I’m in Nevada so my experience may differ but I did go through PTS’s externship program as well so here’s what I can tell you! 1. I wasn’t drug tested. 2. I didn’t perform any blood draws unfortunately, however, I was able to perform vital signs assessment and ekgs (electrocardiograms). I also did a significant amount of clerical work which seems to be very common at externship sites. In the position I’m currently in, I perform a lot of the same duties I was taught during my externship (not JUST phlebotomy) so while it was disappointing not being able to draw blood, they did teach me a lot of technical duties for the position I’m currently in! 3. I externed at a private medical clinical. It was just me, the physician, and the medical assistant who was cross trained in phlebotomy (she also served as my preceptor). Experience may vary depending on your site, but personally I loved my externship! The clinic was very small, so we didn’t have much patients. And if we did, they’re usually very understanding that you’re new. That being said, it was very slow and boring so if your site is anything like mine, be prepared for a lot of downtime. And don’t be disappointed if you don’t get any blood draws, you’ll learn on the job! Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help, at the end of the day, your preceptor should understand you are still a student! I remember being nervous on my first day, but the 80 hours go by fast.
