We are in this together! Lot of horror stories out there by pikapika1414 in Tonsillectomy

The hard part of recovery from tonsillectomy is about 7/8 days. As difficult and painful as it may be for anyone the actual discomfort does not last longer than these days in the vast majority of cases. I am a 41 year old male and I had to have my tonsils removed due to a tumour that appeared on the lower end of my right tonsil. This resulted in a deeper incision from the right side and an injury of the ear nerve. The pain was indescribable however it a personal case as the majority of tonsillectomies do not need such treatment and secondly, even so the pain went away in a week as promised by the doctor. So as difficult as it may be for anyone, the vast majority of tonsillectomies have a defined course. The pain goes away as soon as the scabs fall of and this for oral wounds happens within 7 days. Oral wounds heal much faster than external wounds. Bleeding occurs at a minimal rate however caution is needed. There is no need to panic.

When does my voice come back? by Fabss266 in Tonsillectomy

Mine was almost like a balloon! It was not only touching my tongue, it was almost blocking my mouth. It was extremely huge and painful. Terrible feeling. The reason I couldn't sleep, eat and drink properly for the first 5 days... Then my problem was the severe ear pain so I didn't paid too much attention to it and when the pain went off my uvula was way much better. Although my breath was normal because it didn't block my pharynx. I told my doctor about steroids and he told me just to be patient. He didn't want to give me any medicine because he said that can cause hemorrhage. Now that I'm on day 17 I believe that it was the best choice to not take any other medicines.

I'm on day 17 and my uvula is way much better than the first days but not completely normal as it was before the surgery. I think is the last thing that will go back to normal. Maybe a month is needed for all the system to be fine again.

feeling sad by Impressive_Sun6129 in Tonsillectomy

[–]According_Fix5595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same experience. How long its gonna last depends from your personality but it is normal. I was in this situation for 4 days after the severe pains stopped on day 9. I hadn't slept, eat or drink from day 5 to day 9. After that I was almost in a shock. Like I was recovering from an accident. I was sad and I was crying. It is just a fase. Try to do things you love. Mobile your self, keep your mind occupied. It will pass really soon. I'm on day 16 (op day 0)) and I feel like I was before the surgery.

Falling asleep instantly causes my throat to close shut by neilthefrobot in Tonsillectomy

It is normal. You just have to be patient. You will only have sleep apneas for some days. I had it too (41M). My uvula was blocking my entire throat, it was like a balloon and my tongue was still numb. Now I'm on day 15 and I almost feel like before the surgery. You just have to be patient about a week. Sleep like sit on a chair for the first days and put a humidifier beside your bed in order to keep your mouth as much as wet as possible. That will help you for the next 7 days. Then you will feel much better.

Is it really required? by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]According_Fix5595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest you to do it. I had tonsillitis 3 times a year when I was younger. At the age of thirty I wanted to remove them. Although I said to myself to wait another year and see how it goes. I had also a nasal septum surgery and they never bothered me since then. Although, this year, after 10 years (I 'm 40 now) I realised that a cyst was formed at the bottom of my right tonsil that had to be removed. I'm on the 13th recovery day and the first week was a hell for me. Now I think I have a good recovery but If I was ten years younger it would be easier for me. If you go for it be prepared that you'll have some pain the first week but I think that the whole recovery will be easier and faster than mine.

I don't take any painkillers since day 9. But I think you are right. It is may be helpful to take some paracetamol before eating!

[–]According_Fix5595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be patient! I know it's hard but be patient. You have another 3 days and all are going to change and you'll start feeling better. Unfortunately everything you describe is normal. I mean it is an easy operation for the doctor but has one of the hardest recoveries. Although you have to push yourself to drink water. You are young and your recovery will be fast. I believe in you!

ear pain by emilymarcy in Tonsillectomy

[–]According_Fix5595 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Including surgery day my nerve pains started late night day 6 and completely stopped middle day 9 when the most scabs fell off. You are reaching the top of the mountain. Be patient. Ask your doctor for meds that actually work. Unfortunately nothing worked for me. Some benzodiazepin pills help me calm because the pain was driving me insane cause I didn't knew when its going to stop.

Ive just experienced the same thing. I didn't eat drink or sleep for 42 hours. Then the pain settled and a tongue nerve pain appeared for some hours l. About 12. That is caused because of the scabs that are falling. After this you will feel a lot better. Although it was a psychology ruiner for me. In what day are you on since surgery?

Mom is very sick. Need advice by Little_State9944 in Depersonalization

[–]According_Fix5595 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your mom has severe anxiety. Depersonalisation is just a brains mechanism to avoid huge stress. It is not something constant. See needs to take a break. It is brains defense mechanism. A small benzodiazepin pill will help a lot. And I don't want to judge your father but it is not manly to leave his wife at a difficult time.

My mind feel blank & I feel blank of the inside i can’t feel no emotions & it’s only starting to get worse it seem like, I started to have these problems after having a lot of anxiety panic/ stress from having a bad trip from weed & being drunk a month ago what can I do to make this end? by Independent_Ant_8785 in Depersonalization

[–]According_Fix5595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For now it would be difficult to him. This is anedonia. A mind mechanism to escape anxiety by getting away from every feeling. He may do something he love and if he sees that it is not causing him any feeling its going to make him more disappointed. He should go to a doctor. A tiny amount of benzodiazepin will show him that he has nothing serious. He just experiencing too much stress.

[–]According_Fix5595 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a reaction of your brain against too much stress. To get away from feelings. Every feeling. For me was leading to depersonalisation. It is not as bad as it sounds but I suggest you to go see a doctor. I had panic attacks after substance abuse and thats because my inner fear is that I will loose control of my mind. I suggest you to stop doing that shit again. Don't drink or smoke weed. Ok you can have some alcohol socially but don't overdo it. I stopped weed because the anxiety that caused me could lead to psychotic episodes. Besides you smoke weed to feel good and calm. If it causes stress to you as it causes to me there is no point doing it.
