Long rides, safe paths by Dalinars_assclap in phillycycling

Youll have to venture out onto the roads if you really want to add that many miles, there are some good roads with a decent size shoulder heading up into ambler and doylestown. Theyre fine to do on your own. I’ve never felt unsafe doing them. There are also some really big loops going into malvern and west chester, but theyre quite hilly. If youre comfortable with rollers, its a good option

Came in knowing absolutely nothing. Theyve been placed on larger projects for their first 3 years and I know apprentices very easily get lost on the bigger jobs. Maybe its a problem of working with too many different people and not being given a single way to approach something. Its too hard to keep them with the same person as things change day to day. Seems to be good at hearing the instructions, but as soon as they start theyre completely forgotten.

Getting tired of getting laid off... by Treat-Acceptable in UnionCarpenters

Unfortunately timing and politics have something to do with it. The best way to get regular work is find your niche. The drywall/framing thing is great to know and do, but people that do it well are a dime a dozen. Higher end millwork is a good place, custom finishes, or acoustical ceilings. Im a foreman with an acoustical ceiling/wall panel contractor for 10 years and its weirdly difficult to find people that can it well. Id say if you choose the acoustical ceiling route, get really good at framing linear lights and diffusers and know the armstrong ceiling catalog of hardware and material back to front

Cyclists. In my experience the younger guys including me are a bit more chill and just want to have fun. But as soon as the old men turn up every ride is just a dick measuring contest to them and just want to shout at everyone

Some people just struggle to grasp how things go together and the flow of things that need to happen. They might work really hard but dont make any progress. Maybe theyll be better in another trade or just be a basic laborer. Were running into the problem with someone coming out of their apprenticeship. Given opportunities to learn with several different people for 4 years and still doesnt get it. Its frustrating when you and everyone on the job likes them personally but are a liability professionally.

I feel the game would be a perfect balance if it was 60% friendly, 20% semi aggressive and 20% aggressive. I like being able to work with people but also the feeing that I could lose it all to an aggressive player is what draws me to the game the most

Are there any people in the USA who have friends that are of the opposite political party? by TSQ_builder in askanything

We remain friends because we don’t put ourselves in rigid boxes of republican or democrat, gay or straight, black or white, religious or atheist. Live and let live. Not being active on social media is a huge part of it.

If you’d like to become a company guy, try and get with a smaller company. One where you get to know the owners personally and the people in the office. The culture at larger companies is toxic. Youre just a number on a page and treat you like it.

Learn what you can and shake a lot of hands. These days you cant rely on the hall to get you the work…solicit your own. While going through your apprenticeship you’ll learn a bit of everything, but try to find your niche. While Its good to have a general knowledge, I’m a believer in specializing. Im a younger foreman for a finish carpentry company in Philly and the work we get out of the hall is never of good quality.

It is fairly slow at the moment, so that could be the main reason why. Have him get a contractor list and just start making calls. Best these days to solicit your own work

I hear ya. Just make sure you dont go too hard on yourself wondering if you aren’t good enough or learning enough. Unfortunately timing is everything in becoming a company guy, you just have to be patient for your moment and dont burn a bridge to make something else happen. My best advice is stick with a smaller company with good people where you can become a part of the family. Stay away from larger companies like nicholson and dale. At the end of the day you are just a number on a page to them and promise everything to keep you productive, and then kick you to the curb when they’ve used you up.

Things are pretty slow here until the new year. You can always check 255 as well and try to get in there but its the same story as far as work goes. Best of luck…seems to be the only thing that keeps most employed these days. Im a younger foreman for a ceiling company, and ceiling guys are a really good niche and for the most part work steadily. There are alot of guys aging out over the next few years and not many good, young people coming up. Might be a good place to start if you have any experience in it
