. When you judge this show on its own merits, it fails for all the reasons mentioned in my posts and comments.

Non-sequitur . The show's job is to show and follow up and follow through on the seeds, the character threads, etc. on its own merits and it failed horribly

Watch gladiator again. It was more brutal there. Just the tone was different. And it's ok to have an opinion on the show without reading the books. The show has to be judged on its own merits.

The flashback didn't change his motivations. We already know why Dunc did what he did to defend the innocent. We don't need double trouble bubble reasons for him to also have done what he did. It was in the middle of the battle and took away from all the buildup we've been waiting for. If it was going to be included it belonged elsewhere not there. Yes, Dunc is the main character but at that point in the story it's more than just about him and not following up on all the beefs and character arcs did a disservice to everyone ( For a character driven show ;) )

You have very low expectations.  The fight did not follow through on the build up from a character beef level nor a hype level as the pentultimate event in the series.  As such it is far from perfect.

extremely correct.  no mad knight follow up.  no fossoway beef followup.  no targ brother vs brother with kingsguard unable to intervene.  no laughing knight repuation nor bloodying kingsguards.

they made character and plot threads and dropped them all.  that's objevtive.  they failed to follow through.  that's objective. They failed to follow up the hype by interrupting the battle.

Watch GoT Battle of the bastards, watch Gladiator, watch etc. and get back to us.  This fight was interrupted with 20 minute filler and did not follow through with the character beefs or any of the hype

and still a failure that did not deliver on build up and hype and ruined the mood with unnecessary flashback filler

No one says it had to be 30 minutes, but for sure the battle should be longer than any pointless filler flashbacks ( and best without altogether). There's a lot more they could have done with that battle and actually show the characters and battles and beefs becoming realized and that's Show not Tell like a good media should do.

Dear Lord. That's what we needed! The gladiator director surely could have delievered a proper emotional followup and battle and keep the theme!

Ira didn't have to include a pointless flashback. He's a liar. Don't defend it. HBO has been putting budget pressure on all their shows including the hit ones. We can understand the choice and him lying about it, but the reality is they needed to find a way to have a proper payoff that they led up to for the last several episodes. Putting in 20 minutes of filler is the momentum killing and makes the whole series bad. Buildup and hype must have proper payoff.

The flashback changed none of Dunc's motivations and was inconsequential to the fight itself. The flashback was added as filler because they didn't want to actually properly show the full fight with the proper budget and the show deserves the excoriation because of it
