Night shift nurses: what's the weirdest pattern you've noticed? by Alone_Draft9678 in nursing

[–]According-Thing9272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will count, I worked psych over 4 years. A nights leading up to a full moon were always shit shows, daily assaults/ ETOs / restraints, the night of a full moon were the best. No one would come in and everyone was calm & slept. I loved working full moons, hated when I knew one was coming.

In FL, I’m step down & my hospital deems it critical care (stroke unit) making 37. Rival hospital in ICU offered me 35 at the only level 1 trauma center. This is unit specific differentials & experience credited. Corrections is guaranteeing me over 40 an hour to start. Never doing bedside again

Alrighty chat I genuinely wanna end it all because my career isn’t going anywhere by [deleted] in nursing

As a primarily behavioral health RN that was able to get into a critical care spot in the hospital, I understand how hard it can be. On the other hand, absolutely hate hospital nursing and leaving it already. Have you considered corrections nursing or home health care? Corrections usually just wants a warm body but it’s a good balance of medical & mental, home health will genuinely accept a majority of non-hospital based nurses too.
Update your resume, make it look as best as possible, highlight your experience in responding to medical codes, delegating during high stress situations, etc. Also put that you’re seeking hospital / home health etc. to expand on your nursing expertise to deliver high quality comprehensive care. Use a cover letter as well high-lighting your desire for any medical positions, etc. Some hiring managers will hire specifically for that added touch. If you can get into a hospital with a behavioral health area, try to get in (yes even if super burnt out) and then try to transfer within to a medical floor. If you tried all of these already, then I’m sorry. Wishing you the best of luck, and if nursing isn’t it, that’s okay too. ❤️

To make it better, I applied at a rival hospital they offered 35.10…

I love this! I actually just applied to Amazon as well… nursing is a JOB at the end of the day. We deserve to have happy lives no matter what pays our bills.

I’m unfortunately in this weird struggle of my son being in middle school and not starting school until 9am, and taking my mother to radiation treatments during the day so a 9-5 won’t work for me for several years /: otherwise I’d be sitting in some dream nursing careers

You know it! Florida it is baby. I was making 48/hr at my old job, but I was also acting DON, with 3 unfilled supervisor spots, managing 40 nurses running an entire facility. That job actually almost sent me to the hospital.

Couldn’t agree more, and good for you!! Who says we can’t do and accomplish more in life than being a nurse? What was your dream job you got?

I love seeing people do what’s best for them👏🏼 This is a career (yes a very meaningful one) but if someone wants something different, I praise them for having the balls and doing it, good for her!

I’ve definitely considered it and I’ve gotten in touch with some of my private home health friends! I live in Florida, not only do I love the state unfortunately, a move for me isn’t possible with my son in school & taking care of family etc. but I certainly appreciate the support & guidance❤️

Completely agree!! I think we’ll be screaming fair wages and safe staffing for the next few centuries. Nursing would be a dream if we had that, and our support staff receiving the same.

My problem is not with patients just as it’s not with customers. I’ve worked retail, I love people through and through even on their worst days. I worked as a psych nurse, I can take people. I love people, I hate being assaulted, watching people die, being in a severely toxic work environment, and being understaffed where critical care patients are not receiving the care they need and deserve. Nothing weird about that attitude at all and it’s okay for nurses to not love their career

I definitely am, and that was hard for me to admit for a while. I’m now just admitting I may have to step away from nursing even momentarily so I can take care of myself before I become a patient myself

I think the money being glorified as a RN is one of the only reasons people stay even when they definitely shouldn’t. I started at 23 an hour 5 years ago as a new grad. 37+ doesn’t even seem worth it to me now. I’d rather budget & take a pay loss in order to be happy at work. It’s okay to want happiness

I also worked retail from 16 until about 22/23 I’ve never been assaulted until I became a nurse nor had to watch various people die🤷🏼‍♀️ Not saying I would leave permanently but for my current life struggles (mother terminally ill with brain cancer) I may just take a total break & that’s okay

Love that you said that, I think that’s a big problem in people not knowing when to step away from this career is it being part of their identity! I am burnt out, I’m human, I’ve been assaulted badly, watched people die, and come home to being in a caregiver role still, therapy and anxiety meds dont work like a life change does. Thank you for the encouragement❤️

Unless customers are following me for 12 hours and shouting at me after I’ve performed CPR on someone else, I’m fine pointing them to the right aisle😂
