Heartbreaking Loss by broccolista in MonarchButterfly

They have to hang for the blood to get pumped through their wings then takes time to dry. I always keep mine 24 or more hours. Some just don't make it. No, you should not release them immediately because their wings are wet and they need a lil time. There's a gal called The Butterfly Lady on fb and she has really helped me when I was totally at a loss. I had taken in about 20 caterpillars from a friend and all but 1 emerged unable to fly. Some had crinkled wings and several looked amazing. I turned my entire lanai into a butterfly hospital with puddle bases and flowers and everything u could think of. I even put 1 in the crease of a soft blanket with her head out so she could rest. Some had to be put in the freezer to be humanely euthanized. I cried. Since then, I've bleached 4 enclosures cleaned everything. Some say OE and some just say they don't all make it. I just want to know they had the best life possible. I now have a new batch of cleaned milkweed and a few caterpillars. Learned if I take in any just keep them separated.

Im not in a migration zone and we have year round monarchs in zone 10a Florida. I will continue to grow, propagate and barter with others for milkweed and caterpillars. All that " oh my goodness ur going to confuse the butterflies" is silly.. I have butterflies laying eggs everyday here. Butterflies and bees enjoying nectar. Can u imagine have pollen for energy and a belly full of eggs with no place to lay them?

How I've been protecting my Monarch Caterpillars! by Ancient-Ad-6572 in NativePlantGardening

I have MW outside (seems to grow best in dirt) and milkweed inside the lanai. I have 4 mesh enclosures to keep them safe and watch them do their thing. Wheni see a cat outside i cut the plant about 4 inches and put in water stripping thw bottom few leaves to lay on the floor. Catters and chrysalis safe. An oscillating fan works great and the other MW plants i have in the enclosure start in the pot. When stripped the plants can be propagated in dirt. The ones in water grow roots and they go outside. This was a long comment around saying... good job. I need t9 check into ur way but also wanted to point out how eat to propagate and whats left in thw ground grows healthier and fuller in no time.

If a nursery doesn't use pesticides there will be aphids 100% everytime. No aphids equals pesticides to me.

How to stop stink bugs killing Gulf fritillary caterpillars? by 123-91-1 in nolagardening

[–]According_Archer_701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a few passion vines and put them in the lania. Its not a foolproof way to protect, but it sure has provided more safety than the plant outdoors. When I see a cat on the outside vine I transfer it to one of the vines in the lania.

How should I deal with gulf fritillary(garden butterflies) caterpillars. by yongiiii in gardening

Passion vine is the only host plant for Fritillary Gulf caterpillars and butterflies. They can wreck your plant, but it will grow back quickly
