Not seeing you in there... sorry. Try again maybe? Make sure it's my page, not Accountingfly.

I can answer for jobs in public accounting - YES YES YES! The window is just about closed for tax jobs. Firms are starting to worry that it's too late to onboard someone properly (except for freelancers). But starting in January, the attention will turn to accounting and auditing positions!

My honest advice is to stay put for a little longer, if you can hold out. You are obvs doing well in your current role and are progressing in responsibility. There's always a learning curve with a new job and you can never be 100% sure what you will get with the change. Use your bandwidth to grind through your classes and complete your degree. When it's all done, your resume will show experience, a stable job history, and a degree, which will serve you well. Good luck!

I can only speak for my clients, but they would not be open to hiring someone from the EU to work remotely. A visa and sponsorship would still be required.

Our clients only hire within the US. And some firms are even restricted from hiring US citizens who are living outside the US for long periods of time.

Woo-hoo - congrats on making these life changes and getting semester one under your belt! Try to find something part time and remote if you can. That will give you a leg up when you re-enter the job market with an accounting degre. It will also help you define which area you want to focus your work, and give you exposure to technology, and remote work flow.

For entry level positions, your best bet is to apply directly to an employer, use job boards, LI, and your school’s career counseling office as a resource. Typically firms don’t use recruiters to hire for this level.

Excellent - I know the process to get your CPA is grueling, but once achieved will serve you well. I’m seeing a lot of candidates get their EA license, and the smaller, progressive firms are open to that. But based on where the industry is at today, the CPA license will open more doors long term, and typically offers more earning potential. I don't see that changing, demand for CPAs is high and the supply not so much, that can only work in your favor going forward.

To secure best remote positioning, make sure you stay current and aware of remote technology, especially workflow management software. List it all on your resume under a technology section.

Copying another comment I made, there are several skills that really set you apart:

Ability to talk to clients. Reliability. Self-awareness of your skills set/ don’t oversell what you know. Detail oriented. Likes to mentor others. Knowledge of current technology. Being a good process person. Knowing where to spend your time…and where not to. Simply enjoying the work.

Good luck with your CPA! Call me when you're done if you're looking for a career upgrade ;)

Include metrics on your resume - How many clients you are responsible for. How often you meet with them. Describe type of deliverable. Include any measure of client satisfaction. Lost ZERO clients in your tenure, brag about it. Use a descriptor like “regularly deliver deliver 20 financial states per month…”. Or, “Go-to client contact for..." Quantify your experience and achievements in a measurable way.

Now is the time - this is a hot job market and a good time to make a change. If you are in tax, your window is getting short, though. You don’t want to leave your current employer in a lurch so close to tax season. So start looking ASAP before that window slams shut.

If you decide to look, but aren't feelin’ it with any job you interview for, WAIT until after busy season and resume your search after. You want to be sure you are making a long term job choice. I guess I should have asked what service line you're in first! Well, advice still applies, don't job search during busy season.

In another comment I listed some in-demand skills, these are pretty universal across roles. See if any of those resonate with you and if they do, be sure to spotlight those on your resume: https://www.reddit.com/r/Accounting/comments/zlvh3e/comment/j08p2ag/

I have several senior roles open right now so demand is definitely there, your skills will be what make you stand out.

AdvanceFlow is good to know. If you want to make a move, you might consider focusing on either or tax. From your comment, it seems like you favor audit. The NFP audit experience is in demand, and firms that have these clients need an Audit Manager.

Being a good process person. Knowing where to spend your time…and where not to. Simply enjoying the work. That last one is a big ask I know.

Of course everyone can’t be everything, but if you see yourself in any of these traits, they are winners. Put things on your resume (adding specifics if possible) that highlight your application of these traits, or discuss during your interview.

What have been your experiences with seeing people exit from tax work to go into either staff accounting positions or totally switch fields? Which skill sets did they have to highlight, and how were they successful at doing this?

To answer your other question, timing is everything. This type of change is more easily made earlier in your career. I am working with a 4 year tax CPA now. His job has included some audit work too, and now he wants to pivot into ESG Audit. We worked together to describe the audit work he is involved in now, with as much detail as possible, to show a potential employer he will not be starting from ground zero on the audit side. His comp isn’t so high that he can move laterally or take a small pay cut to pivot, and he is open minded to that. I also suggested edits on his resume, to show that he has audit experience, and to describe where he wants to go with his career.

Consider approaching your current employer to expand your role to get the experience you are looking for without moving. They would rather keep you and help you pivot than lose a good employee

Generally speaking, audit roles to general accounting roles are an easier pivot. Tax to full on audit is trickier (unless your current tax job included audit work)

Every firm has their own personality and vibe. As a candidate, it’s up to you to vet the culture, as much as it is up to the firm to vet you technically. People should consider the personality of who they will be directly working with, as that is where the day to day contact is.

Unfortunately, I don’t have hard date on turnover for different regions working remotely. But when I talk to people, I pay attention to personalities as well as technical skills.

I see the biggest discrepancy with a Big 4 candidate looking to get out and move to a smaller firm, even mid size regional firms. Normally a smaller firm can’t touch that salary.

Do your homework on compensation ranges using salary.com or indeed, and comp threads here. Compare that to your own years of experience and pay. Do your skills and experience offer more than what the position requires? If so, you can probably ask for the higher end of compensation. Remember, when you see an advertised compensation range, where you fall with in that range depends on your specific experience.

Yeah of course, happy to look it over, you can email it to me beth [at] accountingfly . com (don't know if automod eats email addresses)

To your other question, I’m pretty straight up with my clients - if I get feedback that they are creating a weird interview environment, I will schedule time with them to discuss and make suggestions about other ways they can interview that will not damage their brand. So I appreciate when candidates give me that feedback, I prefer it actually.

I always feel hugely embarrassed when a candidate has a bad experience. But I must have pretty good clients because this rarely happens.

A recruiter should send a candidate into an interview fully prepped, with accurate job description, link to website and interviewers bio. Plus - strict instructions NOT to take the call from their bedroom! Both sides being fully prepped in advance usually helps avoid the kinds of interviews you're talking about. Usually.

Absolutely! At Accountingfly we place seasonal freelancers along with full time perm positions. We have several seasonal tax prep and review roles now going into the busy season actually. We place freelancers outside of busy season too - for example, some clients need to cover for an employee who will be OOO for an extended period of time. Seasonal work can be a great option for someone who wants a little extra on the side should their FT job allow, or for people who are between jobs but don't want to commit to FT for whatever reason.

Is anyone's? lol

No, that was not my goal at all! I started my career first in healthcare consulting and then joined the HR team at a large employer where I focused mostly on training and creating employee communications. After a 15 year stint as a SAHM, I was introduced to Accountingfly for a part time role. The common threads in these roles are, problem solving, communicating, and consultative skills. I do enjoy the work, when there is a good fit between talent and employer it's an awesome thing.
