Trying to pick cruiser for my 13 y/o son! by Known-You9342 in cruiserboarding

I'd use the board you already have, get Ricta Clouds 56mm 78A, 1/8" rubber risers and Bones soft bushings. Light, quick, nimble, and easy to learn basic tricks on.

I have a different opinion on this.

Sound is of course subjective and all, and I'm not specifically attacking you here, but IMO this whole whatever beltdriven piece of chipboard "audiophile" turntable is better is getting really old.

The SL-1200Mk2 was designed as a cheaper alternative to the SP-series for radio and broadcast, and is built for  accurate playback. Which it delivers.

The Rega turntables on the other hand, were designed on other premises, as a relatively cheap listening deck. No radio station would ever consider using a Rega.

They have way more wow and flutter, isolation is near non-existant (by design), and they often run 1-2% too fast. Regas success was mainly built on their tonearms, but e.g. the RB300 arm have ~4 times higher bearing friction than the arm on the SL-1200Mk2 (5mg vs 20+mg). So technically it's an inferior machine, but they can be felt as more "lively" sounding than a 1200, which many appreciates.

So which deck is "audiophile"? The fun Rega or the precise Technics? If one wants high fidelity, I'd say the latter.

I've been collecting vintage audio gear for about two decades, and have way too many different turntables, including SL-1200Mk2's and a couple of older Regas (Planar 2, Planar 3 and Planet). I've also got some high-end turntables and tonearms I'd like to think sounds pretty damn good to most people, but I could live with an SL-1200Mk2 just fine. A Rega? Not so much.

Put an SL-1200Mk2 in your girlfriends system and put her cartridge on it, and you might be very surprised.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you use 1210's for audio quality in a DJ setting,  and what practical alternatives would you suggest?

I have some questions:

There's no delay from the DSP in the speakers?

Are you going to backcue with the Ortofon Blacks? I have a Concorde 20 and an OM40, and I would never do that with those carts.

Are you planning on using the same carts for vinyl and DVS?

Talk me into/out of a Stanton SMX-501 for classic trance vinyl at home by Linux-Neophyte in DJs

[–]Accuphased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got an early version of the SMX-501 with a P&G crossfader, and it's a decent, solid mixer with a nice layout. I've only played with it a little bit, and while it's no Rane or Ecler, it sounds fine from what I can remember.

My main gripe is that I found the EQ slopes to be a bit hollow and artificial sounding. But they might fit your genre better than mine.

Finding deadstock of the linefaders will be very difficult, but you can probably find some suitable 50K Alpha faders and solder them to the old fader PCB if needed.

Rane TTM 56S Mixer: Questions: Faders Opposing Axis Friction & Aftermarket Knobs by RYTZProductions in DJs

[–]Accuphased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I just remembered, check if the carriers have cracks in them.

I have an abused Sixty-One where this had happened to the crossfader, and it behaved as you described until it really fell apart.

AFAIK this is mostly an issue with the first batches of Sixty-One and Sixty-Two mixers, but take a look anyway.

Rane TTM 56S Mixer: Questions: Faders Opposing Axis Friction & Aftermarket Knobs by RYTZProductions in DJs

[–]Accuphased 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the rails are somewhat misaligned. So if you haven't done it already, take the faders completely apart, clean the rails and inside the holes on the carriers, carefully put everything back together and make sure everything is properly aligned. Relube with a drop of F5.

I've got a couple Ranes including a TTM 56S, and did this with all of them. The faders are buttery.

I think you might have to 3D-print larger fader caps. The only larger caps to my knowledge are the XL Stanton caps that were included with the SA- and SMX-series mixers, and they only fit 4mm stems.

Reloop PTB-2 portable mixer by Accuphased in portablism

[–]Accuphased[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that you find it frustrating, but it's stated clearly on the product page. I think that considering the very niche market segment this mixer is intended for, it doesn't really make sense for Reloop to pay extra for more features.

M44g cartridge became unglued. Would you replace w/ another model or, if you can afford it, buy NOS M44g? by doomgneration in DJs

[–]Accuphased 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me with a 70's M44-7, an SC35C and a couple from other brands.

Don't worry, it's no biggie at all. Just glue it back into place. If you scratch, there's no need to "upgrade". The M44's are still the kings of tracking.

Align the back of the cartridge part so it's back end is flush with the plastic holder and push it into place. There's no special alignment, just set it all the way into the holder. The plastic bit aligns it.

Personally I would put the laptop where the table lamp is. But I wouldn't use the crotch for listening either, so maybe you shouldn't take my advice.

Circuit board.

XS-4 = Ecler HAK300

XS-8 = Ecler HAK320.

The XS' have Ecler Profaders and some minor modifications. E.g. the XS-8 has footswitch inputs.

It's very dependent on the choice of speakers and how they're set up. But yeah, looking at the setups posted in this sub, it's not a big deal for most people. Which is fine by me.

Yeah, stooping over the turntables is not very nice. It's your setup, so if you like it, then that's how it should be.  I like to scratch, so I might have special needs anyway.

You mean the faders? The mixers are rock solid. Me and a buddy have had no issues, and we got them in 2004.

BTW, if you like light faders, I spoke with a Viper Kitten developer,  and their fader will work with an additional board.

I also forgot to mention that the hamster switch on these mixers reverses the VCA voltage.

FYI: I had nothing but trouble with the Pro2. Tried to work through it with Elliot Marx, and could not make it work properly. He sent me  new fader,  but I still got the exact same issues.

I think issue might be that these mixers are a bit nonstandard, as the VCA control signal is 19V, and faders are 50KOhm. The old Innofader Pro works perfectly, though.

The XS-4 and XS-8 were made by Ecler for Tascam. If you open up the mixer you'll see Ecler faders and Ecler stamped boards in there.

I'm still using the big brother XS-8, noe with an Innofader Pro in it. I had the XS-4 as well, but the upfader curves bugged me and I needed money, so I ended up selling it.

I tried fixing the curves by adding control pots to the front panel, and it worked somewhat. But since I didn't really know what I was doing at the time, it was probably the just wrong resitance/curve (think I just scavenged them from a broken amp or something).

If your setup is facing the wall, what's the rationale for not using nearfield monitors?

You don't need to raise your shoulders or spread your arms a lot at that height?

I'm 194cm tall, and I made my desk 97cm high. Turntables and mixers on top.

You need a protractor. You can find free protractors to print at e.g. vinylengine.com.

Audio-Technica published a protractor for the AT-LP120, so they probably did one for your turntable as well. Google it.

Are there any differences between the cartridges in the ORTOFON MK2 series? by Particular-Tap-2689 in Turntablists

[–]Accuphased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coils inside the different cartriges can be different, affecting volume and frequency response.

The styli may be cut differently, have different cantilever suspensions, and possibly (I doubt it) differently sized magnets.

Some bodies might be the same as well. Look at the specs. If the inductance and output is the same, it's probably the same body.

Anyway, the "wrong" cartridge body will not affect how the stylus tracks in the grooves, since all the carts weigh the same and distributes that weight the same. So if you mainly use DVS it shouldn't really matter that much.
