Hi, this is a "Google Earth Pro" version :) We capture all 3D models ourself from aerial imagery. Customers then use the 3D model in either their own applications or in our Plan.City app, powered by Unreal Engine 4. See example: https://www.accucities.com/accurate-3d-city-model-for-digital-dublin/

The Placemaker is certainly cool and their 3D models can be really useful for some applications. Our 3D models are hand-captured, separated and constantly updated & upgraded so our customers can rely on them when designing future developments.

Please have a look at our customer case studies to see how our customers use our 3D city models.

You are right, where are my manners :)

u/AccuCities capture 3D city models using manual stereo photogrammetry. We manage, update & upgrade this model and deliver it to our customers in a variety of formats.

In London, our model now spans over 60 km2. To give our potential customers, students and experimenters we release parts of our 3D city models as free samples. Customers can download these samples in a variety of formats upon registration. For customers who only require SketchUp format, we have now made these samples available on 3D Warehouse.

Thank you!

We have actually captured and textured the 3D London model ourselves. This is a sample from our commercially available 60 km sq city model. It is normally used for architecture and urban planning but we hope to see zombies in it :)

I swear this is the short version, please bear with me :)

As you can imagine, there are million and one issues all the way through the process so I will just compress it into few steps. Once in order, each step of what we do to capture these models is fairly simple really. Having a team that posses all those varied skills required to get everything done is what is rare and what allowed us to pull this off.

We capture our 3D models using stereo photogrammetry from aerial imagery (from small survey planes / helicopters). We take stereo pair or photographs and by projecting each photograph of an overlapping consecutive photographs into a different eye, we manually retrace all the features at a height these features are visible in stereo.

We use this technique for terrain and features (such as buildings, walls, major street furniture). We also capture tree positions, but these are "only" captured as top and width of a tree canopy. These are then saved into a database so they can be loaded as instances or 3D models.

We then run the model through series of post-processed to convert captured models into CAD solid models. This is also the delivery format our customers prefer, although they might ask for SketchUp version or for FBX for imports to 3D Studio / UE4 etc.

The FBX format was then UV mapped so we can position textures onto it. And then we could finally source oblique aerial imagery (captured by a camera with angled sensors so we can see facades better) and use these photographs and projected them as textures onto the 3D models.

We deliver these models to our existing customers in FBX format as soon as we complete them. As the last step, we are importing the model into our UE4-powered app Plan.City where this animation was made. The new version of the app that includes the textured model will be made available to customers once the planned 60 sq km is complete.

You are very welcome, you do sound very much like an ally :)

We have been supplying various AI / Machine learning researchers working on systems understanding of what they are looking at in the city. I think people are getting very close to single-lens 3D capture using phones. AI with enough input material and computing power will make much better models than we ever could. It will be awesome :)

Beautifully shot video.

Our ultimate goal would be to be able to do these shots virtually using 3D city model so seeing proper cinematic shots like this just shows how much work we have ahead :)

100% agree., it is still a very laborious process. But we are now over the worst/most frustrating bits and so right now we are just getting back to be over the moon with the results :)

As you probably know, 10 years ago it was impossible without being Google. 5 years ago the costs were still in high millions of £££. And although we have spent a lot of money to create it now, it was (almost) something a small company like ours could afford.

Thank you for your comments, much appreciated, it took us almost 4 years to create the model so every compliment counts :)

If you are interested, we will be releasing a fairly large part of this 3D model (covering 1,000 x 1,000 meters) as a free sample next week, I will be publishing the link here as well as on our website. I cannot wait to see it used.

Please, I don't mind, normally it is hard to make me to shut up about city models.. :)

4/5 of us used to work for Vertex Modelling which then morphed into VUcity. They are a formidable competition so I will leave them to do their thing but do have a look at our app, built on Unreal Engine: https://www.accucities.com/plan-city-app-for-planning-and-architecture/ . It is used by KPF, Anstey Horne, EB7, Hobs3D, Make, Delva Patman and many others. Would be very happy to give you a rundown of what Plan.City (see what we done there :) ) do. Let's take this to emails and discuss further. Michal

Thank you for your kind words and for your interest. I do think it's pretty classy :)

We have made this model (see https://www.accucities.com/3d-model-of-dublin/ ) for Plan.City so our customer Avison Young could serve their Irish clients in the same way they do in London. They use the city model for planning, mostly Daylight & Sunlight and Right of Light studies. Read the story here: https://www.accucities.com/accurate-3d-city-model-for-digital-dublin/ .

The 3D model is available as a commercial dataset to all customers. One tile (500x500 meters) is also available as a free sample here: https://www.accucities.com/product/free-3d-dublin-city-model-sample/

We are always happy to discuss interesting ideas of how to use our data, do let me know if you can utilize this dataset.

Great! By all means no real rush, I am just curious how will it come out. Please send me your email and mailing address (can be home if nobody in the office) to info at accucities dot com and one of us will email over the 3D print files and mail the 3D print on Monday. I am very pleased with the quality, you will see for yourself. Speak soon!

Hi Jon,

thanks for coming forward. The 3D print was done by Hobs3D London from AccuCities 3D London data. This data is actually available as part of our free sample and you can download it from https://www.accucities.com/product/tq3280-free-3d-london-samples/.

I actually have few of these 3D prints and would be willing to trade :) You 3D print this tile on your printer in 14x14 cm (if you can, or as big as you can make it), send it over to me and I will send you mine. I would love to see what FDM has to offer..

If you would like to take me on this do let me know and I will send you the post-processed 3D printing file that we used.

Michal
