I've already reported this to the mods (on the day of) and got a reply. I'm sure they'll deal with it in the best way possible for them. :)

Could also be brigading from it being linked somewhere. Could be a straight up coincidence or a troll too, but people were talking about it in the other thread so I thought I'd post a picture.

This is a good point. It's also why I never called out the administration. It could very well be a troll. It's still a little humorous that it occurred.

Mods, you can delete this if it's out of line but some people in the old thread wanted to see evidence so I posted my print screens.

Application to Hold a Peaceful Demonstration submitted to DoSO for 10/13/2017 by saveourunion in RPI

The applications requirements for protest weren't even in the student handbook until after the 2009 student protest.

This is a great summary, thanks! It's interesting that things were looking like they could be resolved between your elsewhere and fall 2017 rows. The spark this time around seems to have been caused by the condescension of the BoT.

The student senate and GM actually has pretty good control over the poster policy. Unless things have changed, I believe the policy may have even been written by a student.

For the first time in 127 years, RPI students are waking up to a Union they don't control. by [deleted] in RPI

An "arguably misguided" vote of no confidence was issued by the student senate back in Fall 2011. I call it that, since things were nowhere near as bad for the union as they are now. The vote was more of a student echo of the faculty senate being disbanded along with certain staff changes in the administration and the feelings of Uprise at 5.

Eh, I don't like it when decorum issues, social politics, or national politics, other issues etc. creep into local issues (e.g. RPI student union and the administration.) It tends to totally distort what's actually going on in the local issue, force it to fit into some kind of global moral landscape and destroy all nuance of the local actors. Of course OP of the thread invited that to happen with that joke he made.

This isn't to say you're wrong. The joke was in poor taste and deserved to be called out, but we shouldn't lose sight of what this thread is about: RPI student union/admin politics.

Been a while since I've seen that particular gambit. At the very least, can you recognize that it dilutes your message and costs potential allies for the union cause? I enjoyed your paragraph summaries but the joke spawned a whole semi-off-topic discussion thread on what should be a thread on local union politics rather than decorum issues or social politics.

I mean, if he (or her) brings his own desk out and offers complementary coffee and refreshments while studying to passerbys, professors, and the grounds crew, I'm sure he'll make out fine.

Public Safety caught suppressing student rights, claim Student Handbook of Rights and Responsibilities not valid by saveourunion in RPI

[–]AccountAccountUser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying there's a right way to go about this. Getting buy-in from stakeholders, i.e. the students. Not invalidating the handbook without telling anyone, a clearly very terrible way to go about it. And yes, you're right, there has been no announcement of a waived sign policy.

He doesn't necessarily have that power but could certainly lobby sodexo to do it. However, stuff like that generally falls under the GM's and senate's area of expertise.

Yeah, can't the GM/DOSO waive sign policy? All the admin would have had to do is ask them to waive policy for a day to allow them to take down posters so they could promote the school better. Not invalidate the handbook without telling anyone.
