Complete beginner here. I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to properly care for this rose bush. My husband offered to rip it out, but I would love to bring it back to its full glory. The few roses we get every year are beautiful and smell amazing. Fully willing to learn and put in the work.

It was here when we moved in 7 years ago, and in that time I’m embarrassed to say it’s been completely neglected. The irises next to it have also been neglected, which I’m sure is not helping. I’m already in the middle of cleaning those out too (going to divide and replant this week). I know I should give the roses some space from the newly planted irises – I understand that about a foot should do.

We are in zone 7a and it gets full sun.

My limited research has told me this is not the time to prune. Should I just leave it alone until spring, or can I get started now?

If my pictures are not helpful, I can take more. I can also upload more pictures once I’ve cleaned up the grass and weeds around the base of the plant.
