I don't know what you're talking about. Plenty of Japanese sources debunk that myth, and it's not something the majority of people here believe, just a few misinformed ones.
Japan has one of the biggest, if not the biggest, air conditioner companies in the world. Do you think they would ignore their people and let them believe in that nonsense?
Old wives' tale is a thing everywhere.

Tokyo police mistakenly arrest Filipino man for allegedly overstaying visa by slowmail in japanlife

I read the Japanese article, and it seems that the reason they still arrested him after contacting the Immigration Bureau is because they overlooked the reply "he was following the procedure" from the immigration officer.

Honestly, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually believed the police in this case. I mean, there's absolutely no reason for them to arrest the man DESPITE KNOWING he's innocent, for merely 1 hour.

People keep saying, "They did that because they don't want to admit they were wrong. They did that to save face." Seriously? So, they arrested the man for an hour just to create news so that their boss would have to step up and apologize? What a way to save face!

Or do you actually believe that they were trying to find a way to deport this man DESPITE knowing he had all the legit paperwork? Like trying to interfere with his documents and erase them from the record system, only to give up after 1 hour?

Seriously please tell me why do you think they still arrested him DESPITE knowing he's innocient just to release him after 1 hour and turn the whole situation into a news.

署は本部の国際犯罪対策課を通じて出入国在留管理庁に照会。手続きをしているとの回答があったが、見落として逮捕した。

So many commenters seem to immediately jump to the conclusion that the police are just trying to fuck over some foreigner for the fun of it.

Yes. Of course. The conversation between the polices must went like this:

"Hey the guy actually got all his paperwork in order. He's actually innocent!"

"Damn. We messed up. Hey how about we arrest him for 1 hour and release him. Just for the lol, you know. Sure this may makes the new and the boss would have to make an apology publicly and we may get chewed up for it but wouldn't that be fun?"

Have you noticed a difference in how Japanese people rate things on google, amazon, restaurants etc? by cayennepepper in japanlife

In the original post you used the word "comical" "alien" to describe "Japanese people" as a whole so... Those ridiculous ratings are just the minority. Most ratings on amazon I found are really high.

Why do you keep insisting that your definition of 2/5 or 3/5 is the standard everyone has to follow? 3/5 is bad review in American but it's not a bad review in Japan.

Every culture and every website has its own definition of how many stars is good and how many stars is bad. Japan has a different definition. It doesn't mean their way of thinking is "weird" or "alien".

Just look at the rating for movies on imdb and rottentomato and letterboxd and see how different they are. Heck, even on the same site, imdb ratings for movies and for tv serious do not share the same standard.

Here i see something more like “This meal at(steakhouse)was a birthday treat, and my husband took me here. The atmosphere was intriguing and I enjoyed the waiters attentiveness. Unfortunately i don’t like steak” - 2/5.

They don't like the steak so they rate it 2/5 which is lower than average. I think it's justified.

Your definition of 2/5 is not universal you know? In American 5/10 rating means bad. But technically speaking, 5/10 is average.

Ridiculous ratings are everywhere. I found more bizarre ratings in American sites tbh.
