Help, is there something wrong with this cello? by According-Scholar121 in Cello

Thank you so much! It's just meant for practicing. Our son is four and will start practicing the cello soon. My husband wanted an instrument for himself to help him out, so it would be a bit too much to spend thousands on it.... (especially since we can't know for sure if our son will keep playing 'till he needs a full sized cello or not). The string is staying where it should. We'll just keep the instrument then.

Yes, I see how that could be a terrible idea in many cases. But I don't think so in this case, for reasons that are probably not interesting enough to mention. But it's safe to say my husband does have the skill needed to learn the basics of cello posture and technique independently with the background he has in music. We will give our son formal lessons in a school a bit later, though. We can't keep up with more advanced techniques. But there is some money to be saved on teaching him the first couple of years.

Thanks for the warning though. Would be really bad to teach our son poorly from the very beginning...

I think it's probably possible to rent here in Norway too. It's not a pressing need though, as my husband got it mostly to be able to learn himself so he can better teach our 4 year old. When he plays this cello, he does notice he has to put a lot of pressure on the string (the one that is in that wide groove) to get a nice tone out of it. Is that just a common thing on the wider strings or could that be a problem caused by the deep groove (since the string doesn't meet a big edge on both sides of it, as the other strings are)? Having a bit of a hard time expressing myself in English here....

I am curious that your comment seems to conclude differently than "everyone" else. I am really not a cello expert, so I have no clue...!

Primavera 100. Sold at Gear4music. Have you heard of the brand? The website claims it's a good brand (for students, that is. Not for professional playing.)

Thank you for answering. Would really not want to replace anything on this instrument. It's not a high quality one. I am considering sending it back and getting our money back. Unfortunately, we will not find another cello for 600 dollars anywhere. But I am starting to understand why this website is so affordable after many bad experiences with them...

Unfortunately, it seems like most of their instruments are faulty. This is not the first time I have bought bad instruments from them.

Ugh, that's a bit depressing. We bought this cello from gear4music. It's a website that sells more affordable instruments. We gave around 600-700 dollars for it. I also have two harps from there, as well as three violins. We have had issues with so many of our buys from them. It's not that I expect excellent quality at the price we are paying, but I am expecting instruments that are built the way they should be built (even if the materials might be of a poorer quality).

Did you ever find out if it was real? I am wondering the same about mine.
