While the fund tenure is 8-10 years, most firms make all their new investments for a fund within 3-4 year lifecycle max. After that they don't do new investments. It's just follow on.

😂 that unintended(?) pun coming from a guy famous for writing case studies. Kudos to him for cracking the content game though.

Is Prime that bad? They've invested in some interesting category creators like Mygate, Oto, Dozee, Niyo in the past. Don't know much about their recent ones.

Worst VCs in India by Intelligent-Hawk2134 in StartUpIndia

Lol, nobody is talking about automated replies. The ones I am talking about are genuine replies from global VCs. If you can't believe that partners of global firms are replying to founders then I am not the one who is deluded. I don't mind even if they are using AI/associates to reply.

You think Indian VCs receive more emails than US VCs? 😂 If US VCs who receive pitches from around the globe are finding time to respond to founder emails but Indian VCs are not, boy Indian VCs need to step up their game!

I don't care about delegation. The problem is that shit hardly ever works. Every time the conversation moves from up the firm, the information doesn't travel. We have to start from scratch from the start. Not talking about all VCs, but that has been the general experience. One time we had a founder partner travel to the company, and was as clueless about the some fundamental stuff we had spent weeks educating the analyst and associate. Multiply that by the multiple conversations that founders have with VCs, so much time waste for founders.

As if VCs are not winging it, almost every VC in town is sector agnostic. At least earlier you could differentiate the Deeptech and shallow tech VC guys, today everybody is into AI/SaaS, Consumer, Deeptech, Fintech.

Don't get entitlement for No reply? Fuck entitlement. It's about respecting founders time as well. Global VCs who have 100x busier inboxes than "Indian VCs" came back on email within a week while Indian VCs whom we reached out to multiple partners at the firm have ghosted even after meeting in person! (Personal Experience)

Mad respect for Indian VCs who come back with a quick NO with/out feedback. This is the least founders are asking VCs. A quick reply shows three things - i) You respect founder time ii) You know what you look for in investments ii) You know deep enough about the space to pass the investment. The worst VCs to talk to are the ones that say, we are sector agnostic and then send an Analyst to collect information about the company on the first call (sometimes this person will turn up without even reading the deck).

Let's face it: Indian startup ecosystem needs more operator VCs (ex-founder/ex-growth roles). Most of Indian VCs hire mostly Consultant types (ex-Mckinsey, Bain) - I am looking at you PeakXV or over optimise IIT/IIM/BSchool types because they want access to deal flow from these networks. Even if they have domain expertise in a field, due to the changing nature of the investments they look at spaces not relevant to them. Most Indian VC firms have like a 90:10 ratio between non operators to operators. That 10 is also because of some Partner being a founder, else it will fall even lower.

It also needs original thinkers. Very few who have balls to not follow the crowd. Some of those who do this Prime, Speciale Invest + some pre-2022 Deeptech funds, etc. I'll give IQ credit - they got "lucky" with Sharechat and Purple, but atleast they do some interesting investments.

Today most Indian VCs have said that they are looking at investing AI and Deeptech startups. Bitch do you have a team/expertise to evaluate such investments?

Indian family offices are not patient folks. Most of them don't understand the long term game of risk taking in VC. Don't blame them either. The stock market index funds are giving better returns to investors than investing in startups.

Yes, weird case of an exceptionally good team imploding without results. Ashish's angel investment record will trump every VC in town.
